Microsoft Says “No VR or AR For You Xbox Mawahahaha!”?

He put informative on my post BEFORE making this thread and then said he didn't catch it LOL.

"Just on the consumer game side of VR, what we've noticed is there was a lot of [venture capital] funding for games, but a lot of those games have shipped in the last 12 months," said Simon Carless, executive vice president at UBM and one of GDC's organizers, in a recent interview.

"I just don't think the install base in most cases has been quite there for them to make their investments back, unfortunately. People will continue to work in VR, I just think it will potentially be more indie studios, or maybe more things funded by hardware companies who want examples of the games to showcase."

There's a bunch more stuff from the GDC in that link. 29% of developers believe that VR isn't a sustainable development platform.

Only 17 percent expect to see a significant increase in headset ownership over the next two years.
It's the same cost issue would-be VR adopters face now. Close to half of the developers surveyed — 41 percent — think mobile platforms will be the dominant ones for "immersive reality" experiences in five years.
Not only that, but VR demographics were missed by a fair margin. The areas with the highest adoption rate didn't have many games tailored to them.

None of this is new or surprising. On the 2017 survey, one respondent wrote: "At the moment, the hardware is still too expensive. Software is only coming because of first-party funding; once that dries up, I am concerned that there won't be a large enough install base."
That's the bit that I'm finding curious now. There was this massive push for it, but I rarely hear a blip about VR now. It's like all the games that were planned for it were forced out at once, and now the games either aren't comming, or they aren't getting coverage?

I'm sure that will change when the new PSVR comes out though.

I'm interpreting the OP statement to mean MS isn't entering the VR arena NEXT generation.

If all they're saying is that they aren't entering VR this generation, well, who cares. I mean, did anyone expect them to, at this point? As you say, the gen is almost over anyhow.
I read it that way too. Or at least putting it on the back-burner for awhile.

Toms Hardware has a pretty good article about the state of VR too.
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/vr-ar-quarterly-sales-down,37335.html

International Data Corporation (IDC) this week released its Worldwide Quarterly Augmented and Virtual Reality Headset Tracker, and the results paint a grim picture of the current state of the market. But don't fret--the report also points to a booming future.
According to IDC’s research, first quarter shipments of AR and VR headsets plunged by as much as 30.5% year-over-year between 2017 and 2018. The company estimates that a mere 1.2 million AR and VR headsets shipped in Q1 18, which is a paltry number for a market with more than a dozen headsets to choose from.

They then go on to say that there was heaps of free crap given out which could have bloated last year's figures.

Anyway, I think it's a super neat feature to have. Will I spend $300 or whatever on one? Hell no.

I really wouldn't get enough use out of it, and until the games I like are catering to it as a feature, I won't be interested at all.

I love the idea of AssCreed offering VR tours of the Pyramids, and VR would make storming the beaches of Normandy for 500th time actually seem like an attractive idea. What it could do to the first person shooter genre alone is potentially amazing.

But I hate the idea of teleporting to move. I hate the idea of sacrificing a cinematic experience. But I'm still super hopeful for when the experiences are finally fully realised.

The tech isn't there? That's relative, next gen won't be as good as the gen after that and so on. The fact is, a lot of game engines aren't there yet, they're just ports to VR. You won't see wireless VR that's responsive and hi-resolution in the next generation. You'll be waiting two more generations on console.

The tech not "being there" is also a matter of opinion. Every single game I played in VR is locked 60fps/90fps or 120fps even and I have depth perception and a life-sized gameworld, things you don't get on a flat TV(a few games are 60fps locked, but very rare). I'll trade off resolution for those things all day long, Resident Evil 7 and Skyrim are great examples. If you played Skyrim on console, you didn't play it at 60fps and you likely never will.

On PSVR reddit, we're in love it with now, and most will tell you its better than both the PS4 and Xbox in terms of games. Tons of people with that opinion actually.
The only thing that isn't there tech wise is the controllers, but most games you can use the DS4. If you think all the games have low resolution, try Wipeout VR on Pro, its f***ing amazing and dozens of hours of gameplay. Also, Astrobot in PSVR is razor sharp and it's getting a full game this year. Superhot is probably better by itself than any game I've played on either current gen console.

Like harder games, fps with good resolution? This s*** is like Dark Souls but in fps

See the above is a game you've likely never heard of and based on the demo it was great. VR gets little credit for providing these one of a kind games.

For me, games like Wipeout(online racing, full campaign) Dirt Rally(full campaign) Resident Evil 7(way better in VR) and Doom are worth it alone as I racer and horror fan. Skyrim is even really good too but outside is lower res. I have the wires looped on my ceiling in my man cave and its literally no hassle at all.

So far, for me my all time fav consoles are like this.

PS1
SNES
Xbox
NES
PS2
PSVR
Xbox 360
PS4

It's literally up there for me. If immersion is one of your top priorities, its probably for you. I play it more than any console in many years. There are literally tons of games people have no idea about because they discount the tech. It works and its a blast once you have a good setup and educate yourself on the library. It has a lot of variety.

The issue is VR has some problems that technology may never overcome:

-Motion sickness - I've never gotten motion sickness in my life, until I tried VR. Amusement park rides, airplanes, never had a problem. I try VR for a few minutes and I'm already queasy. I've heard similar stories of people having the same problem. I never thought I'd have a problem, but I do. Granted I can play for a bit, but often I look at my VR rig and play something else. Why risk feeling like garbage? That also means that I get 30-40 minutes at the absolute max to play. Anything beyond that and I'm going to need a bucket.

-Space - You need a lot of space for many of the better VR games. Sure, some let you just sit there, but most of the fun ones require you to move. When you move, you can't see what's really around you. I've already almost punched out ceiling tiles in my office playing Superhot VR (great game). I've also found myself nowhere near where I started playing, and have almost knocked over/broken things in the house. I don't think I move in game, but I find myself many feet away from where I started and facing a completely different direction. My PC is right near my gaming TV and I'm terrified I'm going to punch though a screen or something.

I use thin rubber workout mat and place my feet atop it. The mat represents the safe area and as long as I'm on that mat, I can't trip or swing and knock anything over. I only use the entire mat for superhot, most other game I just stand on it. I keep my feet halfway on the edge of the mat too and this tells me exactly the direction I'm facing using the straight up that is lined up with the TV.
