That's amazing. I thought they hadn't reached it yet.

During Sony's Gamescom briefing today, the company announced that the PlayStation 4 has now sold 10 million units. That's 10 million consoles sold through to consumers, not shipped, Sony's Jim Ryan pointed out. This is up from the 7 million units sold as of April 6.

Both the PS4 and Xbox One went on sale in November 2013. The Xbox One sold 3 million units by the end of the year, but Microsoft has not announced a new sales update since, though the company has revealed the console has shipped over 5 million units.

Sure pays to be released in like 60 countries. Nice work Sony! WOOT!

Oh god let that crap go, when MS releases in those other countries it's not even going to amount to a million in sales.
No need to bring MS into the equation. This is a Sony sales thread.

Very impressive numbers. But I will never understand the gloating and constant bickering back and forth about worldwide sales from certain manufacturers. Unless you are personally getting some kind of royalties from either Microsoft or Sony per console sold, whatexactly are you gaining? SMH.

SMH?

You gain confidence of more games & apps supports, & probably more exclusive contents & games.

We for one, know many developers bypass WiiU due to poor sales.

Also higher sales & more people buying next gen games means more developers will concentrate on make games design to take advantages of next gen hardwares.

Its no wonder why MSFT is getting more aggressive in securing third party content.

I just hope Sony doesn't revert back to its more arrogant ways. I've already seen a hint of it in their statement on EA Access.

And console gaming is dead...

10 million in what 9 months is bonkers! That 14 million estimate wasn't to far off. Hats off to Sony!

I can see it from the console manufacturer, for exactly the reasons @starseeker says. I have a hard time accepting it from consumers and even more so from Internet jockeys who don't even own the said console they're all up about...

so you're comparing the Wii U to the Xbox one? Lol. No. Microsoft is not Nintendo. Microsoft is doing just fine, not as well as Sony but better than they were the same time when the 360 was on sale for the same number of months. they will continue to have great games and great developer support. I don't see that going anywhere anytime soon. especially everything that happened with the Tomb Raider exclusive deal today. I own both consoles and fortunately get to take advantage of the best offerings from Microsoft and Sony. my hats are off to both companies but could care less as to which one sells more because its not going to affect my quality of life in the slightest.

No they are not...ppl need to see past the PR... the only reason that xbone is "doing better" than 360 is because the 360 was in very low supply in the first year... People forget this...but it works wonders in PR statements.

Both the Xbox One and PS4 have similar hardware architecture and both systems have large userbases (PS4 being larger obviously). Both will continue on getting good support -- especially AAA solely based on how expensive those games are to make.

Anyway, really good news. Wasn't expecting it to hit 10 million until September with Destiny.

there is a reason a few exclusives have gone to the PC and others multiplat, including Sony's system.

but don't take my word for it though http://www.gamespot.com/articles/crytek-we-are-not-100-happy-with-xbox-one-sales/1100-6421586/

having said that, i would think the amount of units sold thus far has a lot to do with exclusivity with the competition steadily increasing their lead. it only makes purchasing an exclusive that much harder with minimal results, hence the time limit behind it.

Great news, other than the lack of blockbuster games out of the gate, sony deserves it completely

That's awesome. I thought it would take until at least the end of August. 10 million PS4's sold in less than a year. Sony is on an impressive run.

I love my ps4. It's a great price for a great peice of kit. It's no surprise it's selling well but that's still a massive number. Hopefully they'll start to invest some more in the online side of things for multi player.

The people that keep saying MS is doing fine, look at how aggressive they've had to be and they are still far behind. I know people like to keep saying "It's doing better than the 360" but that's not going to last for long, it's on track to be behind the 360 in sales later this year. So far they've given away TF for free, they gave Fifa 14 away in some parts of the world, they've offered a kinectless bundle even though they spent months saying they'd never do it, now they are going to be giving Madden away for free with new hardware. That's not what a company who feels good about their position does, it IS what a company that feels a lot of pressure to improve does.

Sony has been at least one step ahead the entire time and have made almost all the right moves so far this gen. They announced first, they had better hardware, they had the right message in the lead up to launch, they had the right pricing, they made sure that they didn't give a single advantage to the competition. That's not to say everything has been perfect but in comparison to the X1 and WiiU the PS4 seems like it's in a league all it's own right now.

So you think this aggressive strategy as a bad thing ? Or a desperate thing? I'm not sure I understand the main point your making. Ultimately it is software that will sell the hardware. To aggressively pursue a policy like this Microsoft are planning ahead and it shows good foresight in my opinion. Also I think you are to casual in dismissing Xbox one sales. It has to be at least around the 6 million mark. That is not a small install base by any margin. Its ridiculous to even suggest that an install base of that many is a negative thing even when compared to the massive Sony sales.

Yep around 16 M next gen consoles sold. So much for gaming being in trouble.
