I just noticed this game. I've playing a lot of fun, pleasant, rather lighthearted games lately, and I thought maybe I could do with something a little darker. Then I heard this game was going to be set in New Orleans (ish) in the late 1960's. That sounded good. Then I noticed it's coming out October 7th, in about 2 months, yet I didn't see much talk/buzz around it (maybe I just haven't been paying attention).
Figured it was worth a thread bump.
Here's a brief recap I found:
(excerpts)
Set during 1968 in the city of New Bordeaux we'll be covering events spanning 9 months instead of years like in the previous Mafia games. We'll also be playing as Lincoln Clay, an orphaned and mixed race war veteran of Vietnam who came back and was betrayed.
Interestingly the whole story of Mafia III is actually interspersed with a documentary that's being told, and touches on all the major events that happen through Lincoln's war against the mob.
Mafia III introduces something of 'business management' to the mix but what it really means is you'll be dividing up territory you've poached to your new family.
There's no strict way to tackle most things in Mafia III as Hangar 13 made sure most scenarios can be approached how you prefer.
Developer Hanger 13 hasn't shied away from a particular issue when it comes to this 1968 re-imagined New Orleans. Racism was rampant during this time in American history and the team felt it would be a disservice to pretend it wasn't.
We'll get to see the cleaner and more affluent areas but also the most deprived quarters and even explore the crime and predator infested bayou.
