I think Destiny 1 release is probably a fair expectation for Sea of Thieves at launch. Difference is that Sea of Thieves is going to be built up over the course of years and there won’t be that cut-off like we saw from Destiny 1 to Destiny 2. If not for Destiny 2 ruining everything for the hardcore Destiny fans, they wouldn’t be so disgruntled.

At some point Rare needs to put Sea of Thieves out in the wild to get mass feedback and iterate from there. I expect the game to feel very different in 2019. It will be a paid beta in some respects this year. Spencer was openly talking about some of the depth just added during a Major Nelson interview and it sounds like more new stuff is coming.
I agree and frankly I don't mind too much as long as the multiplayer gameplay and depth is strong enough. One thing I'm curious about is if you can play this game effectively without the mic. I don't really talk when I play multiplayer games, nor do I like listening to others talk, so that might be the kiss of death for me.

I never really use a mic while gaming anymore, but I bought a headphone/mic combo for this game. This difference is that this game requires a level of cooperation beyond "flank left". I think you could get by on just hearing other gamers discuss what they are doing, but I believe that would make the the weakest link in the crew.

That said, the solo ship is still pretty fun. It's a lot to do for one person, but everything's closer on the small ship, and you still encounter other ships... who will find that hitting your smaller ship with a cannon ball is quite difficult to do.

I’m ok with being part of a paid beta too as long as the initial content is fun. I’ve heard of people putting in lots of hours into the alpha and still enjoying it.

As for mics, while I do agree there needs to be a fun single player or no mic mode, I’m actually looking forward to using a mic with this one. I think this community could be refreshing and far less toxic than the average community in other games. Also with latency not being the issue it is in many multiplayer games, hoping to play with gamers from around the world. Can’t wait to have Trump/Brexit conversations with Europeans. Lol

They do have an emote system that seems to get the job done, but they also have a lot of little things that do help non-miked people. For instance, there is a cool little voting system to determine what quest you will actually go on where everyone can put a quest on a table and every votes on which quest to do. If you are in the crow's nest, you have a bell that you can ring if you see anything. Little stuff like that.

It would obviously be better with a mike, but definitely do-able without one.

I know what I'm doing this week!

[Q]: When will the Closed Beta be running?

[A]: The Closed Beta will open at 12pm GMT on Wednesday 24th January and will run until 8am GMT on Monday 29th January. For those in other time zones, this works out as:

· Eastern Standard Time (EST):
7am on Wednesday 24th January to 3am on Monday 29th January

· Central Standard Time (CST):
6am on Wednesday 24th January to 2am on Monday 29th January

· Pacific Standard Time (PST):
4am on Wednesday 24th January to 12am on Monday 29th January

· Central European Time (CET):

[Q]: How can I get access to the Closed Beta?

[A]: The Closed Beta will be accessible to eligible players who joined the Sea of Thieves Insider Programme before December 1st 2017 or who have pre-ordered the game.

If you pre-ordered the game through the Xbox or Windows Store, the game will appear in your games library 24 hours before the Closed Beta begins. You will need to download and install it.

If you pre-ordered the game through a retailer, you will need to redeem the code for the Black Dog cosmetic pack. Once you have done this, the game will appear in your games library 24 hours before the Closed Beta begins. You will need to download and install the game.

If you haven’t pre-ordered the game yet but you want to get into the Closed Beta, you can pre-order Sea of Thieves here.

[Q]: What content will be available in the Closed Beta?

[A]: We’ve crafted a bespoke experience for Closed Beta players that has been designed to give everyone a taste of the pirate life that they can expect in the full version of the game at release. We won’t be testing the full game during the Closed Beta phase: we want to keep a good selection of things up our sleeves for players to discover at launch.

[Q]: Can I stream or capture my play sessions in the Closed Beta?

[A]: Yes. The Closed Beta will not be covered by an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) so you can stream, capture, clip and screenshot to your heart’s content. If you do create content, make sure you tag it “Sea of Thieves” so we can see it too – we’ll also be sharing some of our favourites on our social channels and website. We are incredibly excited to see the content you create and the stories you tell!

We’re looking forward to sailing with you on the Sea of Thieves! Stay in touch with us via our social channels for updates and dive into our Forums to join the conversation – we’d love to hear what you think. See you out there, pirates!

I won't be able to play until tonight (work).

None of my screenshots of the beta are showing up on xboxclips.com. Totally gay.

So I was on a ship with this guy this morning. I was waiting for the others to join us, but they never did. So I raised the anchor, and my teammate raised the sails and off we went. I have no idea where we were going. Eventually the storms came in, lightening was all around us...even light flashes in the clouds. It was dark, and the waves were coming up as high as the ship. Music was getting dark, and then eventually the storm was so bad that the waves tipped the ship over and it started to sink. I jumped up out of the water onto the bottom of the ship (it was upside down now) and eventually it went under. So me and this guy were out in the middle of no where, in huge waves, swimming our hearts out. Then a shark ate the f*** out of me.

It's number one on Mixer right now too, but NO WHERE close to Twitch numbers.

I tried the betas multiple times and I just can't get into the game. Maybe with a good group it would be different.

It's a shame I can't share the HDR shots on Xbox Live but here are a few I took earlier.

I don't think going solo in this game is a good idea. Your just a free lunch for others lol
