Can someone summarise what the big deal is the players kneeling? Is kneeling somehow showing a lack of respect when compared to standing?

It's all a matter of point of view right now.

For one segment of the country, kneeling is seen as disrespecting the flag (and by extension the soldiers who fought and fight for the country). Because traditionally you'd stand.

For others, it's simply protesting something about America that you believe is wrong and want to change. It has nothing to do with disrespecting the flag, soldiers, or country.

I fall squarely into the latter group, as do a huge number of soldiers and vets. The country is founded on the idea of protest.

I oversimplified, but there you go.

The people who fought, and fight, for our country fight for the people and the constitution. Anybody who wants repercussions for what they are doing, wants them to stop, etc., hate the constitution, and many, I'll take an educated guess, are firmly behind the second amendment making them extreme hypocrites.

Ok cool. I find the whole thing odd. Kneeling is generally considered a form of humility in Europe.

Pretty legit criticism of the NFL and some of the players who took a knee

I can't stand Skip Bayless and I rarely find Shannon Sharpe to be worth listening to, but I am glad this time I gave it a chance. Nice find.

Here, too. Kneeling is a sign of veneration or respect. You kneel in prayer, for instance. Or if you're old school, when proposing.

As Costas pointed out, he initially sat down, but he realized that sitting could be seen as contemptuous. That wasn't the message he wanted to send, so he chose to kneel instead. His action then becomes a protest (because he's not standing as he's supposed to), but a respectful protest.

Kneeling is showing respect for the people who fought, fight, and died protecting his right to protest.

"America's team" as a whole. This is now beyond what Kaepernick was kneeling for. It is now about black lives lost to police killings, support for that cause, standing up against an unfit person in office, and support for your fellow teammates being attacked. Maybe trump will make America great again, just not in the way he promised his racist base? Maybe he will cause so many people to hate him, his family, his appointees, his failed policies, and people will be united? We know his unwavering racist base will never leave him, but maybe the rest of us will all join arms together and become how we were after WW1, WW2, and the 9/11 attacks? Maybe I'm just dreaming, but how we were after 9/11, as one nation, was the best I ever saw my country. I wish to feel like that again.

I've talked a lot of s*** about 'on the court' Lebron. I've always said he's a good guy off the court. He's making a big statement now as he's grown into a mature man. I'm glad he is. I'm very happy that he's speaking out. He's the big dawg and his words will go further than most.

I can't fathom the composure the press in that room must have every day when they know they're being lied to and intellectual dishonesty is abound.
