Official Thread New PC Hardware Discussion. POST YOUR RIG/SETUP.

Valve Index with 4 Vive Trackers for Feet, Waist, and Chest.

Almost silly, but I mostly use if for a free game VRChat, but that 'game' is extremely extensive with content and supports full body tracking.

Damnit! Now I want to upgrade my RAM and I have zero reason to.

DDR4 is so freakin' cheap.

I could upgrade from 2666Mhz to 3600, which I believe my motherboard supports in XMP, $90 for 2x16GB or $55 for 2x8GB.

But why? What is the point? (because you can!)

Not gonna do it. I won't notice a difference. I could run the most demanding task on my PC and pull up task manager and I won't be using even half my RAM capacity.

See how I talked myself out of that? Phew.

Now to go look at a new pair of shoes.........LOL.

Yeah RAM once you get to a certain point is just there for bragging rights in mem tests lol. 99% of the time you won't notice any diff for most consumers.

Another battle station update.

Got a new DAC/AMP from a company called Schiit. The Schiit Hel+ and boy this thing is unreal. I've heard things in games and music I've never heard before, this thing can really deliver the power to my Sennheiser HD6XX and HD58X (that I use for games) that they been poorly missing.

Got rid of all of my monitor stands and now all of my monitors are mounted on desk mounts and has given me a lot of desk real estate back.

My laptop is also on a mount along with its monitor to the right. This runs my Streamlabs and elgato facecam and all that junk. I also added a streamdeck mini to automate that, and also got the new elgato 4K X capture card to replace my old HD60S+. Not sure if I mentioned that I got a new main webcam or not, but I replaced my old Logitech c922x with the Logitech 4K Brio cam, I use this camera specifially for video calls with my family and friends.

Would it be possible to build or or buy a VR ready PC for $1000?
I don't see why not. My current build from 5 years ago handles vr pretty well and I only paid 1600 for it at the time. The RTX 30 series seems very affordable as far as cards go. I'm rocking a 2080S and it does fine, though obviously there are higher settings available I can't do

Do you think this would be adequate for VR? I think I’d prefer a laptop since it’s portable

Adequate, I'm sure. I just looked it up and it looks like it's benchmarks are lower than the 2080 S- still costs less too. Interesting. That said, a 40 series can do dlss 3.0 and is more advanced. Looks like it's more of a 1080p card

You just make me jelly

Just bought a new keyboard.

I'm tired of my 60% Red Dragon mechanical keyboard that Windows asks "are you sure you want to allow Red Dragon blah blah" and then hit yes.

It's been a great keyboard, but I miss having a number pad and dedicated cursor buttons, and delete etc etc. I'm too old to want to have to remember how to do second function s***.

That's not where I bought it or what I paid for it, just the product page. Apparently coming tomorrow. Hope it's fairly compact. I went for the Brown keys......I like a bit of click I don't work in an office so noone to offend.

I'll update how this works out for me.

Went with the white keyboard because I have this weird thing, like even here, it's white background with black text......totally fine.

I try reading something white text on black background, even for less than a minute, and walk away to do something else, I will still see the white text in my vision, which is weird but a thing apparently (well it is a thing because it happens to me)

Any experience out there with Royal Kludge stuff?

How much would it cost to build a gaming PC that's really future proof? I mean one that could run that cyberpunk update with the path tracing etc? I've been thinking about getting a gaming PC off and on for a while but I don't want to spend a lot more than I would in a console only to have things not be able to run at the highest visual settings a year later.

~ $3500 a bit more depending upon the specifics and wanting to future proof. Specifically for path tracing and to run it well an RTX 4080 at least. What you have to remember is that PCs are constantly getting more powerful. You don't need to run the highest settings to be better than consoles today because consoles run usually a mix of medium to low (or below low even) on alot of todays most demanding games.

That being said, you will be paying a pretty penny to make sure you are somewhat future proof for an initial build. However if you want to continue to stay on the cutting edge with computer hardware, be prepared to upgrade every 2-3 years and depending upon if you decided on Intel or AMD, that could be an entirely new build with a new CPU socket/RAM etc.

Also depends on your Resolution and framerate goals. If you're aiming for 4K and 60+ FPS, what @The Living Tribunal said is absolutely true. But the initial cost is the highest price. Most of us, keep hardware for a while so, a $200+ CPU upgrade here or $1000 GPU upgrade there, instead of trying to do an entirely new build every few years.

For example my CPU( Ryzen 3800x) is 5 years old. I could upgrade it but I'm still getting better than console performance out of it. Same with my 4 year old GPU ( RTX 3080.) The only reason I may upgrade is cause the itch for new tech is strong, not due to any deficiency in the parts.

I would grab a 5800X3D if I were you, a very affordable CPU upgrade that is drop in (maybe a bios updated needed) where you won't need to buy a new MB. 5800X3D is astronomically faster than a 3800X in gaming.

There is no such thing as "future proof" technology.

With that being said, you do NOT have to run games at their max settings on PC to have a better than console experience, in fact, chasing max settings is a waste of money unless you're an insane enthusiast, like me. All jokes aside, I'd rather have high framerates that use any type of super performance draining graphical settings, like RT.

Its funny you say that as that is my next purchase as soon as this tax check hits. Already updated the bios and ran "before " benchmarks.

I would want to get the best I could afford up front because I don't want to spend more money on that PC for several years after.

Thanks for the info, I have seen some DF stuff where consoles are still running some things equivalent to PC on high so I know the jump isn't going to be huge in many aspects but having a higher native resolution while having higher framerates is appealing. I would also be hooking it up to a tv and not playing on a monitor so native 4K or a something that really does a great job of faking 4K is important.

Well the consoles flat out can't do path tracing, or even a high form of ray tracing either without 30fps or other downgrades. At 4k into that and the gulf in quality and performance is even bigger vs a high spec gaming PC.

You specifically mentioned path tracing so I was alluding to that.
