Official Thread Playstation VR

That sure makes VR more tempting. I love Skyrim, so that part going from 6:10 to 6:40, really makes me want to jump in. The part starting at 5:00 is pretty funny, too.

Good job keeping this thread up to date, dead.

How many people here own PSVR? Three or four?
I have one. Topping the RE7 experience will be tough. I need to finish it off.

I literally had to psych myself up for that game before I would play it.

Truly was an accomplishment to finish, anyone who can play that all the way through I will give credit. Amazing and frightening.

Cool post from a gaf guy about his experience with modern gaming, VR and 4K
I finally got to try native 4k and HDR today on a Samsung ks9000. Coming from a calibrated 1080p 32inch samsung telly, I was not surprised at all. HDR is barely an improvement, and native 4k on a 55 inch barely looks better than supersampling + 1080 on the 32 inch. And trust me, I am pretty strict about IQ.

If anyone was on the fence about investing in VR or 4k HDR due to a limited budget... VR is unquestionably better in my opinion. Proper 4k costs much, much more money and barely changes anything. VR changes absolutely everything.

Like, even leaving how much it changes the games themselves aside, from a purely visual standpoint Driveclub VR is much more appealing to me than, say, Forza 7 4k HDR footage. There's something magical about experiencing the atmosphere, lighting and the beautiful colors of the supercars while you are IN the game, even if the graphics and resolution are really poor compared to non-VR standards.

I've seen a number of posts like that at GAF -- people saying 4K doesn't produce all that much benefit, and that VR is the real game-changer. No matter how pretty the picture, the inherent nature of the gaming experience does not change with 4K or HDR. It's a prettier version of the same thing. Whereas VR fundamentally changes the gaming experience.

That's why as a gamer I'm mad at myself for not trying VR sooner. Even in this very thread I called it a gimmick before trying it. lol

I could barely finish the demo. I'm such a p****. I can't imagine how messed up I would have been from the VR version! Lol
One game that I think could translate well to VR, is Metal Gear Solid 2. So much of the stealth/peak elements could work.

And how do you feel about VR, Pureshooter? What are your impressions/opinions?
I like it, but honestly after about an hour or two I usually need a break. It isn't the most comfortable device for me personally, but it is much better now than it was initially. It takes a while to figure out how to set it perfectly on your head.

I will say that there is nothing else like it. One of the reasons I play games is so I can forget about everything else for a bit. I've never been "transported" like I have with VR. The immersion is unmatched. I forget about work, kids, wife, where I am, etc. I feel genuine surprise to see I'm in my office when I take the headset off.

I get lost in really good 2d games like Skyrim and combined with VR, I cannot imagine how much it will elevate gaming.

Gotcha. That's better than the 30-minute reports I've heard from others. I usually don't play games for more than an hour anyway.

Damn. Speaking my language.

Is it a pain to set up and calibrate?

Set-up isn't a pain if you do it right. I use an HDMI splitter and have PSVR going to one HDMI and PS4 Pro to another. It avoids all the plugging and unplugging. Calibration is a breeze.

Man I was a huge pilotwings fan back in the day, rooting for this to come soon

Is the HDMI splitter something that applies only if you have 4K/HDR TV, or would that be necessary with a 1080p as well? I'm thinking it has something to do with HDR getting lost otherwise, although I may be mistaken. I'm still at 1080p.

It's just an HDR issue. You should be fine w/o a splitter.

I just wanted to chime in about Farpoint after finishing for the second time. Ready to dive into the DLC single player now.

Overall, this game is a very solid shooter, the immersion blows away any sci fi game I've ever played in my 30 years of gaming. The only thing that comes close to immersion is RE7 PSVR.

Pros
+Mechanics and gunplay is unmatched in VR, you feel like you firing a weapon and ADS in VR, unparalleled. The guns feel punchy and throaty.

+Story, this was surprisingly interesting with great voice acting

+Enemy variety, at first it seems like nothing but spiders, but just wait

+Incredible sense of scale, good textures, lighting, and environmental effects

Cons
-a bit too short

-the AIM controller looks stupid compared to how it feels ingame. They could have done better than a taping a couple dildos together.

-some of the artwork looks samey the first 2 hours

I mean this game is a fvcking looker on pro, makes me feel like I got my money's worth out of the machine more than 4K, being in VR adds so much to these scenes I can't explain it.

It feels like being INSIDE of halo in some ways.

Not to bring up the competition, but it's too bad that Microsoft has no immediate plans for VR. Halo VR would be awesome. But I was really thinking about how cool Sea of Thieves would be in VR.

Although, those waves in VR, lol.

Yeah, those two games both seem like no-brainers to me. Both first person, but two very different kind of experiences... also Forza 7. You want a racing sim to actually be fun for everyone? VR is the way to do it! It's pretty ironic that they may not exactly have all the correct software to showcase Scorpio, but they already have some real VR showcase hopefuls, but sadly, with no actual VR announced.

I'm really surprised that Phil has a PSVR and still makes a statement about VR being 5 yrs away from mass market. I'm also really saddened that he seems to be spending so much time listening to people on Twitter and in forums instead of just feeling the heart beat, and innovating new ground. He is just too scared to touch VR and motion controls, which is really a shame because Microsoft has sooo much R&D already invested. If they don't jump on board next year with something forward-thinking, I will just know that they are not the innovators that they once were.

I honestly think I'm going to spend money on PSVR this holiday season instead of Xbox One X. I really do believe in voting with my dollars. If enough people buy PSVR, maybe Phil will finally get the message.

As a bonus, you'll get access to a whole new library of games that even ps4 owners don't get, much less Xbox. Feels like another console altogether to me.

Pilotwings (SNES) remains one of my favorite games of all time. There was a unique feeling while playing it, and I don't think I've felt that since. I spent most of my time back in Super Monkeyball just playing the gliding levels, chasing that feeling again. I feel like I've been waiting forever to feel that combination of flying and chasing targets. I really hope this game comes close to that feeling.

PSVR is building up a nice library in a short period of time.

I think I'll put my VR dreams on hold for a while. A number of reasons -- concern about the wires/cables, not sure I have the space for it, concerns about intensity/fatigue factor, laziness factor, inability to demo a unit, concerns over tracking, not ready to play Skyrim again, thinking of putting the money toward a Switch instead, etc. But it does look like really interesting, immersive technology. I'd like to get into it at some point, maybe a couple years from now.

I was reading a long thread at GAF today about someone who'd discovered the joys of VR after being cynical about it for a long time:

"Don't Be Like Me and Judge VR Before Trying It"

I was reading that thread as well, I have serious doubts many of those people tried VR. I've had so many people try my unit and those opinions were not what I witnessed here and at demo kiosks with dozens of others.

That thread proves why I don't like gaf, it's like another reality were VR isn't fun or meh. Even a few other VR owners mentioned that. PSVR might as well be Xbox to alot of those guys. Never heard or saw a single reaction like many of those and I've shown mine off alot.

It's always, "omg, that's better than I thought."

I'm with you on getting a switch instead though, solid console, cheaper choice, and less risky due to the fact that don't have a chance to demo it, but that gaf thread proves even more about my suspicious of the people there.

Hmm. Okay. It helps me to hear a wide range of opinion, rather than just a couple of people talking about it. There was plenty of people dismissing it, but it was clear they hadn't tried it, just wanted to put their 2 cents in. There were plenty of people praising VR. Plenty of people who had tried it and didn't feel it was for them. As the OP said, many of these probably tried it out in early forms, or under poor conditions, or a bad demo, etc. But I'm sure some gave it a reasonable try and just didn't like it, for whatever reason, or liked it but didn't see it as worth the cost and trouble. VR isn't going to be for everyone. They've also got a dedicated PSVR thread over there that seems pretty positive, most of the time I visit.

I never thought all negativity was nonsense, I have my own complaints that mirror some of those, but there a lot comments that were just bizarre and I never see them posting in any of the VR threads(I frequent gaf), just decided to pop and basically say, "VR sucks" and leave.

Yeah, I've been reading GAF for about 8 years now, so I like to think I'm pretty good at separating the wheat from the chaff. I don't pay much attention to the one-liner negativity. I pay attention to people who give specifics, or who go into some detail about what they liked and didn't like.

One of the things that occurred to me as I was reading the thread was that I would need to demo the unit before trying it. That had occurred to me before, but it didn't really sink in until I was reading that thread. I called around, and unfortunately no stores in my area have a PSVR demo (not surprising; I live in a small city). I don't have any friends with VR units, so I think I'm out of luck, in terms of being able to demo a unit, which makes VR a no-go for me, for the time being.

I asked in that thread, and I'll ask it here, too: do you find that VR makes "normal" gaming less enjoyable? Do you find yourself playing a normal game and wishing it were in VR instead?
