They have 0 reason to sell or be bought
I agree but, this is something right up MS alley. Its huge, its successful, its multiplayer, its a new type of battle royal and, I'm pretty sure its going to be cross play. It would speak loudly for the X and the brand, later this year if it were under MS first party umbrella.

Trust me, you don't want crossplay unless they enable mouse/keyboard on XBO.

  • Microsoft is sending over a bunch of staff to both Bluehole in Korea and utilizing their staff in Spain to help port the game while the main team keeps working on the PC version.
  • Microsoft is also helping them with security and anti-cheat design for the PC version.
  • Microsoft is aiding them in designing the controller feel (button mappings, auto-aim, etc) for the game, utilizing their experience in developing console shooters.
  • They also get to share in a lot of Microsoft's Unreal Engine 4 technology extensions. For example, they're considering putting Rare's water tech from Sea of Thieves in the game.
  • When asked about a PS4 version, PlayerUnknown notes that the biggest issue there is that they're incredibly strapped for staff on the team (they're currently trying to go from 120 staff to 300, and the rest of Bluehole's staff has to still handle their other games) that they can only really handle the PC version and the Xbox version currently. As previously mentioned, Microsoft is handling a lot of the Xbox version to boot. Microsoft's early access program (Xbox Game Preview) also lets them put this out while the game is still in early access more easily.

I'm starting to wonder if MS delayed Crackdown 3 because they wanted something bigger to speak for the new console come launch day? PUBG is huge and only getting bigger by the day.

Most powerful console ever + PUBG = Big deal!

It wasn't delayed, Microsoft was just 'speading out their lineup' because gamers hate games arriving on time. Who wants to play exclusives between July-December? January - April is where its at.

They also sent over this bed for the devs to relax on during busy coding sessions

Dat Rare water. DO IT!!! Especially if it helps with performance, I know the water in Sea of Thieves can scale down very well. Throw in some Fable Legends lighting while we're at it.

Right, even with crossplay toggled off on Gears 4 i swear some people have mouse/keyboard. Auto aim Boltok and s***, it's ridiculous.

crickets. so sad.

I get the feeling (regardless of CD3) that PUBG really IS being held back, so it can drop in Preview with the launch of the X. Microsoft needs some good press, given the dearth of new exclusive titles this year. And there's no better buzz than showing off the year's biggest game running on the X. I imagine that they could probably put it out now for the One and S (if the version they showed at GamesCom, running on a PC, is any indication of where it's at), but you never get a second chance to make a first impression. So, they hold off for another couple months, let the IGNs and Gamespots get their grubby hands on PUBG first via Microsoft's new premium product before following up with the inevitable side-by-side comparisons with the notably lesser versions, and everyone goes home singing the praise of X. Value is added to the new console, the "no games" narrative goes away, and MS comes out a winner.

Or on the other hand, maybe they're still nowhere close to releasing this game, and we'll be lucky to see it in 2017. Fingers crossed it's the former, as this game has the power to move consoles at Christmas.

Good article. It also pointed out that they won't go down the Ark road, instead will keep pricing around $30. Nice.

Microsoft in talks to extend PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Xbox One exclusivity

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been the surprise hit of 2017, racking up over 10 million sales and counting since its March debut on Steam's Early Access program. While a simple concept, the "Battle Royale" shooter has garnered a passionate following during its brief time on the market and current sits among the most played games on PC.

Back in June at E3 2017, Microsoft announced a partnership with the game's developer, Bluehole, which would see PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds hitting Xbox One ahead of other consoles. Since, Microsoft Studios has stepped onboard as the publisher on the platform, with a seemingly close relationship between the two firms in preparing a console debut. Now, according to a new report from Bloomberg, Microsoft and Bluehole are in talks to extend this exclusivity agreement, preventing expansions to further platforms over a longer period.

According to Bloomberg, Bluehole met an agreement with Microsoft to produce the game first on Xbox One in 2017, however, talks are now underway to extend this period further into next year. Although Bloomberg expanded little on the deal and how long exclusivity may last, the report stated these types of deals typically last "for about three months," prior to an extension. With Microsoft yet to clarify its agreement for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds outside of "launch exclusivity," it's still hard to gauge an idea of how long such a deal may last.

I heard it's only timed exclusive and there will be a Switch 5000 version in 2872! So if you're prepared to wait 855 years you can play it on the go.

Didnt he say no to exclusive content?

My strategy is more around our own first party franchises, and investing in franchises that we own, and probably fewer exclusive deals for third party content. I want to have strong third party relations, but paying for many third party exclusives isn’t our long term strategy. This year, the fact that we’re shipping Halo 5, Gears of War, Forza 6, Fable, we can only do that and build that best line-up we’ve ever seen really on the back of franchises that we own.

Spencer was asked about how Sony is continuing to lock down third-party deals and how difficult that makes his job. His response was definitely an interesting one.

“So, they don’t “gobble” the deals up. They buy them. You know, I read the same things you do, and I know some people think it’s somehow less expensive to sign third-party exclusives if you have a bigger market-share. I can tell you, it has nothing to do with market share.”

And yeah exclusive content is worse for gamers than exclusive games?

“I don’t know what deals get written. I’ve been pretty open about, I’m not a fan of doing deals that hold back specific pieces of content from other platforms. You don’t see that in the deals we’ve done with Assassin’s and Shadow. We’ll have a marketing deal on those, but I don’t say, hey, I need some kind of Strike or skin somebody else can’t play.

What does that have to do with a timed exclusive though?

This game isn't exclusive.

It's also not a case where content is held exclusive to one particular platform for up to 2 years even if you have already paid for it.

Depends on your perspective... in that case, you haven't paid for that exclusive game, at all. The content though, you may have already put money up for content and then are forced to wait to the content you've paid for is completely irrelevant and useless. Both are kind of messed up in their own way, I'd say the one where your actual money - investment has been f***ed with is worse, but thats me.

Neither of these situations describe PUBG though.

If you have a problem with actual 3rd party games being $$-d into being actual exclusives though, it's funny you'd bring it up in an Xbox thread when we both know Sony has been doing a ton of that this gen.

There is no mention that they won't do it in there. In fact, he says "fewer" not, "no". People looking to blow what he says to unrealistic proportion? Err, that Phil Spencer is such a dirty liar!

I will say, GAF will have a field day with this one...

For the record I am fine with them doing this but whats worse Destiny content exclusive to PS4 for a year or Destiny exclusive to PS4 for a year? Pretending to be above one while doing the other is comical.

So you want release date parity from indie developers?

If a game is out on multiple consoles everyone should get the same content at the same time. Big 3rd party publishers shouldn't really be doing timed exclusive games.

Indies are odd and in this case the games not finished and from interviews MS are helping them more than anyone would have thought. But do they need that MS money to get the game done? 10M and counting on steam would probably mean no.

But PS4 owners shouldn't have to wait say a year for this that's for sure.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being disappointed that one is being denied. That's natural.

I don't, however, hold it against companies trying to compete for dollars and trying to make their platform more desirable as a result. It can be annoying for us Gamers, but I believe it's pretty vital in keeping the competition healthy. Obviously, I have more respect for the action when they are involved in the actual production instead of sliding in buying someone else's work after-the-fact.

As far as PUBG goes, I believe MS is Publishing and providing additional resources to improve the game, so I would expect them to expect some benefit from the act. The game might have taken much longer to reach the platform otherwise, and may even have come at a lower quality standard.
