Ok, so it looks like it might be US-only. Interesting.

Learn something every day.

My other takeaway from this discussion is that we shouldn't put much stock in "current bestseller" lists, because they are based on hourly data, not on any cumulative stats over a period of time. So they're not very informative or reliable. They're going to shift around considerably, depending on when you check.

I've also noticed that they shift around a lot depending on who is checking. Kvally finds that Xbox is doing very well, and Val finds the opposite. It must be that Heisenberg uncertainty principle.
It must be. Next time I am posting screenshots.....CURRENTLY, as of 3:23PM CDT on May 08, 2018

1. Switch
2. Super NES
3. Xbox One X
4. PS4 Slim
5. PS Pro
6. PS Pro God of War
7. Xbox One S Hot Wheels
8. Xbox One S

Now watch. Val will check later, and Xbox will be down and PS4 up.

Yeah the current list is just a snapshot in time, going by the year to date list gives you a better idea of how well something is really doing.

Yeah, looking at the current list is like trying to gauge how the stock market is doing by looking at a stock ticker. Corn is up 15 cents.

I just looked and corn is actually down 10 cents.

This seems to be blowing up at Resetera.

Looks like we have relatively dependable total sales numbers for the PS4 and XBox One.

The XBox One sold 29.4 million units by the end of 2017.

The PS4 sold 73.6 million units in that same time frame.

The takeaway? XBox One sales have really stalled over the past couple of years. I thought they were well past 40 million at this point .

Refuted by Zhuge. See p. 2 of that thread. There is something off with EA's numbers. He explains it there.

Sounds fishy to me. I think the latest numbers from EA are bible. If they aren't, EA will make corrections shortly. We'll see what happens.

For anyone who's wondering, here's Zhuge's post on the matter:

It's weird because EA said the installed base at the end of calendar 2016 was 79 million. Now they say the installed base is 103 million at the end of 2017.

So if we look at the numbers Sony provided.
PS4 was at 53.4m at the end of 2016. That would put Xbox One around ~25.6m.
PS4 was 73.6m at the end of 2017. That would put Xbox One around ~29.4m

So EA is estimating that Xbox One sold around 3.8m units in 2017. But the Xbox One sold more than that in the US alone.

So the numbers don't add up. Perhaps they're excluding some territory or maybe Pro/OneX?

As I stated in prior threads, the Xbox One installed base is over 35 million globally.

I highlighted the critical part. It's not a matter of who you believe, Zhuge vs. EA. It's a matter of the numbers provided by EA themselves. They don't add up, unless you're willing to believe Xbox One sold only 3.8 million units globally for all of 2017, which we know isn't true. So something is off with their numbers.

If their numbers in 2016 and 2017 are right then they are saying X1 sold less that the NPD says they sold last year.

Is NPD fake news now?

Not any faker than EA's official statement. We'll see if EA feels the need to correct that statement or if they're satisfied with the numbers given. We should know soon enough.

We know already. You're just being pigheaded.

I am surprised by Fortnite being on that list, as it is available on PC, PS4 and Mobile. In fact, it is free to play on PC and PS4 and Mobile. You have to have XBL to play it on Xbox.

You're surprised the the most popular videogame in the history of the medium sold consoles?

But why?

Mat P says Fortnite has been a prime mover of both consoles lately. So these aren't necessarily factors that distinguish them from the competition -- they are factors that help explain why Xbox is doing better than itself (a year ago).

Missed this post yesterday, so just to clarify -- Zhuge isn't a "mysterious Resetera member." He's an administrator at Reset, and he's also an industry analyst; it's his job to know this stuff. He has access to data we do not. He's not mysterious; his real name is Daniel Ahmad. What he says on Reset reflects on him professionally, and he's accountable for it. He's very careful in what he says, and he's probably the most respected sales/data/numbers person there.

Bandai Namco today reported its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, showing gains across most of its business divisions, and overall growth driven primarily by its video game segment.

Company-wide, net sales were up 9.4% to ¥678.31 billion ($6.19 billion), with operating profits up 18.6% to ¥75.02 billion ($680 million). The largest part of those numbers came from its gaming businesses, which saw sales up 14.2% to ¥405.99 billion ($3.70 billion) and operating profits up 24.6% to ¥52.37 billion ($480 million).

The company gave no indication as to which games were particularly strong performers, but Bandai Namco's fiscal year saw the launch of a number of high-profile games, including Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, and Project Cars 2. Bandai Namco games collectively sold 28.87 million copies during the fiscal year, up 13% from the prior year.

For the current fiscal year, Bandai Namco is forecasting full-year sales down 4.2% to ¥650 billion ($5.93 billion), with operating profits down 20% to ¥60 billion ($550 million). Unit sales for games are projected to be down 14% to 24.7 million. The company's home and network games division is forecast to see revenues drop 8.1% to ¥300 billion ($2.74 billion), while its arcade game division could see sales up 10.4% to ¥100 billion ($910 million). Games already announced and expected to launch this year include Soulcalibur VI and Dark Souls: Remastered.

How does he know that? It isn't like a paid game where you could potentially correlate it with a push in sales. It is a F2P game, it isn't bundled, it is free meaning anybody can try it, new and old consumers...and it doesn't seem like a more casual gamer will fork out hundreds for a F2P game.

I am not saying he wrong, I just don't see how somebody could firmly state it as a reason. Especially when there have been more obvious reason for consoles doing better than the year before...Sea of Thieves, PUBG, Game Pass news, etc. I know he added those as reasons too, but still.

Well, ultimately it's just his opinion. It's an informed opinion, but just an opinion. I don't think he knows any of this as fact. He's just giving his assessment of the situation.
