Who's upgrading their PS4 harddrive right away?

PS4 confirmed to ship with easily replaceable 2.5-inch hard drive

Why even bother with an external drive? Just upgrade it down the road. Who wants both a wired camera and a wired external drive hanging off their console?

Can you upgrade the X1's hard drive?
Going by that article, I'd rather wait it out and use external HDDs via the USB 3.0 ports. Why muck around with actually swapping the drives from the console when you can just attach a USB enabled HDD to the system. Less work, less chance of screwing up and if you ever want to use a file not on the current console HDD, a USB hook up is easier than reopening the console, swapping drives and then rescrewing the hatch back up.

What if you have two sets of files you want to use.

Scenario 1:
File 1 on internal drive 1
File 2 on internal drive 2

Scenario 2:
File 1 on internal drive 1
File 2 on USB hook up external drive

Scenario 2 is the better choice. You can access them at the same time. The first option you have to get out the screwdriver and manually swap internal drives. No different than PCs. Anyone who has their HDD reaching the limit can go either the motherboard HDD route, or they buy an external drive. I bet most go external.

Don't forget power brick. Seriously though, being able to swap drives is infinitely better than an external HDD option.

Why is that?

I have an external 320 gb HDD hooked up to my laptop via USB cord. Whether I have a desktop or a laptop, why would messing around with the innards of the system be better than just attaching (or unattaching) an external HHD? Not only does it take 1 second to do, but it's also mobile and I can take it and use it on any other PC.

Also, as per both Sony and MS, external HDDs aren't even for game installs anyway. Not allowed.

I think you just answered your own question.

Thanks for the article. Increasing the space from 9.5MM to 12.5MM is nice so one doesn't have to worry about it fitting.

there is NO mandatory installs ON THE PS4. if you wanna install the game you can
its an option. i might get a 1tb hard drive but for now 500 gigs is plenty i dont down load music or moives. 7200 rpm will run to hot stick with 5400 rpm
can we use that Seagate Solid State Hybrid in the PS4 it dont get hot like a reg harddrive this would be awesome

You're really going to get out the screwdriver and swap drives every time you play a game, where one game is on internal HDD 1 and the other is on internal HDD 2? LOL
No, I'll just get a larger HDD and use that alone. No reason for a second HDD at all.

They are allowed on X1, just not supported at launch.

I'd be hesitant to use anything non-Sony brand unless Sony says it's alright. Its caused some issues with PS3 updates in the past.

But Sony isn't a HDD manufacturer, they simply purchase from other manufacturers like Seagate, Samsung, Western Gate, Toshiba, etc and put the Sony logo on them.

I understand that, I was just really never one for 3rd-party accessories. When you grab a console-maker branded item, you know for sure it'll work. It's just a personal preference.

The 60gb drive in my PS3 has been good enough, I don't think I'll need to upgrade a 500gb drive either.

Apparently , for those who want to upgrade, especially those going DD only, the process is simpler than the phat ps3's. There are pictures floating on the web that show the replacement process step-by-step. Here's one of them (the screw you'll pull out)

I'm thinking the same thing. I'm a bit surprised that a 60GB drive was all you needed, though. I bought my fair share of DLC games, but between that and installs, I'm glad I got a console with a 320GB HDD.

The slot in PS4 allows 2.5" drives up to 12.5mm height, according to computerbild who did measurements on a PS4-debug unit this week.

I was not talking about a PS4, I was talking about a PS3, I read in the past that the bigger capacity drives are a bit thicker and thus will not fit in the tray that holds the standard 2.5" drive. maybe the newer drives are the exact same dimensions as the ones in the past. I would hate to buy a 1TB drive and find out that it won't fit in my PS3's HD tray.

SSD or bust. 1 TB SSD from Samsung is only $599 now, a dramatic price reduction from last years $1000+

Not true at all.

You realize that 60gb HDD would only be good for one game this gen right?

killzone 40 gb, COD 50 gb. If you want to go digital youre gonna have to go really big.

As far as we know, disks will also be mandatory full installs on both next gen consoles. Digital or not, you will be managing disk space often.

I am getting my PS4 on day one and within the next few days thereafter, I will upgrade the hard drive.

I'll be upgrading my PS4 with a 1TB SSHD upon purchase, unfortunately the PS4's are sold out until 2014 in AU and I'm on that waiting list. :(

PS4 will sell gangbusters!

First, I'm jealous of you guys that are putting SSDs in your PS4. Personally, though, I'm going to wait and see how quickly space becomes an issue. I'm a digital pack rat, so I'm using 700gb+ (of 1TB) on my PS3 (with PS+ its especially easy). I swapped out my PS3 HDD 3 times and hated it each time, so if I swap the PS4 drive, it's going to be some time in the future when I can get a 3TB 2.5-inch somewhat reasonably.

People will eventually upgrade so might as well get it over with.
