"We don't have any plans specific to Xbox consoles in virtual reality or mixed reality," Microsoft Chief Marketing Officer Mike Nichols told the website at the E3 video game convention in Los Angeles last week. "Our perspective on it has been and continues to be that the PC is probably the best platform for more immersive VR and MR."

That's a stark difference from what Xbox chief Phil Spencer originally promised when he introduced the company's Xbox One X console, originally known as Project Scorpio, in June 2016. "This is hardware built specifically to lead the console industry into true 4K gaming and high-fidelity VR," he said at the time, adding the hardware would enable "premiere VR experiences without sacrificing performance."

One year later, Xbox chief Phil Spencer told CNET again that the Xbox One X would still fully support virtual reality, even after the Wall Street Journal reported that it wouldn't.

Maybe next gen as it feels this was the last E3 for them to announce it

Hope they bring it next gen then. I suppose they should concentrate on first party for now but I really want VR for Xbox.

I think VR is in a place where it is neat tech, but not to where console makers have to include it. If they want to, great, if not, also great.

They didn't want to pull another Kinect. They are all about GAMES GAMES GAMES now.

i am glad about this. I have the PSVR and while it is "neat," it isn't engaging enough. Resolution is low and just not as polished as it needs to be for most gamers. I had a feeling MS's would be much the same if it came out in this time frame.

Oculus rift support would have worked. Gives them more possible buyers and MS can support it without all the costs

Microsoft says it’s no longer planning VR support on Xbox

Microsoft has completely pulled back on plans to support virtual reality headsets on the Xbox. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer of gaming Mike Nichols said that “we don’t have any plans specific to Xbox consoles in virtual reality or mixed reality.” Nichols goes on to say that the PC is “probably the best platform” for virtual and mixed reality, and that for the Xbox, “our focus is primarily on experiences you would play on your TV.”
This basically completes the slow decay of Microsoft’s console VR plans, at least for now. In 2016, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said that the upcoming Project Scorpio console would support “high-end VR” like that available on Windows PCs. Since Microsoft had previously partnered with Oculus to support Xbox controllers on the Oculus Rift, there was widespread speculation that Scorpio might work with the Rift as well.
This never happened, but later that year, Microsoft announced an entire line of VR headsets — and a few months after that, it said that mixed reality content would be coming to Xbox devices in 2018. However, at last year’s E3, Spencer was substantially less enthusiastic. He told Road to VR that although he was “long-term bullish” on VR, it wasn’t ready to come to Xbox yet, and the market was “years away.” Now, Nichols is barely even expressing interest in the platform.
Spencer described an “over-exuberance” in Microsoft’s early VR plans, and the market has definitely grown more slowly than many imagined. However, Microsoft’s competitor Sony has done reasonably well with its PlayStation VR headset, and Microsoft has gone forward with several PC VR headsetsalongside partners like Samsung and Acer. Microsoft is still trying to shore up the Xbox One’s shaky position, though, in part because it overemphasized selling the Kinect motion controller early on. It’s not surprising to see the company’s Xbox VR plans slip away — especially since it’s largely focusing on business uses for its mixed reality headsets.

And maybe that is the answer? They didn't come out and say they wouldn't add support for 3rd party devices did they? Isn't this announcement just MS saying that THEY aren't investing in VR? I might be reading too far into this, but perhaps they are leaving the door open through carefully worded press to get support for OCULUS or HTC

Their focus should were be on putting first-party in a position to succeed right now, so its good to hear their messaging isn't all over the place.

No qualms with that decision. If anything I'd say let third parties (Oculus, etc) have at it if they'd like a console VR presence.

No worries. It will be go time with Oculus or whatever they use for VR on the next Xbox.

I wanna know what’s the biggest factor with VR, is it the unit or the console/pc or a lil bit of both?

Doesn’t the PSVR use a one single screen instead of individual ones for each eye and get a lil “FX Chip” like boost from it?

They probably couldn't do it right on the S. And $500 for an X plus whatever a HMD would cost would be too expensive to be successful.

Apologies... I did not catch it

Can a mod close/lock this thread then?

I checked, I didn't see any threads by Val on this. I did see one by Rollins earlier, but I already folded that in. So no worries.

Yep, they need to finish getting their first party going full speed before they start coming up with ways to split development resources.

I'm kind of disappointed Xbox isn't entering the arena. It would've helped push VR forward by expanding the user base, increasing competition, pushing the tech forward, and drawing in more developers. Now VR's progress will be slowed. PS5 will have to carry it forward alone, at least in the console space. We needed MS to join in. That would have helped. Even Sony has said this.

I tried PSVR. I found it surprisingly immersive, like you're in the game rather than watching it on a screen 7 feet away. However, in the end, I didn't stick with it, for a number of reasons (wires, headset hassle, narrow game library, Move controllers). I'm curious what PS5 will offer, though.

My guess is because this gen May be nearing an end, which makes me a sad panda :(

I'm interpreting the OP statement to mean MS isn't entering the VR arena NEXT generation.

If all they're saying is that they aren't entering VR this generation, well, who cares. I mean, did anyone expect them to, at this point? As you say, the gen is almost over anyhow.
