This is hilarious. Did Microsoft come out and say their main goal this generation is to sell more consoles then the ps4. If so, I must have missed it. They are way ahead in sales at YTD verses where the 360 was in the same time period and the ps3 had not even been released yet. I'm sure everyone at Microsoft is pretty happy how many consoles have sold at a 500 dollar price range and also in only 13 countries as of YTD. I mean coke outsells Pepsi but does that mean Pepsi is in trouble??? Hats off to Sony , they are killing it but at the same time Microsoft has nothing to hang their head about.

Every company's mindset going into a new generation is to become the top dog. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional. You go in to win and be #1, you don't go in and aim for #2, that is not the mindset of a winner.

Sure, MS should still be pretty happy with sales thus far yet I detect a change in Major Nelson's tone in his March NPD announcement this month. Interesting.

People keep saying MS is only in 13 markets but when it launches in the other it will kick ass. My question is what other important market is MS not in? They're already in the biggest and most important markets. Entering Portugal for example won't make a big difference. Benelux might help but it's not as big as the UK's market.

the only other market that will make a difference is china.

While Microsoft's Phil Spencer admits both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are doing "incredibly well," the new head of Xbox says "that’s good for the business, but we’re in this to win."

Right. So just for the hard of hearing: THIS GENERATION JUST STARTED! 5 million is an outstanding number for a $500. Its not over by a long shot. We're only months into this generation. Not even one year. We all know Microsoft could do a price drop, and probably will for that matter.....

Good on Sony for selling 7 million, but they arent the far ahead here in the states, and honestly, they arent that far ahead WW for a competing console thats only in 13 countries. Some are counting their chickens a bit early......real early. JS

It is because the generation just started that there is still hope left for MS to do something about this, otherwise the gap will widen even further.

If MS being in 45 more countries to match Sony and generate more revenue and profits didn't matter then they wouldn't release there.

MS already does great in Europe and North Anerica, but they need deeper market penetration and continued brand recognition.

Of course it will make a difference. Look at last gen. Both were at like 85 million sold after almost 9 years.

Maybe a miracle will happen and Japan as well.
PS4 hasn't fared well over there...
There is a higher chance Taylor Swift will call me, and ask me if I wanted to be his next partner , presumably she need inspiration for a new break up song.

So MS is in 13 territories and Sony is available in how many now?
Well, we can compare with the regions they both have been available, last I checked (in February) , which is fairly long ago to be fair, they lead in every one of them.

NA is the market that keep the ratio between them decent. I am just stating whats on the ground.

I dont know what the relevance of your response was, but thanks for providing it...I guess

There isn't any. Comparing the sales in territories is fine, but you cannot overlook the fact that WW numbers are skewed heavily against MS. Once MS is launched in over 50 countries, then WW numbers will have some bearing.

Not that it matters, each are selling. No one here is going to get a cookie if either "wins"...

Again. 2 million ahead for a console thats in almost triple the amount of territories at a $100 less, isnt THAT impressive. Good job...but I mean, come on....

Exactly.. somehow, the XB1 is doomed though....or NEEDS a price drop... I mean, selling a paltry 4 million or so consoles in a few months is somehow a failure. Nope. They have only failed to NOT pass Sony right now, other than that the console is a success.

It matters, but not as significant as the amount of regions, as some are either small in population, or not as well to do. They probably made up maybe 500,000units of sales for PS4 or something. Yes it does add up to the lead of PS4 over MS, but its not like if MS launch in the rest of the other regions, sales will triple or something. I am just providing a perspective.

It will certainly be closer though.

Yes but the US market made up like 40-50% of the Xbox 360's market share. They do need greater brand recognition but you don't go about that by building a US centric console.
