The Xbox Onesie

For gaming probably not outside of voice commands, head tilting, etc. Maybe it can be used with some VR stuff down the road. Should be well worth it for the entertainment stuff though.

To me, the best thing Kinect can bring to the table is if devs make use of the cam and let gamers digitize their face or body or animations into the game.... sports games etc....

I believe Project Spark allows this of some kind s they demoed it can capture your body movement as animation.

Now that every X1 gamer has it, devs know the potential is out there for usage. Even if the digitizing and mapping of a face scan isn't that great at least give the option. I remember importing a jpeg face onto an old NHL 1999 or NHL 2000 game on PC and it was hilarious.

I'm not sure how good the quality was, but supposedly even those old R6 games on 360 let you import a face onto a character model I think (never played them).
Yea you could use the cam (whatever it was called) but it looked pretty damn hilarious.

anyone remember this Kinect vid?

skip to 2mins with the kid scans the skateboard, girl tries clothes on and family plays a game show type game. This is what will sell it to the casuals.

Combination with VR sounds viable, Oculus Rift has been doing exactly that.

I always wanted that monster game to be made, but it was canned for some reason. Thought it was awesome. Would make for a great addition to any party game. Speaking of party, I'm still super excited for Kinect Sports Rivals. Hot damn, might take some tax money and get me an X1 with stuff like Titanfall and KSR coming out. Trying to stay strong and not spend so much this year, but it's tough man. Especially when you have the money. No money = sad, but trying to save money = temptation everywhere.

Ok,first and foremost listen what this Worthplaying editorial has to say:

http://worthplaying.com/article/2014/3/1/editorials/91522/

Y'know,my mind wanders back to E3 2002. By then it was very clear that PS2 had won the console race BUT the :xbox: had a series of positive things in its favor that could highlight the console's superior hardware and could expand the Xbox brand (which at the time many were still doubious of). Now it seems that things are in a reverse mirror. XB1 has just way too many negatives stacked agaisnt it. And the damn Kinect seems to be the eye of that sh1tstorm. And you have to beat that dead horse again and ask: Is the damn WORTH IT?

I hope that when all is said and done and the chips are down I hope and pray that the whole Xbox brand -whose cause I fought for with tooth and nail- isn't brought down by an stupid peripheral,
It's just one person's opinion, we don't care about him.
(you know opinions is like a**holes, everybody got one) :-)

the obvious answer is, yes. Some games really are better with kinect.

Seemed more petty than that.. "Well you asked for it! REMOVING EVERYTHING COOL!"

If they made it work offline it would have appeased the complainers, made those looking forward to the new features they removed happy, and made them look a little less "weak" since they were being bashed unrelentingly.

Relative to the complete 180 which... gave into the complainers who then turned around and made fun of the 180... totally removed features some consumers were actually looking forward too, and made them look reactionary and weak.

Holy hell, did I just agree with you.

That was my problem with the announcements and reversals as well. Microsoft as a whole has always stood their ground or at least changed later. But they just threw up their hands and were like, FCK IT, BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.

I hope Jackie / the forum drops this ridiculous "play without your disk without any DRM" discussion.

Completely pointless waste of time.. couldn't be more obvious why.. and yes, Jackie, it's because you can't trust consumers.

Having said that.. Why MS didn't make "always online" just something optional blows my mind.

- If I'm online, I get to not use my disks
- If I don't bring my console online for 24 hours, I have to use a disk to play
- If I'm online, my friends can share my games
- If I'm offline I can't play my friends shared games, and if my friend goes offline for more than 24 hours his library is unshared.

They can adjust the "24 hours" to something smaller or larger to balance out convenience/DRM level.

I really think MS's total 180 was not smart.

I thought of that, but then thought it would allow 2 people to play the game. If the online person doesn't need it for 24 hours then another person can play it offline. Which is what the DRM is trying to stop, right ?

I stopped reading here, "The Xbox One isn't having the most successful of launches." The xbox one is the most successful launch for any xbox.

Kinect Sports Rivals is coming out in April and looks to be rather fun, judging by Preseason. Maybe at E3 they will announce some titles, cause they recently got a new first party studio for Kinect. We will have to wait and see.

the answer is the first 3 words in the topic...

only idiots actually believe the first statement in the article referenced...

After that there's no point in discussion...

I don't think the gaming aspect has even truly begun. On X1 we really don't have any games that use Kinect in a big game changing way. I don't believe that's because it can't been done, I think it's just yet to be done. We'll have to wait and see. Some dev is bound to come along and shake things up.

However, the idea of removing the Kinect from being bundled with the console is far from a good one. By leaving it s part of the console, developers can count on it being there, giving it a guaranteed install base and thus avoiding a big hurdle that the original Kinect encountered. If the install base is anything less than 100%, it means that any developer has to make a gamble in using the Kinect. With a guaranteed install base, developers can at least know that the gameplay isn't going to be relegated to a niche segment of the platform.

I disagree with this paragraph, I think they are overstating how important it is to include it with every platform. 1.) Just because it is included, doesn't mean people are going to use it or care about it. 2.) The PS4, Wii U, PC, 360, and PS3 don't include a Kinect 2.0, so most, if not all, multiplatform games are going to be designed without the Kinect in mind anyways.

What Microsoft needs to do now is deliver on the Kinect's potential, rather than leaving it as an anchor on a console that already has enough issues gaining momentum.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. I believe that a great core Kinect game could be made, but neither Microsoft nor any third party has been able to do this yet in the first 3 years of the device's existence. How much longer is this going to take? I feel that most of the Kinect games released thus far have highlighted the limitations of the Kinect rather than the strengths.

Dance, party, and exercise games may appeal to a limited audience, but Microsoft is going to have to go beyond that with their Kinect games if they ever want to prove the potential of the Kinect to a vast audience.

and that is the problem with most of the gaming crowd.

no one sees its potential, and reject it due to that.

After 3 years, neither first nor third party developers have yet to see or realize its potential either. How much longer is it going to take?

well depends on if you want to be pretentious and claim that the only good games for Kinect will be CORE games, or AAA titles, as I don't believe that will be the core success of the unit. Kinect options in AAA games COULD add cool functionality, but that was never seen on Kinect 1.0. Personally, my Kinect 1.0 got a s***load of playing time from me and the kids on the 360 with the titles. Yes, a trace of lag, but nothing that made it unplayable. We had story book titles, the sports, party games... all much fun and the camera worked great.

Kinect 2.0 is a different beast. Accurate, low light capable, advanced in many way to Kinect 1.0. It is also only a few months into release, yet that doesn't stop dumbs*** topics like this from popping up. We get it, people don't like the kinect. Fine, shut up about it already and let those of us that DO use it, see what devs can do, rather than rally trying to get MS to drop it completely from the SKU, thus eliminating dev's desire to actually work with it.

The camera isn't going anywhere. I wish gamers would give MS and their devs a chance to flesh this thing out. FFS...

Good catch! Was really confused when reading that part too... But aside from the obvious shortcomings of the article - there is definitely cause for concern.
Kinect IS a huge bet. That 75$ invested in better hardware (GPU, CPU, RAM) would have lead to a reversed situation with X1 > PS4.
A lot of hardcore gamers have no interest in Kinect whatsoever - some people hate it to such a nonrational extent that they would prefer not using it altogether even if it came for free.
That's one of the reasons why the PS4 enjoys unbroken popularity without actually offering something worthwhile itself.
One thing that the article forgets however is that all the non-gaming Kinect-functionality could be very tempting for a different kind of demography but not at this price-point.
MS has only itself to blame. To launch without a Kinect gaming killer-app after all the uproar from last generation is just suicide.
I really hope they turn things around beginning with GDC.

Why would they invest so heavily in a Kinect game this gen to start with? No way. There were so many people just waiting for Microsoft to tout Kinect 2.0 games, just so they could rip em a new ass for doing it. EVERYONE was saying MS should stay away from Kinect games at the beginning, and they responded by marketing Kinect as the "third button" if you remember. No way would I change a thing that theyve done thusfar.

You completely failed to answer my question and instead chose to tell me to shut up and call me pretentious. Why are you getting so defensive? This is a forum and the Kinect is a fairly controversial topic, don't tell me to shut up, I can argue for my point of view to my hearts content, just like you are allowed to as well. If you don't like it and can't be civil, than simply don't click on these threads.

I'm sorry for being 'pretentious', but Dance, Party, and Exercise games only appeal to a relatively small crowd, which comes nowhere close to making up the majority of console owners. So yes, some type of a 'core' game (ie: RPG, FPS, TPS, Action, Football, Basketball, etc) will need to come out to prove that the Kinect can appeal beyond a certain crowd.

Ryse was supposed to be that game, but Microsoft mysteriously dropped the Kinect support (excluding some voice support that felt very forced) and chose to make it a controller based game instead. I wonder why, given all the motivation Microsoft would have to release a 'core' Kinect launch game, they would do this?

And I agree that the Kinect COULD add cool functionality to AAA games. The problem is, it hasn't really beyond some basic gimmicks that aren't widely beneficial or accepted.

And I agree that a cool 'core' Kinect game could be made. The problem is, one hasn't yet. And the attempts at making one thus far (Steel Battalion) have shown off its limitations more than its strengths. How much longer are we going to wait?

You are bashing gamers for not seeing the 'potential' of the Kinect, but the problem is developers at both Microsoft and third party studios have yet to see or realize the full potential in their games either. These studios, especially Microsoft's internal ones, have had development kits for the Kinect 1.0 for likely over 4 years and for the Kinect 2.0 for 18 months now, when are we going to see something?

Not really. Sony having a good month does not prove that X1 is in trouble or that gamers hate Kinect. Just because people keep posting the same click-bait articles doesn't make it accurate.
Precisely. And we're only four months or so into this gen. Wish some would get off the topic already. Its is clearly a dead horse discussion. And again, can you imagine if Microsoft were to drop Kinect now? It would be disastrous! If they looked weak when doing the 180 on the DRM, they'd look even worse for un-bundling Kinect at this point. It'd be a dagger to the heart and probably end the Xbox brand.

People complain saying they need to remove Kinect, but then if they did a lot (not all) of the same people would be all over MS for dropping it saying they're giving up or they lost.

With that said, a few years down the line, I could see it dropped.

Maybe some people dont remember that the XBO wouldnt start without Kinect to begin with. Then Microsoft changed that and made it "optional" by allowing the console to function without it. Thats about as close to "dropping" Kinect as its going to get. If MS were going to unbundle Kinect, they would have done so before the console launched. It simply doesnt make sense to do so now.....their committed.
