Super Lucky's Tale review: A cutesy Xbox adventure held back by silly issues
https://www.windowscentral.com/super-luckys-tale-review

Conclusion:

Despite its problems, Super Lucky's Tale is more than the sum of its parts. One important factor to consider when gaming is how a title makes you feel when you pick up the controller and engage with it. This is just as important — if not more — than its story and technical aspects. In some scenarios, a simple "pick up and play" experience can bring you more joy than a gritty "AAA" blockbuster.

Super Lucky's Tale guarantees a smile.

Super Lucky's Tale is one such experience — you can't help but smile as you play. Its adorable nature, strange characters, and quirky dialogues make you fall in love with the game even though the camera controls are a bit off. If you're looking for a title which is guaranteed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, then be sure to give this one a go.

PROS:

  • Gorgeous visuals.
  • Addictive gameplay.
  • Collectibles and secrets enhance replayability.
CONS:
  • Rigid camera controls.
  • Standard Xbox One version runs at 30 FPS and suffers from clunky movement.
  • Relatively short length.

Camera's only an issue if you expected full 3D movement but that's not what they went for.

A weird game to promote X.

MS is that desperate to show a colourful platformer? I guess anything to kind of combat Mario and have a family friendly game.

Cute graphics, average platforming levels I saw, and this game is supposedly based off an Oculus or Vive VR game which didn't even get great reviews to start with.

Console maker: "Hey everyone, we have a new system coming out and we want to show everyone what it can do. We have a great racing game to show off!"

Gamers: "What is it? Forza?"

Console maker: "Nope"

Gamers: "GT"

Console maker: "Nope"

Gamers: "PCars.... a new Ridge Racer..... maybe a new fast paced NFS?.... A new cart racing game based on an existing franchise?"

Console maker: "Nope. Better than all of that..... Test Drive"

It's only weird because they have ignored the market for too long, imo. Business-wise, I think it's dumb that nobody but Nintendo is going after the family-friendly market. I don't have kids, but I love me some Pixar movies and occasional Nintendo games. In fact, Nintendo seems to be the only console maker... no, developer to try to hold that market. I always thought somebody would come along and make a brand that stood out. It could even be a subset of another publisher. Just my 2¢.

Edit: I do realize that there are Disney games and Lego games. This isn't exactly what I mean. Disney isn't even the Disney of videogames. They were actually not all that good at it. The Lego games are ok, but yeah... Nobody has done anything close to Nintendo, basically. No branding like that.

Well it's not like MS never tried for the family or younger crowd but for some reason they just struggle to sell.

In fact oddly enough the most success they seem to have had has been with Kinect! Games like Kinect sports, Disneyland Adventure, Kinectimals, Dance Central and Star wars to name a few all sold well from 2M up to 8M (not included the bundled Kinect adventures).

But games like Viva Pinata? Struggled and took a long time to sell over 2m
Lips? They made 4 but no numbers ever got boasted.
I believe scene it was a success?

Plenty of others have been released but have failed to make a dent.

Their biggest is Minecraft and they bought that.

1 vs. 100 was huge with families.

Man, every time I consider this game, I watch some footage and am immediately turned off. I can't stand the art direction and stock generic look to everything. I reminds me of every amateur "animated" character I've ever seen....

Love this game. If you enjoy Mario and Sonic type games along with puzzles then you will like this game especially for the $14.99 that I got it for.

It's addicting and I keep wanting to do level after level.

Good to hear. I've enjoyed it a lot as well.

Just wish you could retry things without having to exit the level and then re enter

It looks like an iPhone game in 4k. But it sounds like it could be fun.

For real. It's an underappreciated and untapped market. Microsoft and Sony were headed in the right direction last gen with Banjo, Ratchet, etc but they seem to have given up on trying to compete with Nintendo in that space. I mean, Sony has Dreams coming eventually but i figured they'd have something else after Ratchet and LittleBigPlanet were put to rest.

Looking forward to playing Super Lucky's Tale myself whenever i get a chance. Don't mind that it's generic looking, for $20 or less it looks like fun to me. Just wish Microsoft would see the true potential there given they have a studio like Rare who has proven they can knock these games out of the park.

I bought this game during the Black Friday sale. It’s as generic as you thought it was. Nothing compelling about the art style. That’s the real weakness of the game. The gameplay is decent. Like the bright colors. Nice change of pace. Wish there was more of these.

If they used this same gameplay and game engine with a free roam camera and more interesting art, there’s potential for a series here.

Played for another hour and a half last night. Enjoying it for sure. Some of it sure can be challenging and frustrating, but then again, it is a game. It surely has replay value in it if you want to go back and get everything after you complete it. I am about 33% of the way through.

I haven’t got to the challenging stuff yet. To me, doing that right is what makes or breaks a platformer. Is it challenging because it’s cheap, the camera is an issue and controls aren’t precise...or does it seem like it’s a challenge because it tests your reflexes and decision making?

The challenge is more about the reflexes and decision making. The camera is annoying, but the controls work great for me.

Only had a couple moments in which I thought camera control would have been better but for most of the game the camera is fine.

No problem with the controls either. Would give the game a solid 6/10

I have struggled a couple times on the 2D side scrolling levels where you actually press the right trigger to drop down a hole so that you are playing in the background, and I kept getting killed by spikes the flip on platforms while being bombarded by bees.

Finished the main story. End boss was a bit of a b**** In the 3rd phase but just needed timing.

I'll come back to this later to 100% the game.

Game isn’t that bad. Probably would rate it a 6.5-7.0 but that’s due to the generic style and limited camera. This is another franchise, much like Recore, Ryse and most of the new franchises MS has put out this gen that has unrealized potential. There is the bones of a decent franchise here that just needs a bit more time marinating.

Well the ending hints at what a sequel would be so hopefully they get to make it.

I will say this game is a nice change of pace to rotate in after Evil Within and Wolfenstein 2. I'd buy the sequels if they continue to sell them at bargain pricing.
