Will the Xbox One go down as the greatest console of all time?

But did those articles say the Xb1 wouldn't sell well?
"Who was it aimed at" isn't doom and gloom. It's a cry from certain gamers saying the XB1 was geared towards a different crowd. That doesn't spell doom and gloom for it. Doom and gloom is a gross over exaggeration.

More or less, yes they did. They were strongly suggesting superior sales for one over the other. I think you're nit picking a bit here. There was certainly an element of doom and gloom (maybe a little exaggerated by the media but not grossly so), especially immediately after E3. But MS got on top of that very fast, like I said.

And isn't the PS4 selling better?

One selling more than the other is not doom and gloom.

It is a gross exaggeration, and that's why I said some people are being drama queens. But the over exaggeration is par for the course. It's like people saying PS3 was a fiasco even though it sold at a fast pace at a higher price point, end the generation with more people playing BF4 on PS3 than on 360, and for the past few years, saw almost as much in sales for the most played game as on 360, with quite often, more actually playing online. Oh...the doom and gloom.

Meanwhile, in the real world, for months now, most people outside of a very few, where all in agreement, that the XB1 would sell well enough.

You know what I meant. There are plenty of reactionary media articles from the last 6 months basically saying that the X1 would be hammered by the PS4. Between that, and all the noise generated in places like GAF, there was certainly an air of doom and gloom. Was it exaggerated? Yes. Was it groundless given MS has just a massive base for xbox? Yes it was. X1 was bound to sell well. And PS4 was always going to sell more. That's not my point. My point is there was doom and gloom, exaggerated or not. Anyway, that's just my take on it.

I think we both have two different ideas of what doom and gloom are.

Not much different from those claiming the abundance of waffling when the tables turned on minor differences in multiplats mattering or not...yeah a few extremists did but overall nobody really cared about the 360/PS3 differences nor do they care about the X1/PS4 differences. ;)

True enough.

I saw nothing but doom and gloom for the X1. It was endless.

Just to add my $.25 (sorry, only had a quarter), I think even after the policy changes there were tons of people (maybe not on this site specifically) giving the X1 a very hard time. It did seem media outlets were much more critical of the X1 and some sites were definitely even posting negative MS/X1 articles just to get hits. Now is this "Doom and Gloom"? Depends who you're talking to. The phrase "Doom and Gloom" is already hyperbole in and of itself, so it's hard to make a fair judgement on what is and what isn't "Doom and Gloom".

Exactly. No one is denying that people were talking smack about XB1. There were plenty of people hating on it.

Doom and gloom? Nahhhh. Outside of a very small group of people, no one was actually saying that XB1 wouldn't sell well. If anything, most agreed that it would sell out. Doom and gloom rampant on the internet is an exagration. The same way as some xbots exagerate by saying the PS3 was a fiasco. Like I said, X1 preorders sold out months before launch. It sold out back in july, and the XB1 reveal was like in may. This claim that there was rampant doom and gloom up until release is unfounded.

Crap statement abound.

You honestly dont remember the s*** storm comments about Microsoft keeping the Kinect included and how no one would buy it because no one cared about Kinect? Or how about The Xbox One was going to fail because they (Microsoft) were being so arrogant with the price, and if you want to play current 360 games, you had to buy a 360? And lets not forget when word about Sony hardware went viral and those horrible rumor based articles about how weak the X1 hardware was compared to the Ps4. The more good news about Sony that sprang up, the worst things got for the X1.

It all started when Microsoft presented the Xbox One as an entertainment console. Hell yes!, there were those who believed it wouldnt sell! It wasnt until the games began to be shown and Microsoft revealed information about pre-orders when some of the "bad news for Xbox" began to die down.

But then it was Kinect. NO ONE WANTED KINECT! And we heard countless times that "NO ONE WOULD BUY THE XBOX IF KINECT WAS INCLUDED!" You may not remember, but I do. And I certainly call much of what we heard "doom and gloom". " NO ONE WILL PAY AN EXTRA $100 FOR A DEVICE THAT WAS A GIMMICK TO BEGIN WITH!" "DROP THE KINECT AND LOWER THE PRICE!, MICROSOFT!" It was every where....

And we honestly shouldnt compare the X1 to the Ps3. The PS3 sold no where near as many as the X1 in such a short time frame. Not to mention the Xbox One is $100 cheaper included much more value and plenty of other features. Yeah. Not even in the same league.

That would be Sony's wet dream!

IN OTHER NEWS.....

The point was merely that there were those who declared the Xbox One wouldnt sell, in which case you stated no one said that.

sh!t storm comments about no one going to buy XB1 because of Kinect? lol.

Again, in the real world, fairly soon after the XB1 was officially announced, pre-orders sold out. A handful of people claiming XB1 would not sell is a far cry from rampant on the internent cries about how XB1 wouldn't sell.

But hey, in you care to list these rampant claims that XB1 wouldn't sell......please, show it to me. And I don't mean your oddball post of some obscure person, I mean, this widespread "rampant" claim that it would not sell.
Especially interesting to see are these claims that it would not sell....even up until launch.

I'll wait.

I dont have to and you know it. It was much more than a handful of people. It simply came down to all the things that Microsoft was doing wrong (as many liked to suggest), which in turn would effect how the console would sell, and many were on the hate train. It wasnt so much the Xbox One as it was the Kinect being mandatory, higher price and weaker hardware. Sony capitalized on Microsofts' PR blunder and exploited it. From there, Sony Fanboys, anonymous websites, popular websites and journalists, anonymous devs took over. The Xbox One was a dead console that no one wanted. And Kinect!, Oh god Kinect was the Achilles Heel! The cursed "Dagger through the heart".

..."The nail in the coffin".

Kinect was the reason for the additional $100 for the Xbox One. Kinect v1 sucked balls, and Kinect v2 would suck even more balls + no one wanted to pay an extra $ amount for a mandatory device that........well, allegedly, sucked balls when Microsoft "could've easily dropped the Kinect and dropped the price to compete with the "New Sony". And since Microsoft would NOT get rid of Kinect, they were being arrogant and their actions would bring about the legendary "3rd console curse". Hence, many refused to buy it and the Xbox One would be slaughtered by the new and improved Sony who had "won the hearts and minds of gamers once again". "THE KING HAS RETURNED!" Blah, blah, blah.....

"MICROSOFT IS NOW THE OLD SONY - SO ARROGANT. UBER FAIL!"
"WTF?!? MICROSOFT WENT BACKWARDS!? HOW DID THEY GET IT SO WRONG?!

...The hive mind was the disease throughout the industry. In fact, it was precisely why Albert, Major Nelson and the Xbox engineers began to get DIRECTLY involved with the gaming community on forums! You honestly dont remember?!

Meanwhile, Sony, according to other websites, were reportedly doing everything right for the gamers by offering a much more powerful (I believe 50% more was the actual number) console, came in at a whole $100 cheaper, took pages from Microsofts book and became much more dev friendly, recreated the DS controller, was all about the indies, created a Kinect-ish camera (not to mention cheaper than the Kinect) that wasnt mandatory and would be sold separately and yadda, yadda, yadda! Again, it wasnt so much the Xbox One console as it was everything else attached to it. "MICROSOFT LOST TOUCH WITH THE GAMERS BECAUSE OF TV, TV, TV!"

"CERNY, CERNY, CERNY!!" Oh. I remember....

There are numerous websites as we speak where many forum dwellers are actually shocked the Xbox One is as successful as it is. Do your own search. Im not doing it for you as my memory is doing just fine for me. Im not attempting to convince you but I remember the whole charade and smear campaign that came against the Xbox One. And so do you....

Granted, you are correct in stating that things began to change, but it certainly wasnt immediate after the reversal of the DRM. The change came after months and months of Microsoft PR bending over backwards, trying to get people not to believe the crap that was being strewed about.

No. I simply refuse to go on some redundant quest for proof that the Xbox One was going to be "the next Dreamcast" or "DOA". You do it. I'll wait....

You won't do it, because it wasn't as rampant as you suggest. Yes, there was widespread rampant complaints. No, there wasn't widespread rampant claims that XB1 wouldn't sell or that it was doomed. You're conflating 2 different arguments.

and I don't need to go on some insane quest for proof that XB1 wasn't going to be the next dreamcast.....as I never claimed that. derp.

Like I said, drama queens. Oh noes....people are complaining about XB1's direction....all is lost, doom and gloom, XB1 is a failure and won't sell. bwhahahahahahahahahahaha

Just like a hater. lol. I deal with your type so often. No one believes in you until you actually prove them wrong. And when you do its always, "I never said that! I always knew you would do it!". So Im not shocked how so many change their tunes now that the Xbox One is a success. I've dealt with it myself in my own career so I know what it looks like. LMFAO.

Im done Qbert mate. Have an awesome day by the way....:)

Bwahahaha.....yeah, like a hater. Oh noes, you deal with my "type" every day. So sorry to hear that. Typical, when things don't go your way, play the victim card.

For the record, I've always said BOTH XB1 and PS4 would sell out. NEVER did I say it would be a failure. I did say I was disappointed that they concentrated so much on kinect, and still do. Never did I say it would be a failure.

Reality "mate", try it some time.

Which is funny by the way, because you haven't proven anything yet.

Fact is, some of the xbots here claimed that it was rampant that people were saying that XB1 was doomed to fail and would not sell. I small vocal minority claiming nonsense is not rampant all over the internet. For crying out loud.....XB1 pre-orders sold out pretty quickly MONTHS before release. Need I keep repeating that? Most knew that XB1 would sell out.

No?

Whateves......

You need to read the post again you responded to earlier (the one where you insulted me and said my ignorance is a bit overwhelming). I specifically said "running the same code." Obviously developers will learn to optimize code and boost performance on both platforms with time.

I did read it - You mean this one where you effectively insulted everyone else here? ;) :

On a separate note, yes, the Xbox one can do 4K and also the Xbox 360 and WiiU can do 1080P, that doesn't mean you will ever see it, especially when the Xbox one is having trouble rendering ports even in native 1080P.

But the entire point is that rendering the same code at a certain native resolution versus another is a direct correlation to processing power, just as frame rate is. If you guys had some basic knowledge of computing or even had some experience with PC gaming we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Now it all becomes clear. This whole time we've argued power in the past you guys had absolutely no idea what you were talking about! I had a suspicion. What a complete waste of everyone's time.

To that end - since you've brought it up - please outline which "same code" are you referring to specifically?

- The game engine?
- The drivers?
- The OS? (and various performance patches and updates)?
- The specific GPU Card APIs?
- The graphics abstraction layer (DirectX, OpenGL, etc., if used)?

Anyone knowledgeable of software development and has a good understanding of these layers would know that there are multiple layers of code that all mesh and come together (ideally in the best performance possible) to yield the output (resolution and frame rates) of a specific game (or any software program for that matter). Additionally - anyone knowledgeable of these layers would also know that slight changes in any of these respective/core software components (i.e. "code") - could also yield potentially better, or worse, performance overall.

In regards to your statement - when you take all of the above into consideration as "code" - which it truly is - it's highly doubtful that any "PC" is running the exact "same code" code (other than setting up the exact same hardware/software configuration - i.e. consoles) due to the nearly infinite number of possible variations here. As you've noted - the cheap/easy route is to upgrade the hardware (most likely due to the fact that the development team has targeted a "general" base system that should - in theory run within expected resolution/frame rates/etc.).

With regards to consoles - again - as I noted before - it's a closed system - no hardware upgrade opportunities here - so the obvious area for improvement here are the various software components outlined above tailored specifically to the enclosed custom hardware to render the best possible output possible. We've yet to see a *fully optimized" game engine tailored to either platform/hardware configuration rendering at the best possible output ...

If you haven't learned by now

Rampant = A few people on forums you post on.
