God of War is the best selling game of 2018 on Amazon US, not just for PS4 but for all video games so it's doing really well here. I know some are trying to downplay it's numbers in the UK by comparing it to UC4 and Horizon, GOW was only on the market for a day or two of tracking, the other two games had longer tracking periods. You also couldn't pre-order it on Amazon UK for several months and that wasn't sorted out until launch day.

Wouldn't be much of a downplay anyway since both those games sold better than any GOW ever did

I just had to poke some fun since I know he is salty about its success.

Hey, Yakuza placed in the Top 10, even with God of War releasing and Far Cry 5 still going strong. That's something. It'll probably drop off the list next week, though.

Woo hoo! 300 copies! lol

I see SoT is out of the Top 10. PUBG still there, though.

That's 300 more than the previous best not 300 copies full stop of course. SoT is 11th

Yeah, I got that. I just thought 300 copies was a pretty squeaky thin margin of victory. That would be bad, if it only sold 300 copies total, lol.

Benji (Reset insider) seems to think it'll do very big numbers.

Oh I wasn't talking about you :) I've read it on other forums and I'm sure there is at least one person I have on ignore here doing the same thing lol.

SoT did well. I was wondering where it would land, especially with Gamepass in the picture and the flak it got. I'd like to know numbers, but we'll have to wait for those. I'm sure they're good.

PS4 has two exclusives on the list, with MLB setting a franchise record. Switch has two exclusives also, with Kirby setting a record (w/o digital). Far Cry tops the list as expected. Good month for everyone.

I hope Rare builds SoT’s up because I really do want to hit the high seas at some point.

I wouldn't expect too much. Microsoft forced Rare to push it out the door and I doubt the player base is really there to support it. It'll get a few updates, but unless they do gangbusters for Rare, I think SoT is sailing into the sunset.

Glad to sea that Sea of Thieves is doing so good. Might be like GT Sport. Slow burn to greatness with more and more content added over time.

Where did you conjure up all that info?

The updates aren't meant to do gangbusters.

https://venturebeat.com/2018/04/24/...5-debuts-as-the-top-selling-game-of-the-year/

Here are the numbers for March:

  • Total: $1.316 billion (down 11 percent from $1.478 billion in March 2017)
  • Hardware: $331 million (down 32 percent from $485 million)
  • PC and console software: $613 million (down 10 percent from $682 million)
  • Accessories: $372 million (up 20 percent from $310 million)
And here is how 2018 is comparing so far to 2017 in terms of year-to-date dollar sales:

  • Total: $3.41 billion (up 15 percent from $2.98 billion in 2017 year to date)
  • Hardware: $925 million (up 13 percent from $817 million)
  • PC and console software: $1.53 billion (up 8 percent from $1.42 billion)
  • Accessories: $956 million (up 29 percent from $740 million)
“Far Cry 5 debuts as the top-selling title of March 2018 and instantly becomes the best-selling title of 2018,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “Far Cry 5 set a new launch month sales record for the Far Cry franchise, with consumer spending on full-game sales nearly doubling that of previous franchise best, Far Cry 3. Publisher Ubisoft is the leading publisher in both March and 2018 year to date (January through March).”

Far Cry 5 swept the console charts, but it’s not the only new game that saw success last month. Microsoft and Rare’s co-op pirate simulator Sea of Thieveslaunched on March 20 and earned a No. 2 spot in the best-sellers list despite only rolling out to Xbox One and Windows 10. Its debut came after several closed-beta sessions that drummed up hype. More than a million players set sail on the open ocean within the first two days, crashing its servers at one point with all their plundering and pillaging.

“Sea of Thieves was the second best-selling game of March, and is the eighth best-selling game of 2018 year to date,” said Piscatella. “Sea of Thieves generated the highest launch month sales for any title produced by developer Rare since tracking by The NPD Group began in 1995.”

Along with Far Cry 5, other franchises also set launch month records. Sony’s MLB 18: The Show and Hal Laboratory’s Kirby: Star Allies both had the best-selling debuts in their series histories.

Hardware and accessories
Compared to March 2017, consumers spent less on hardware last month — $331 million, down 32 percent from $485 million. But year to date, hardware-spending is at a high, generating $925 million so far in 2018. This was driven mainly by Microsoft’s Xbox One, though Sony’s PlayStation 4 remains the best-selling console in March and 2018. The Nintendo Switch 32GB with red and blue Joycon controllers was the best-selling hardware in March and 2018.

While folks weren’t spending as much on consoles last month, accessories saw an uptick thanks to the popularity of multiplayer games like certain wildly popular battle royale hits.

“Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One achieved accessories sales growth of more than 40 percent in both the month of March as well as year to date 2018,” said Piscatella. “The headsets/headphones segment is driving accessories growth across both platforms, likely driven by the increase in popularity of multiplayer games such as Fortnite from Epic Games.”

Wonder if they're offering refunds for over hyping the game and releasing it with no content or if that's just a No Man's Sky and Sony thing. Unless they already do that refund program for all Xbox games? I don't know.

Anyway, i'm sure it will get better with time. Sea of Thieves is a game i'm definitely interested in when it gets more content. Might pick it up this Summer just to support Rare because i've always liked them going back to their days of absolute magic on the N64.

Real shame what Microsoft has done to them. Turning them into a Kinect shovelware company and then a GAAS developer. You had a gold mine Microsoft. You had a gold mine. You still do, but will you ever realize it? That's the question.

Sony didnt offer refunds for GT Sport.

It's simple.

Both Rare and Microsoft knew Sea of Thieves was going to release to poor reviews. I'm sure Rare wanted more time to add content to it before release. MS thought it would be a better financial decision to just get it out the door.

It released, disappointed a lot of people, and has proceeded to drop in terms of most played XBox Live games and Twitch viewership. I think right now it's 17th on most played XBox Live. Last time I checked on Twitch it was at 30th.

Next up, Rare releases a roadmap of sorts that can only be described as a mixture of vague and disappointing.

Microsoft has no confidence in Sea of Thieves. They're going to support it as minimally as possible while the bulk of Rare is working on more lucrative endevers.

It's a shame because it had potential, but MS is moving on from that game.

Nope.

Ni No Kuni 2 was 60% higher than the first game, so that makes 4 records set during March: SoT, Kirby, MLB, and Ni No Kuni.

This is counter-intuitive at first glance, which I think makes it interesting.

Instead of diminishing physical sales (as I would've expected), Game Pass actually boosts physical sales. It must do that by causing more users to sample the game, stream it, and get the word out, which in turn leads to greater physical sales.

Fwiw, this is similar to the somewhat counter-intuitive observation he made about digital "vs" physical. Digital is not cannabilizing the physical market -- that is, physical sales aren't decreasing as digital sales increase. What's happening instead is that the overall market is expanding.

Same here. Instead of a zero-sum game where one thing wins (subscriptions) and another thing loses (physical sales), they both coincide with market growth.

The Xbox and PC online multiplayer pirate adventure will boast sea monsters and skeleton forts – and this is only the beginning.

"We’re talking about being a 10-year title, and it’s what we’ve done already that gives us the confidence to commit to that.”
