Sony, Once Again, Is Holding Back the Gaming Future

It doesn't hurt them. Sony acting like PSN is safe for all and Xbox isn't is just pure BS.

I agree 100% about the safety claim, I don't think that's Sony's actual position it was likely just Ryan talking out of his ass.

Yup. This is why i ride with Microsoft. They're the most pro consumer company not just in gaming, but any field. Sony, lol. For the gamers? More like for the pockets. Greed Awaits.

And before anyone brings up the DRM debacle of 2013 just save it. Microsoft was in tune with what the future of gaming is going to be. It was going to be great. An all digital future with the power of the cloud.

Did anyone ever teach you that two wrongs don't make a right?

I was told

I started this thread, but I also don't think any company is perfect. Microsoft has a habit of abandoning platforms and leaving users with nothing. I think that this might be their worst trait. They abandoned Windows Phones users, Kinect users, Zune users, Groove users, plus a whole lot more. At least they usually try to make amends, somehow, but not for Windows Phone users. Glad I didn't fall for that one. They were giving out free Kinect adapters for S purchases. That kind of thing is really nice to see. They also completed their Groove contracts through Spotify. Another nice touch. They could still do more, though.

On the other hand, I admit to being a little jaded about my PSVR processor not shutting off when the console is in low power mode. Sony refuses to except that this is even a defect. Now they slipped in a new model that fixes the issue, as well as their HDR passthrough fail. What do they offer the early adopter? Nothing. Not even a piece of free software. They just don't appear to have the customer's best interest at heart.

Sorry, this has gotten off track. I do think that Sony putting the customer to the back seat is definitely a trend, though. I would love for them to prove me wrong, and open up this unwanted online barrier. How much would this really hurt their lead? Shouldn't the lead be about quality 1st party games and quality hardware? Now it's about where the online pool already is? Customers are OK with this? I really can't see how people can defend this kind of thing, when it is blatantly segregating gamers. If Sony can't maintain a huge lead because existing users can now play against Xbox and Switch gamers, there is a lot more wrong with Sony. That is no way to maintain a lead, imo.

People acting like this is something new and somehow Sony is a villain is a bit of a joke. MS was the first one to start a walled off and paid online service and it set the precedent for what we have now. Do you have a hard time finding people to play with on Xbox live? would you really even notice if people were playing from PSN? I guess it just depends on who your gaming friends are, nearly all of my XBL friends from the first two Xbox consoles seem to not have an xbox one, hell I didn't until the One X came out and it's rare that I ever see more than 1 person signed in on my XBL friends list.

Most people likely already own the same console their friends do, I really don't think it's going to make a big difference either way unless you open up ALL MP games to that and even then MS benefits far more than Sony because there will be way more people added to their side than they add to Sony. What's going to happen next? Are people going to start saying "I bought Assassin's Creed on my Xbox One so I should get a PS4 copy as well"? It wouldn't surprise me if that's next.

Please stop bringing up last generation! That's the worst tired BS mantra. Please give me an instance where Sony actually put a game on the table that had cross-platform multiplayer in place. That was apparently all smoke. They never followed through, did they? There are several in the here and now that would work off the bat, without the artificial barrier in place.

Most people have friends on the same console, eh? My friends and work mates are probably an even split. I would definitely like to be able to play against both groups without having to buy 2 copies out Rocket League, which is already set for cross-platform, which is being blocked.

Honestly, I would love to have both versions of a single game with a $5-10 licencing fee. Why on earth wouldn't anyone want this?

Hold your ground Sony. I do recalled Sony asking for cross play last gen and MS said "F U Sony".
This is perhaps the most fanboy thing I've ever read on this forum, and it's been really bothering me ever since I first read it. It's quite troubling to me that anyone would ever say this. STICK TO YER GUNZ! STICK IT TO THA GAMERZ... I MEAN MAN!

Secondly, which ground should they hold, the original one where they said that they were open to it or the new one where they will not cooperate?

Are you guys who are against this idea, telling me that you were also against it when Sony was open to it? I believe that's about all they said anyway. Anyway, would you still be against it if Sony changed their mind again?

I just wish some would be more consistent

Nobody should be defending Sony when they are so obviously in the wrong and those people would be attacking MS if the situation was reversed

And at the same time I didn't see much anger here when Sony was doing cross platform play and MS wasn't

Agreed.

I was always hoping Microsoft would change their mind, and they did. Doing a search, I can't find where Sony came right out and said that they were supporting cross-play either. They seemed to be mostly silent about doing console to console. Microsoft was against it because of quality control. Keep in mind that PSN was a free lesser-quality service back then than it is now. The landscape is totally different now. I didn't realize that some games were actually capable back then, but there are MANY possible games now, with compatible code in place. Can someone find a link saying that Sony was actually trying to make this work before...even though it's not like this really matters now, does it? Is so much rather talk about now instead of 8-10 years ago.

I'm not defending anything myself, I just see why they don't do it. I'm not for or against it, it wouldn't make much of a difference to me because I hardly know anyone who still games on Xbox anyway and when I do play MP I never have a hard time finding games full of people on PS4.

I wasn't talking about Sony offering up cross platform play I am talking about MS starting this whole closed off paid service, back in the day everything seemed to be handled by the developer/publisher.

I'm not against what you want I just don't see it as a big deal either, if I only played MP games and didn't have many friends who owned the console I did it would probably be a bigger deal to me, then again I don't play Minecraft, Fortnite and haven't played rocket league in months and as far as I'm aware those are the only games MS has said they'd do it with.

As far as the licensing fee for the other games yeah I would love that too but I would never expect it, that means the publisher is losing a ton of money, that fee wouldn't even cover what MS/Sony take as a royalty. With game development costs skyrocketing the last thing I'd want is to start pushing for things that we have never had before that will ultimately contribute to putting companies out of business.

For the record I am talking about them doing cross platform play on PC when MS wouldn't even do that

I wouldn't expect it either. Still, from everything I've just read, the royalty MS and Sony take from a $60 game is about $7. Let's say the extra premium for a dual license could be $10 or even $15. That's the $7 royalty plus $3-8 extra on top of the full purchase of the game. That covers the extra development, I think. How many people own two complete versions of these games? I'm not sure how a company could go broke from this. I see it as actually extra money that they would not have.

Edit: actually, the rights logistics alone would be a nightmare to do this. What would keep one from selling one of the copies? How do you tie the two accounts together to stop this? It's too bad.

Yeah any offer like that would be taken advantage of and exploited in every way possible and the costs outside of just the MS/Sony royalty would just add up to too much.

Did anybody forget that Sony had a breach on their network last gen.

You really blame MS not to cross play with them.

FFXI is the only game to do so and also had a different setup just to play cross platform which it was good.

This time Sony just being an ass. MS still have the better online network and now that Phil is making sure that cross play is a thing SONY will be left behind.
