God of War

I don't pay attention to Nintendo games anymore, the last few I had played (years ago) were pretty average but all rated well, Nintendo gets a huge nostalgia boost from reviewers IMO.

To be fair, Sony kind of gets a similar boost. Not that it's the case here.

Wait, wait....wait. Skill Up's review is a little shy of 20mins. That's surprising since he's known to make highly detailed vids of over double that length. I'm serious, I get snacks ready when I'm about to watch a Skill Up review. I didn't watch the review because the people over here at work expect me to actually work, so unreasonable. But I'll be checking this out as soon as I get home.

Its funny how major gaming sites hold so little sway these days with me when it comes to reviews. There are so many great youtube content creators and I find their reviews to be more informative than those from say IGN or Gamespot.

Can't believe the reviews this game is getting!

I'll be buying this the second I play through GOW III remsatered.

So, I don't feel like playing the older games, but interested in this one. I don't think there's any background I need to know to play this rght? I'm sure I can watch some videos. I have a general knowledge of the story and character.

Just watch a cinematic compilation.

I don't think so but only because most of Sony's big games that we get now are from the PS3 era, other than GT and God of War most of their other titles started with PS3. Nintendo has been doing Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash Bros etc for decades now and I think the nostalgia factor creeps into reviewers when they see those characters from their youth. I'm not saying they make crappy games but I do think sometimes they get a pass when it comes to things that both Sony and MS would be dinged for in reviews.

I have only played God of War 3, and I didn't feel like I missed anything. I finished the game and thoroughly enjoyed it. Pretty sure you are good to go with this game without having to play the others.

IMO

Or they might actually be good games...:meh:

On topic I can see this being GOTY.

It will probably be Rockstar vs Sony for many. Just like 2013.

That is the same type of logic Xbox fanboys use to downplay the acclaim Sony gets.

Nintendo is just that good and always have been

94. Hell yeah.

My cousin still has my regular PS4. I might let him keep it and just pick up the PS4 Pro GOW bundle. The console looks sleek.

The reviews for this game so far are insane!
Was just posting over at Resetera and they even changed the logo to an axe.

IMO, not a fan of the GoW Pro bundle. But you really can't go wrong with a PS Pro. You will love it.

I only have a pro but these guys prefer the OG version atm. Hopefully, it gets ironed out.

Dude, Gamingbolt. They are NOT good for these videos. They have screwed up so bad in the past. They are like VGChartz. Just wait for the Digital Foundry one.

Agree on the quality of Gaming Bolt. They seem very click-baitey to me. I did hear the Pro version has some framerate issues on the best visuals setting. An occasional framerate dip doesn't bother me, so I'd go for the best visuals. No way I'd play on base PS4; that sounds silly.

I was going to wait on this game -- never been a big God of War fan -- but the reviews are stellar, so I may pick up a copy on release, or at least when I finish Far Cry 5.

The challenge now is not letting my expectations get too high, so that I end up disappointed that the game isn't some perfect masterpiece.

Gamepur, picking up on a Resetera thread:

"ResetEra user MattAces has built a thread on the popular forums summing up all the information about this topic coming from the several outlets that have had a chance to play the game before it ships on April 20.

"Looking at this intel, it looks like that many – especially Polygon – think the game is best played on PS4 Pro's Performance Mode rather than 4K, as the latter has frame rate drop which might be annoying for an action game.

"In God of War's case, the increased resolution isn't worth the frame rate trade-off. We tried the 4K mode during our review period, and found that the game sometimes failed to maintain its 30 fps target", Polygon claims.

"The drops happened often enough — both in combat and in merely exploring the world — to make us want to switch to Performance mode. The frame rate was more variable there; it didn't stay locked at 60 fps, which would be a lot to ask. Yet the game almost always ran well above 30 fps on this setting, and we preferred the increased responsiveness, especially in battle."

So, to sum things up:

  • PS4 Pro Performance: Unlocked target 60fps (near constant according to PSLS)
  • PS4 Pro Resolution 4k: 30fps (with drops)
  • PS4 Pro Resolution 1080p: 30fps (with drops?)
  • PS4 Base: 30fps, no options

Quote from the OP of that thread:

"So after getting a bunch of mixed info, here's some final confirmation from Polygon. Scratch that, every single impression/reviews so far are providing very mixed info, again.

"Please for the love of god, don't freak out over anything yet until DF analyze it."

Hmm. I think I'd start with 4K mode, then downshift if the framerate dips bother me.
