From having a look at the Japanese presentation slides, apparently the reason for the 91% decrease in the operating profit for the entertainment (digital) segment was due to a decrease in repeat title sales and an increase in R&D expenses.

The numbers may not be totally accurate but I doubt they are far off. That being said the Xbox One didn't have supply issues, well that's not true, there was too much supply and they had to yank the kinect out of the box and lower the price.

The Series S has been easy to find for a long time now, the Series X not so much. I'm guessing a lot of people when they think of upgrading from last gen don't want a Series S but $500 is too much for them to spend on a Series X right now. It's currently available on Amazon, gamestop only has one store in my area that has it in stock but you can order it online and have it shipped to a store for some reason lol.

It hasn't helped that 1st party output has been so sparse, you need new games to make people want to pull the trigger and they haven't had much for the non enthusiast crowd so far this gen, at least not enough for them to cough up $500 but hopefully that'll change soon and they will actually start releasing AAA games more consistantly. I don't care about gamepass but I do want the platform to become more attractive, I've only turned my series x on once in the last several months.

Hardware (in units) up almost 40% year on year, selling over 1 million per month. Analysts say Sony on track to hit their 25 million goal. Continued growth in network services outpaces rivals.

PS5 Marketshare grew in the UK since last year due to great sales , demand.

PlayStation 5 sales continue to accelerate in the UK on the back of its new £399 price point.

The deal started two weeks ago and had an immediate impact, with console sales jumping by 75% in that first week. Now into the second week and sales continue to climb, with PS5 units up 59% (revenue is up 51%). Last week was the biggest week of the year so far for PS5 sales in the UK.

The data is courtesy of GfK.

The Standard PS5 SKU is now up 511% compared with the week before the promotions began. The Standard PS5 accounted for 92% of the total number of PS5 consoles sold last week.

So far this year, PS5 unit sales are 73% up for the first 31 weeks of the year, and represents 47% of all home consoles sold this year (whereas this time last year, PS5 accounted for 31% of the market).

We have positioned the accelerated penetration of PS5 hardware as one of the highest priorities in this fiscal year, and we will try to work steadily to implement necessary measures to achieve hardware sales target. Towards the end of the calendar year, the first party title, Marvel Spider-Man 2, and major third-party titles are scheduled to be released as well. And we expect that the entire gaming industry and the PS platform will be greatly energized."

He adds: "By regions, currently in Japan, the sales is strong, and the same holds true for Asia. And about North America, the response to the promotion is quite favorable. In United Kingdom, it’s a bit weak, but Europe as a whole has been performing quite well."

"Over in hardware, and sales of games consoles in July dropped 7% month-on-month in the UK, according to GfK panel data. However, compared with July 2022, sales are actually up 7%.

PlayStation 5 remains the market leading format, with sales once again driven by pricing activity on the standard version of the console. PS5 sold very slightly more units in July than it did in June. By the end of July, PS5 sales are up 68% compared with the same period last year. That's already jumped further in August.

The same isn't true for Nintendo Switch, which saw sales slide 15% in July compared with the month before. Year-to-date, Switch sales are down 8.5% for the first seven months of the year.

In third position is Xbox Series S and X. Microsoft's console saw sales tumble 12% in July compared with June. So far this year, Xbox console sales are down 22.8%.

As an aside, sales of PS4 are up 331% so far this year."

"In total, 2.36 million digital and physical AAA video games were sold in the UK during July, up 31% over the year before.

1.66 million games were sold via digital download stores (up 40% year-on-year), while 701,000 were sold via physical outlets (up 12%).

The highest charting game that was actually released in 2023 was Hogwarts Legacy in sixth position.

In terms of new game released in July, the highest charting title is Pikmin 4 at No.23. Nintendo doesn't share digital sales with the charts, so it may be that the game would have charted higher if we knew the download figures. If we just look at physical sales for the month, Pikmin 4 was the fifth best-selling game."
