A couple of recent hands-on previews:

IGN: RATCHET & CLANK PS4 HANDS-ON: LIVING THE PIXAR DREAM

"...this is looking to be one of the most visually impressive games of this console generation. No matter what planet I chose to play through, I couldn’t help but walk away slack-jawed by the stunning art direction and lively atmosphere."

The Verge: Ratchet & Clank on PS4 might be the best-looking game I’ve ever played

"The combination of absolutely gorgeous visuals and familiar, but modernized gameplay makes the new Ratchet quite possibly the ideal video game remake. It has the core elements you remember, from the quirky sci-fi setting to the fast-paced action, but repackages them in a way that feels right in 2016."

Here's a half hour of gameplay:

I'm an old Ratchet and Clank fan. It was one of the first console games I enjoyed, back on the PS1. I'm probably not going to pay full price for it (because I've already played the first game twice), but I'll want to play it eventually. They've made so many changes that it seems like essentially a new game.

Ratchet and Clank is 40 so I'll get it day 1. I need something colorful in between Darksouls sessions. That game is seriously depressing when you dont take breaks.

Yeah, I can't play dark-grim games too long, or it starts to drag me down.

I forgot this game was $40... that's a nice discount. I might pick it up. I'm tempted. Like the guys say at the end of that video, they are returning to what made Ratchet and Clank great.

I'm impressed with how much work seems to have gone into it. Graphics are the most noticeable upgrade, but watching that 30 minute gameplay segment, I can see they've added parts to levels, added lots of extra touches, added weapons, added lots of dialog, and changed the appearance and behavior of the enemies. It will feel familiar, but also new.

Wow, I can barely recall beating this game way back when but there were a few familiarities in watching the video. Looks enough like a completely new game at this point and will be buying sometime for sure, maybe not Day 1, just depends on dat backlog.

Looks amazing and it's only $40. Talk about a steal. Ratchet & Clank was one of my favorite series last gen. I didn't really play much of it during the PS2 days so it's still fresh to me.

Here's a comparison of PS2 and PS4 gameplay for about 30 minutes. It gave me a better idea of the changes.

The Story trailer has over 3 million views on youtube. The sales might surprise Sony and a few other developers hopefully. If people want more platformers they should buy this time.

Played the demo for this at best buy a few days ago, insanely gorgeous game and pulled off extremely well for what it is.

It was either this or QB to buy now and the other to wait. If this had come out before QB I would have likely picked this to play first. As such this will be a summer time sale purchase. As long as it stays true to it's roots there is no reason this shouldn't hit high 80's on Meta.

Made you look Val!

Out next week.

I'm considering it. My main hangup is that I'm not sure how new it will feel. I replayed the first game a few years ago on PS3 and don't want it to feel repetitive. However, when I hear things like this, I have hope:

"We ended up with a new game, with elements based on the original — but now with modern controls, several new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new Clank gameplay, all new boss fights, new flight sequences, and more… all constructed to take advantage of the graphical prowess of PS4. Throw in James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, and you have a new beginning."

The review embargo lifts Monday. Here is one that slipped out the gate early. 9 out of 10:

"With extraordinary attention to detail and a slew of warranted, purposeful additions to core content and gameplay, Ratchet & Clank on the PS4 is well worth the price of entry."

p.s. Here's another early review. 8.7

I have this pre-ordered on the playstation store, I've never bought an R&C game before so this will be all new to me.

It means IGN struggled to play a kiddie game. How casual!

Running 87 on Open Critic, based on 26 reviews. They say that puts it in the top 4% of games rated on the site.

A few quotes:

  • New Ratchet & Clank game captures all of the fun of the original.
  • Ratchet & Clank is a veritable power fantasy fueled by rockets and carried by specialty gadgets.
  • A glorious looking debut for Ratchet & Clank on PS4 that retains the superb ebb and flow the series has always had. It doesn't do a huge amount new, but what's here is great fun.
  • Insomniac has not only reinvigorated a fan favorite but they’ve done it in their signature style.
  • Ratchet & Clank is more than a reboot. It's a love letter.
  • Ratchet & Clank is a stunning addition to the PlayStation 4's library, and offers a very enjoyable, modernized take on the gameplay of its 2002 inspiration.
  • Whether you're a seasoned Ratchet & Clank player or if you're new to the series, this one is well worth the budget asking price.
  • You might be tired of being asked to buy the same game twice, or perhaps you’ve been burned before by a low-quality movie tie-in, but don’t let that put you off, as this is one of the best console exclusives this generation.
  • The deep and rewarding weapon system, beautiful and varied worlds, and charming-as-heck story make it an adventure that anyone with a PlayStation 4 should strap in for.

This game is reviewing really well, I'm very much looking forward to playing it.

I'm still undecided about whether I'll buy it. I've been burned by a lot of my gaming purchases lately, so I'm a little hesitant. But I'm glad it's getting so well reviewed. It's nice to see Insomniac hit one out of the park.

I have a soft spot in my heart for R & C, since it was one of the first console games I ever enjoyed. I get a little tired of all the smashing and bolt-collecting, but the gameplay has a lot of variety, so I never really get bored. I like the stupid humor, too. It's a nice break from the grim/dark testosteroney thick-neck tough guy stuff we get too much of. This is a game you play just for the fun of it.

With regard to game length, Insomniac says 11 hours without doing everything. It's somewhere around 10 to 12 on average, from what I've heard. A lot depends on how much of the optional extras you choose to do.

I might pick it up this week. I don't know yet. If it was full price i'd wait but Ratchet & Clank seems like the perfect filler game before you know what drops next month.

This game is my comfort food and I am absolutely loving it. I'm sure graphically this is what the artists had in their heads when they designed the first one. I can only hope this will lead to another Sly (I have given up hope for a new Jak.)
These past few weeks have been Christmas for me, last week Quantum break, playing my favorite game series now with Ratchet, and Dark Souls is waiting in que for me to start!

I hope we get more of these type of remakes. True generational jump(s) visually and major reworking of the environment and gameplay.

Sony could bring back so many franchises like this. Hell let someone remake Jak and Daxter
