Vampyr is set in set in an early 20th century Britain, which is thrown into chaos by a lethal Spanish Flu, and vampires that haunt the streets at night. Player will take on the role of Jonathan E. Reid, a military surgeon that becomes a vampire when he returns home from the war.

During the game, players will explore London, accept missions, and eventually have to decide who they'll feed on.

"Absolutely all characters in the game are potential victims of your vampiric lust," the developer said in a release. "Carefully study the habits of your next victim, his or her relationships with other characters, and set up your strategy to feed, unnoticed: seduce them, change their daily habits, or make sure they end up alone in a dark street."

Vampyr's combat includes, melee, shooting mechanics, and supernatural vampire abilities that'll help you take on different species of vampire creatures as well as vampire hunters. Player will also be able to create their own weapons using a deep crafting system and materials looted from defeated enemies.

Vampyr will be published by Focus Home Interactive in 2017.

Hm. Maybe. 2017 is a long ways off, so we've got time to learn more.

On the negative side, it's a story about vampires, not my favorite subject. On the plus, I've enjoyed Dontnod's work on Life is Strange, so I have some respect for them as a studio.

The voice actor is trying to sound like Hannibal Lecter. Clarice - have the lambs stopped screaming? lol

This one is probably worth keeping an eye on, if you like short, focused RPGs with well-written characters, a strong sense of place, and a good story. It's the next game from Dontnod, who are just coming off the success of Life is Strange, which followed the not-so-success of Remember Me.

It's a mostly-linear RPG with interconnected areas sprouting off a main area. They don't have the resources to do an open world, and they prefer games with strong narratives, which a more linear format lends itself to. They are talking about a game that yields "at least 15 hours" of playtime, so this is on the short end for RPGs (which is fine with me, personally -- I don't have the time for 200-hour epics anymore).

The game takes place in 1918, in London. You are a doctor who contracts vampirism. You need blood to survive, but as a doctor, you are still trying to save lives. You can kill everyone you come into contact with and grow stronger, but that will of course affect the outcome of the game. You can try not to kill anyone, but that will be difficult. The game is designed so that there is a need to kill but a moral struggle over doing it, so the decisions you make about who to kill and who not to kill are difficult, and they affect the way the story unfolds.

The weakest area appears to be the combat, which is described by one the previews as lackluster (the other says they didn't see enough to really gauge it), but they've got some time to work on it, so hopefully, it will improve. However, I'm guessing just based on what I know of Dontnod that they will focus more on story, character, and setting than on combat.

The game is due out in 2017.

Here are some excerpts from previews. More at the links.

"The stage is London, 1918, a disease is ripping through a city struggling to cover its own maintenance costs following the end of World War I. The lead is Jonathan Reid, a war veteran recently and forcibly converted to vampirism. As far as the overarching narrative is concerned, it’s Reid’s mind that takes centre stage as he struggles to remain the honourable man he saw himself as prior to his transformation while having to somehow satisfy his new need to consume blood."

"In line with the narrative and setting, dark colours and especially brown tones dominate the visual finish. In one mission early in the game we are looking for a mysterious nurse in Whitechapel who is apparently blackmailing a fellow vampire. It's fairly quiet and the atmosphere is tense and oppressive. Throughout the game a filter with visible grain is used to contribute to this gloomy mood. The world of Vampyr appears founded in realism, in spite of some fantasy ingredients.

Did you kids ever play Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines? Oh my god that game was soooooooo good.

Buggy as all get up, but Id love to see Bethesda get a chance to make a gritty R rated version of it.

Sounds awesome to me. Thanks for pointing this one out, I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

Looks poor to me, especially the combat. I dont expect much from these dudes after Lis

They did Remember Me, before LiS. I'm not sure how the combat was in that game. But yeah, combat could be a potential weakness.

s*** keep forgetting about it, but kind of glad it's delayed. Might have a new PC built by then as well.

It'll need to sell a half a million to turn a profit, a million to be considered a success:

Action RPG Vampyr Won't Have DLC, But Needs to Sell One Million
Focus Home lays out expectations for title

“From our investment, it will be considered a success when around a million copies are sold, but it will only need half of that to be profitable,” he said. “These are numbers we now reach and exceed regularly with most our games. Vampyr benefits from strong recognition and expectations, which will only increase over the coming weeks. It has everything it needs to become a nice surprise on the market.”

I will, too. All they need to do is say "from the guys who brought you Life is Strange," and they'll get half a million, at least.

Never actually played that game although heard good things. I have Remember Me from a Steam sale at one point but never got to it. I understand it wasn't that great but paid less than $5 for it so meh.

You haven't played LiS? Oh, well do that.

I never tried Remember Me.

Remember me had alot of good ideas in it. The Devs just kinda flubbed the execution.

Well, hopefully they're more experienced now. Although you could argue that some of LiS was flubbed (overdone), too.

I give Dontnod credit for trying a lot of new things, even if some of it doesn't work. They do a really good job with characters, atmosphere, and story.

I look forward to seeing what they do with Vampyr.

A 15-hour, linear RPG. That sounds pretty interesting.

I'm kinda interested but I don't know if I'm Day one purchase interested. On the other hand, I do want to support devs that do single player games with no dlc strings attached. Might just bite the bullet and see.
