2024 will bring more layoffs and closures than 2023

Just as concerned you could say but at a magnitude that is 10x in proportion considering 8% of Bungie is probably like a hundred or so people which is still pretty bad. With ATVI and MS, it is multiplied by 15+ times at 1900 so no surprise there's more being heard across the internet and it's blowing up even more. Plus a game that was in development for 6+ years has also been cancelled because of this and going by what feedback and devs are saying, it had some potential.
From what I am seeing is the game was in development hell after 6 years on an engine change and was still years out. Sounds like they would have been more in the red on the game.

Weren’t Bungie layoffs because of failure to meet sales numbers?

Still related to the acquisition because Bungie reportedly only made the cuts to stop Sony from taking over . The missed revenue endangered that possibility if Bungie underperformed a certain margin .

Sony still spent like 1.3 billion (?) for staff retention I believe.

We will never know now. Many games have been through development hell and later became successful at release like ff15, team fortress 2, Diablo 3, dead island, L.A. noire, fallout 3, Alan wake etc.

And some get the can after layoffs and development hell, like Factions 2.

Yeah, I guess, still sucks. They have to such things…but I guess that would push Sony to make Bungie games exclusive. Which I wouldn’t be surprised if their next titles after marathon is exclusive to ps6 and ps5

And according to the leaked documents Sony has been pushing for layoffs across all first party teams. I think there’s been tweets of people who’ve already let go, but not many at a time to take notice.

Yes Sony PS studios started their layoffs in fall last year. But it was not all at once.

I think live service games will still be multiplatform and perhaps they may go the MS way of making new narrative IPs console exclusive.

@karmakid according to Schreier , Ybarra said somebody will drag him out of Blizzard otherwise he is staying

Hmmm, well one would assume you wouldn’t want any negative press at your own company exhibition.

Some reports say he threw shade at Xbox, even though he publicly left on good terms and both he and Xbox pr wished each other the best.

Only he and probably a select few know what really went down and how. He seems ok with it, my guess is he left cos he probably wouldn’t be able to go any higher in rank and choose the money?

The people who are blaming the acquisitions for the layoffs are children. Literally. They aren't involved in the economy in a meaningful way and are ignorant of how businesses are doing. To be fair, redundant positions do get eliminated after acquisitions, but not to this extent.

10% to 20% workforce reductions have been happening across nearly all industries since last year. It is a reaction to the state of the economy.

Weren’t there reports that the initial rounds of layoffs because of fear of a recession and other doom and gloom reports?

I assume the other 92% of the Xbox division that wasn't laid off will absorb those duties?

Sounded more like an off the record convo they had than any official interview.

My guess is Xbox wanted to put someone in MS in charge instead to take his place. That's usually how it works.

Pretty much. They would have had too many people doing the same job.
Usually after a acquisition a company sees around 37% work force layoffs.
8% from yesterday's news.

Yes. However, the doom and gloom is real. Inflation increasing the cost of living, high interest rates (ticked down a bit only recently), over hiring immediately post-pandemic, elimination of remote work (this is a factor to a lesser extent), and geopolitical discord, are some of the factors contributing to the downsizing.

Companies are tightening their belts, increasing workload for the remaining employees (going back to the model of 80% of the workforce doing 100% of the work).

However, this is all cyclical, as I previously mentioned. It's happened before, and it'll happen again. Like I said, anyone surprised by this are children or work in marketing/PR and have no idea how the business functions.

Even off the record you know a member of the press wouldn’t hold such a conversation confidential, unless he gave you his word or signed like an nda.

I think he couldn’t go up any higher with all the execs shuffling about, with Sarah Bond and Matt Booty (which he now reports to) above him. My guess he left Xbox to rank up, which he did to the top level at abk, but with them now being independent divisions instead of activision calling all the shots, he’s like in stagnation.

It kinda makes sense now, with knowledge that the leadership at Blizzard (which was him) canceled their big survival game it made him look bad, maybe as bad as when Kotick canceled many other projects to focus on cod.

But others like Lulu announce their departure last month, which I’m assuming would no longer be needed as Xbox proably already has someone in said position for Xbox as well..

Should I start a Twitter/x account and cover gaming news, just regurgitating like what I post here, only in relation to gaming? Maybe throw in some spicy hot takes, like is brisket better than bulogi first when at kbbq?

I’ve seen some say that ms/Xbox has only laid off like 9 percent. With notes that the average for post merger is about 30%
