No DD 5.1 support with X1 optical port?

Those are both the cream of each crop. I'd love for games to use this but doubt they will as they're the uncompressed master sample from recording to your speakers. They take up the most amount of room audio wise on the disc. I don't know how they can top these formats in the future. If your receiver has these you have next gen and the gen after covered.

Now then in the settings can you decide how you want the audio to get to the receiver format wise? Or does the game/dev decide how it is encoded still? Do we have a picture of the back of a game.

OO so DTS still = 5.1 surround sound?

Yes DTS is basically the same thing as Dolby Digital, just a different product/company basically. I think DTS is considered to be slightly better than DD because it's more discrete or something, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, DTS and Dolby Digital are lossy and can be sent over optical cable, while DTS HD and DD TrueHD are lossless and can only be sent over HDMI or 6-channel analog ins on a receiver.

Since my receiver doesn't have HDMI and the Xbox One obviously doesn't have multi-channel analog outs I have to use optical and settle for lossy surround, which still sounds fantastic. No dolby digital over optical is very bizarre to me and may cause me problems :(

I'm really wishing I would have picked a different HTS. I didn't realize HDMI would be so important. Really sucks my unit doesn't have it. I just freaking bought it a few days ago at amazon too. >.>. I'm assuming I wouldn't really hear a difference though so i'm going to stick with it. it was all i could afford anyway.

Edit... shouldnt be a problem if you have an AV setup, as most of them will decode.

This is also listed on Astro Website:

"Xbox One: Earlier in October Microsoft announced that the chat adapter required to make all existing Xbox 360 headsets Xbox One compatible will not be released until early 2014. This means that all current ASTRO products will be able to take full advantage of Dolby® Digital 7.1 Surround Sound for game audio, movies, and music, but online voice chat will not function until the chat adapter releases in early 2014. While not ideal, the Kinect mic or Xbox Live Communicator can be used to broadcast your voice online in conjunction with ASTRO products in the interim. ASTRO is a licensed Xbox One partner and we are working with Microsoft on improved solutions for release in 2014."

Now, I dont know what the adapter is all about, but unless you are using HDMI you genearlly cannot get true 7.1 over optical without it being some sort of matrix mix.

Ah now i see it too, Astro doesn't mention DD 5.1 no. Ah well, when i gets my X1, i will hook my Astro A40 up to my Yamaha receiver for DTS.

By the way....isn't sound over HDMI always better than with optical?

Hissatsu return the HTS or box it up and give it 2 someone as a Christmas gift :D Then if money is a issue. .. buy a HTIB and save a buck or 2 :)

Yes Optical is limited to dd or dts lossy (compressed) where hdmi isn't and can do lossless 7.1 dts-hd and Dolby trueHD

Good to know man. But for a headphones, will 7.1 matter at all? I mean...will i hear any difference compared to DTS 5.1 that i now have in some PS3 games?

Depends, everyone is different are you an audiophile? Better yet it is like the comparison difference between ps4 and xb1 multiplat titles. Can you tell without comparing screenshots? If you certainly can then the next question is do you care/is it a big deal for you?

Update from Moderator on Astro forums!!!!!

Hi everyone.

Right then.

I've had it confirmed that the Xbox One will indeed not support any Dolby technology at launch due to a decision made by Microsoft. However, this will not render your equipment unusable or reduce your audio quality. When you receive your Xbox One, you will need to set the optical output to stereo. Our equipment will then take that signal and upscale it to a 7.1 Enhanced Surround Sound signal using Dolby Pro Logic IIx and Dolby Headphone to make it feel more realistic and natural as you've been accustomed to on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

So in the end, no matter which console you choose, you will still have a Dolby Digital experience.

I understand it's a little disheartening hearing this a day before launch and can only apologise for this. I'll be back on the forums in a couple of hours after some rest to answer any questions you might have regarding this situation so feel free to post them now and I'll get you a response as quickly as possible.

You can read our full "press release" here on our facebook at https://www.facebook.com/astrogaming

It's not a huge deal IMO for headsets.. as much as people pay for them, most only have 2 speakers inside of the headset anyways.. there's lots of "simulation" going on anyways.

But for those with no HDMI on their receiver kind of sucks. Discrete >>>>> Pro Logic.

i assumed it would default to prologic which is good. Not ideal..but good.

It really won't be the same sound quality and surround experience we now have with 5.1 right? Or won't it be too bad? I'll probably end up hooking my Astro A40 on my receiver for DTS if this doesn't get fixed/added.

True Bunz,...but the sound experience some of those headsets deliver is truly amazing in my book.

I'm pretty sure pro logic IIx makes a 5.1 signal 7.1 that includes a lossless 5.1.

Sounds like it will be ok then for headphones and maybe just a slight difference with the DD 5.1 or 7.1 that the Astro's do. Still...if i have the opportunity, it is always better to go for a receiver that supports DTS, correct?

Yeah, I think so try both and see if you can tell there is a difference. I'd like to know maybe with headphones it would be more apparent?

Pro Logic and IIx etc I'm pretty sure they just take a stereo signal and do a "virtual" surround, not a real surround.

Anyway, if people kick up a bit of a stink and ask some of these MS social media types about it maybe we'll get Dolby Digital over optical patch. The only reason it wouldn't be there is because MS are being cheap and save something by not having to license it and the games all being DTS and DTS HD I'm assuming.

I don't know actually, I'm dumbfounded about the whole thing it's again some minor thing that happens to be kind of major for some people. Like, just f***ing do everything I'm getting annoyed with these new consoles omitting features that a lot of people just assume are basic functions on electronics equipment.

Can you post a link the the HTS you got? Maybe there's a solution.

I have this system

It supports DTS and all of that stuff. It just doesn't have any HDMI in inputs. Only 1 HDMI out. I didn't realize how big of a deal that was when I bought it but as I understand it I should be able to get 5.1 DTS through the optical cable. I actually ordered a toslink switch box so I could hook up my ps4/xb1 to the receiver at the same time.

@ Valliance it is a HTIB haha. It actually sounds pretty good to me as I've never had any type of speaker system before. I just knew nothing about this stuff and didn't realize HDMI IN was that important so I overlooked it when I read that it didn't come with the ports. I thought optical was good.

They do sound good. I don't really know for a fact if it makes less of a difference compared to a true "discretely placed and positions" speaker setup; just a guess. For all I know it's MORE pronounced.

I don't know too much about 2.1 -> 5.1 from a technical perspective. My experience with film/TV is basically that it just isn't anywhere near the same. But maybe for games it's easier for them to simulate the effect from stereo.

I think it would be real hard to find a receiver without DTS at this point.

on topic of headphones..i've only had stereo headphones and gaming wise i've been impressed at directional sound in games. You can hear things behind you and not just to the side of you.

Didn't see the price per performance benefit of 5.1 or 7.1 headphones though.

No you get DD/TrueHD/DTS HD because its built in and accessed via the Blu-ray player... you won't get those formats via optical but maybe plain DD/DTS 5.1.

Where did you get that from?

Yeah I had a look at the back of your "receiver" and the only way you will get HD audio is by playing a BluRay disc in your actual LG player/receiver.

It's really limited to be honest with you. You can only plug one other thing into the back by way of the optical and you cannot do DTS HD or Dolby True HD over optical. At best you can have DTS and DD from one other device plugged into the optical in.

Honestly you'd be better off to get a low end receiver from Yamaha/Denon/Pioneer/Sony even etc. at $299 price point and piece together the speakers by going used off craigslist, getting old speakers off family/friends etc. you can even not bother with a subwoofer and go 5.0 but having options to input other devices is pretty important. You basically have a BluRay player that has internal amplification.....oh well.
