Mad Max (Sept. 1)

I'm about halfway through the game now, perhaps a little less.

My enjoyment of the game is not decreasing one bit. On the contrary, it's getting more and more entertaining as I unlock new combat moves and beef up my ride.

While it's unmistakable that it's a wasteland, each new area feels different and has a lot of variation that make you feel like you're somewhere else, so it doesn't all look same-y.

I know a lot of critics say the game gets repetitive fast, but I honestly don't know what the hell they're talking about. I've played a metric ton of open-world games and while there is certainly repetition in ALL OF THEM, at least in Mad Max I'm always having a good time and the difficulty seems to be keeping up with my upgrades quite well.

Getting more and more scrap has become an obsession! I love that you can do projects in the strongholds to unlock stuff like scrap while you're offline, refill your ammo and even an automatic scrap collector when you destroy vehicles so you don't always have to get out and pick it all up.

Brilliant game. I cannot fathom how it's sitting at a 70 average right now. It just doesn't make sense. The hand-to-hand combat, the vehicle combat, the excellent graphics, even just the sound of the cars... It's all top quality, and I KNEW it would be coming from Avalanche.

Yeah, shocked at the reviews, just can't even begin to understand what's happening there. Makes no sense.

I've been learning the past year though that it's way better to rely on videos and user reviews/impressions.

I couldn't agree more, this is like the original Batman AA for me, it has that quality feel, and its just really, really fun the more I play. For whatever reason the ps4 version scored lower, its almost exactly the same, but the xb1 ver is sitting at 77, still really low in my opinion, but closer to what I think it deserves.

Look at this review. What is he talking about the car handling is bad, does he not understand the game takes place off the asphalt 95% of the time? That's one of the best parts about it for me, it feels like an off road destruction derby in a huge world.

Even if you can forgive the way the slightest bump sending you careening off-course, there will be frequent situations your stack of spikes and wheels will just go sideways for no apparent reason. Race activities, scientifically proven to be the worst side missions in the whole of open-world games, can be next to impossible under Max's unwieldy helming. And while you can supposedly upgrade the base vehicle's traction, I never felt a worthwhile difference from the tech tree's mid-tier enhancements.

WTF? I really don't understand what he saying. I've never had any issues with "going sideways for no apparent reason."

yes you cannot yank the wheel and nitro in sand without losing control, we're sorry it doesn't drive for you. Use common sense, even then the game is pretty forgiving. Btw, those "race activities" he mentions, I won my first two attempts and I thought I did horrible.

Yep. I feel like a lot of these reviewers popped in the game for a few hours, reviewed it without really understanding it and playing it properly and promptly went back to MGS:V.

I'm starting to lose hope in game journalism. Same thing happened with Dying Light, which is one of my favourite titles of the year.

Meanwhile, I thought Witcher 3 was not that great of a game (gameplay wise). I didn't even finish it, yet all the critics love it. I know a lot of players did too, and likely most of this community but I actually traded it in towards Mad Max and I've now played (and enjoyed) MM way more than W3 so far.

Thinking of doing the same thing with my copy of the Witcher 3. Good game but not really into it, not unlike the others I've bought and returned. Will I ever learn? lol

Does anyone else play in first person more than third? So much more immersive and visceral smashing into cars etc. I also enjoy when someone leaps onto the hood of your car in fps and shotgun them off lol

Sounds awesome, I'll have to give it a try. I've barely used it so far.

This is a serious contender for GOTY for me. It's got a lot of competition coming in the next few months, but this game will definitely be on the short list.

Agreed, yet I had no idea I would enjoy it this much. The previews and vids just didn't do much for me.

Mw hasn't posted praise in a few hours. Anyone else a little worried?

I enjoy using the "bullet time" aiming as an strategic awareness, oh and btw, I've switched to 1st person only in car combat now, much harder but I love the challenge.

Got the game on PC.
Averaging over 180 fps @ 1o80p and 80fps @ 4k.

Hell of an optimization job and kudos to Avalanche.
Game is also really fun. Enjoying it.

What are your specs?

Gigabyte MOBO

Having played MGS for a couple days before i got this from gamefly, I was initially kind of annoyed with it. In general the game is slower and more sluggish feeling (that part i still don't really like) but after a few hours and a couple upgrades things got better. I'm quite a ways in now, and enjoy the game, but theres not quite enough to the melee combat for me so I'm still feeling like renting this and buying MGS was the right call for me. Fun game though and I'm glad it grew on me, I just kinda wish it was a little more responsive, and I have had some pretty severe frame dips...(on xbone)

Do you have a text file saved for when you need to say that or do you just know what everything is all the time?

I picked this up on sale for X1. At first I didn't like the car handling but after a few upgrades its much better. The graphics are excellent and really pull you into the Mad Max wasteland. Melee combat is simple but fun with a nice heavy/crunchy feel to it. And there are some cool characters in this game world. I have to say I'm really enjoying this game.

it was the opposite for me, it got worse and worse with every repetitive task

but for the amount of time i played it it was awesome, amazing atmosphere

Every open world game has repetitive tasks, every game does for that matter. But do those tasks remain fun, I think that's the question gamers should be asking themselves. For you it became tedious and probably got boring. Nothing wrong with that it happens. But for me the deeper I get into this game the more fun I've been having.

There are a handful of objectives that don't change much but as I upgrade both Max and his ride those objectives remain fun. I love the quest to become the ultimate road warrior in this game. I wish the controls while on-foot where a little tighter but I'm having a lot of fun with this game.
