What say you, is this a good prebuilt pc? They have a good three year warranty on their site

Or should I buy piece by piece, definitely that case tho 😆

Dang it’s cheaper to buy through them then through Amazon

I love that case! I was looking at that when trying to find something for my Dad.

If I was doing a tower build I'd totally do that. I'm an HTPC guy and apparently have what is still the best case for that (Silverstone GD09) which is over 10 years old.

But I'm super jealous of all the new cases. No one seems to make HTPC cases anymore.

Do it!

I’m so tempted in doing it lol but I don’t know if I should go with the 4070 4080 or 4090. Like I’m not really gonna be playing many games on it, but would love to have a card that will last a good while. I know it’ll be cheaper to source my own parts, but I know nothing of putting it together. But they include a warranty that’s almost too good to pass up. It’ll primarily be used for adobe apps, and want to get back into 3d modeling like @badmonk @starseeker and @Videodrome I feel we got a few more who do here. Bestbuy has them too? With more options, Amazon has more than the site too but they’re pricier

Figure it out later!

Do it like my 80 year old Dad, buy the case and then you HAVE to put stuff in it lol.

4080 is good 👍 or if you really want a future proof card that can last at least next five years the 4090

Are you getting a new CPU?

If so, just get a k version if you're going Intel (onboard graphics) and in a year or two get a dedicated GPU which will be way better than what's out now and probably (in my experience) scales very nicely with the rest of the system at that point.

Pretty sure AMD does high end CPU's with onboard graphics too.

If you are interested in 3d modeling. I can provide a few tips.
Pick up Blender (its free with no string attached as far as I know). There are many tutorial out there for beginners.
I am unforunately no expert in Blender as I only used it for like 2 weeks (after I end my autodesk subription to Maya LT, which I am very experience).
If you want to get next level with chacter design, you ma want to get Zbrush in future, but start with blender.

my tip to beginner 3D modeler, is just follow some tutorial, find out what you want to specialise. Character modeling, environment/props, or make practical parts (for say 3D print) like controller stand, holder for toothbrush or something, If you are interested ij partcial application, forget blender, maya or any of these pograme & get a free CAD software instead. like Fusion 360 ( I heard good things about it)
https://www.selfcad.com/blog/8-best-free-cad-software-for-3d-printing
Again, I have no experience in any of free CAD software since I can use Catia (due to my work).

If anyone has any question regard 3D modeling, freel free to ask me. I have experience in character modeling/scupting/ enviroment/props and CAD design.

Edit: sigh, another beloved software goes SAAS route, Zbrush is now subscription only. I powered my Zbrush, to start my new 3D print Project. I got a upgrade available, so innocently I clicked "upgrade" but kept getting error.

After googling, I realized they were bought by Maxon, & the latest version is subscription only.

The software industry is out of control & badly need regulation and oversight

2024 rig update, added a couple of new things this year and changed some things.

I removed my 4th monitor simply because it wasn't super necessary and I needed room on my desk more than I needed the 4th monitor. Bought a Shure MV7X XLR mic to replace my Wave DX XLR mic, added a steam deck plus so I can have better control over my audio, really wanted one with knobs. Cat hair is still prevailant even though I vacuum my desk 3 times a week.

Finally got around to adding an SSD to my PC. Removed all other HDDs and now the PC runs silent.

Only really wanted it for boot up and less noise so is only a SATA 3 type. Still, noticed an improvement in game world loading in Insurgency Sandstorm. It was barely playable on my old rig, now it is very playable with just an SSD added.

Hey fellas! I'm looking at a decent tax return this year and figured it's time to get a new PC. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I'm shooting for less than 2500. I'm aiming for an RTX 4080 (4090s are so expensive, and an 80 is a huge step up from my 2080 S) as the 40 series has those new Nvidia features. Aside from the obvious gaming, I also use my PC for 3d graphics work and multimedia processing, so RAM and speed is important too. My MoBo is not going to cut it either, and Obviously I'll need new power supply, so Im looking at a new build.

There are, of course, tons of options out there and I trust some of you PC heads to give me a good line in on getting the best rig I can.

This is a good place to start and you can then swap and replace based on your desire:

Component TypeModelPrice (at Pub Time in USD)
CPUAMD Ryzen 7 7800X3d$399
MotherboardGigabyte B650M Aorus Elite AX$189
GPURTX 4080 Super$999
RAMG.Skill Trident Z5 RGB Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 6000$112
StorageWD Black SN850X (2TB)$129
CaseHyte Y40$149
PSUCorsair RM750e$99
CoolerARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 360mm AIO$111
Total:Row 8 - Cell 1$2,187

This high-end rig should provide enough performance to play games at 1440p ultra settings with strong frame rates, and 4K ultra with playable frame rates

None of my monitors are 4k, but I hear DLSS 3 does a good job upscaling. I do have a 120 monitor, but I've never gamed that high. I am a sucker for Raytracing, and that's where everything is headed and Nvidia is on the forefront of that. I hear the 4080 runs blender really well too. Rendering (in viewport as well as offline) speed is a big deal for me too. More framerates and lots of ram. I do want video editing and want to get into vfx as well.

Ooh that looks nice. are 4080 Supers really only 999? I keep seeing it going for 1200. Where do you find these prices?

You can put the parts into pcpartspicker as well to see if there are any recent sales

The MSRP is $999 but retailers may be selling for more . Here is one for sale at Amazon for 1049

Amazon product

I did see one for 999 on amazon, but there are no reviews for it. Kinda scares me, lol, but it does say 200 sold. I suppose it can be returned, but I have to have it installed to know if it's good or not

Yeah are those Nvidia founders edition ? I would do some research into how well they cool. I have heard they are better now with the 4000 series.

GPU prices since Covid have been pretty terrible. But for your needs a 4080 would suffice. I can't recommend any AMD GPU as I gave up on them years ago. As for MB and CPU, I'd say stick with what ever brand you feel most comfortable with. I was with Intel FOREVER but AMD gives more bang for your buck and I switched a few years ago with a Ryzen 3800x.

Yeah my last pc had a ryzen cpu. Worked great.

Blender is an amazing free software. It improves at an astronomical rate (you'll find yourself constantly downloading the newest version). You can also do everything from basic modeling, to zbrush style sculpting, to compositing, to animation. It's got everything.

It's all node based too, which is the standard these days. I see zero reason to waste money on "professional" 3d packages if you don't specifically need it for your job. You can even get add-ons to change it to feel more like Maya or MAX, etc in how it controls to fit your preference.

You can even get substance painter add-ons for it, and they have movies on Netflix made in Blender these days.

As far as Cards go, I'm hearing the 4080 works really well for blender (you can turn on GPU compute), and Eevee (the real-time renderer) is really good. That's why I'm shooting for that for my tax-return build. AND don't forget the RAM!

Thank you 🙏

I know they say bigger is better but is 16 gigs enough or go big like 64?

This is my frame of reference from an artist I follow

IMG_5213.jpeg

This is the ram…

Any recommendations on say speed/best? Not a fan of RGB lighting but not against it. I’ve seen some RGB variants go for less
What CPU?

I like to find out the "native" support for RAM from the CPU. And then consider the cas latency stuff...... I dunno I think the latency specs are more important than speed, but you want the max "native" speed because why not. Then consider price. But I honestly have no idea. I feel like RAM speed is not a huge factor once you get up there. Like my CPU supports "native" DDR4 2666, but I still had to turn on XMP to get that. I could go out and get say, 3600 Ram, but the cas latency would probably be worse, and I was told I'd be lucky to see a 1 or 2 FPS benefit while gaming.

I personally like Corsair Vengeance RAM. Low profile, simple, reliable.

Damnit! Now I want to upgrade my RAM and I have zero reason to.

DDR4 is so freakin' cheap.

I could upgrade from 2666Mhz to 3600, which I believe my motherboard supports in XMP, $90 for 2x16GB or $55 for 2x8GB.

But why? What is the point? (because you can!)

Not gonna do it. I won't notice a difference. I could run the most demanding task on my PC and pull up task manager and I won't be using even half my RAM capacity.

See how I talked myself out of that? Phew.

Now to go look at a new pair of shoes.........LOL.
