Project Scorpio

I will be bold. It will match the NEO in price.

It better because the most powerful console has never won a gen until this gen with the PS4 i think. They need to eat some of cost up front if they really want to be market leaders again. Scorpio has the makings of being the 360 all over again if done right.

Does Microsoft care about all that is the question. I personally don't care what the Scorpio costs or what it's position is in the market. I'm sticking with the S for awhile either way. Unless they lied and the Scorpio has groundbreaking exclusive games at launch. Looks like at the Scorpio will just be a powerful console with solid resolution and performance. Not every dev is going to take advantage of the specs.

The Playstation was more powerful than the Saturn. The SNES was more powerful than the Genesis (the genesis did have that x2 processor though, or something different like that.)

The Genesis version of some games, hands down kicked the s*** out of the SNES versions. ( ha ha long time ago... )

Finally the OG Italian leaker strikes again:

A leak of AMD's slide suggests the arrival of Zen and Vega for 2017: will be the Xbox Scorpio chip?
Lightning, lightning in the open air: a recent AMD intended for the group of investors to some slides leak does dissolve a bit 'of fog around the new chips based on Zen and Vega.

Both technologies will not be ready before the first quarter of 2017 and, it seems, there is more than one point in connection with Project Scorpio, which is the new Microsoft Xbox. The slides, which show some generic data of the CPU and GPU Zen Vega next production, they also show the presence of Project Scorpio.

Obviously this is not a confirmation that the new Xbox will assemble SoC custom of the two new discoveries "made by AMD," but it's still a good suggestion ...

If MS goes for Zen and Vega then we're talking a serious Premium product. That won't be cheap. The timeframe fits though.
Zen-based APUs are expected in the second half of 2017.

Im still trying to figure out how Digital Foundry still thinks the project scorpio cant do 4k but Sony Neo can?

This just made Neo a fisher price toy.

According to them:

Xbox Scorpio

"Based on existing AMD Radeon technology, the bottom line is that 6TF of GPU power isn't enough to power a convincing 4K experience. AMD's R9 390X offers around 5.9TF and struggles to push 4K resolution at anything like 30fps on modern PC titles. Now, we can assume that the move to the next-gen GCN architecture will give us some efficiency improvements, but it's hard to believe that this is enough to turn a 390X-level GPU into a top-tier Radeon R9 Fury X equivalent (8.4TF).

But it has to be said that we have seen developers start to extract more from Xbox One and PS4 than we see on equivalent PC parts - something borne out from the E3 demos of Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3, which are - remarkably - running on hardware equivalent to AMD's £80 R7 360 graphics card. So maybe - maybe we will indeed see 4K native titles.

PS Neo

"It's a remarkable turnabout. A good portion of PlayStation 4's success has been down to its spec advantage over Xbox One, combined with a focus on the hardcore player. Sony's technological advantage will be gone with the next wave of hardware - we already know that it cannot support true 4K resolution on cutting-edge games, because we've seen the internal documents that outline Sony's upscaling strategies for 4K display support (more on that soon). It's also unfeasible for Sony to produce a radically revised Neo - the silicon has been designed, developer kits have gone out. Matching Scorpio would require scrapping Neo's existing processor completely."

He he ☺ I just hope Richard Leadbetter at DF remember this:
If you're going to bash a company over power at least have the spine to stick by those statements when the tables turn.

Very true, but the majority of them looked better on the SNES. I was a Sega guy and I was always jealous of how good some she's games looked

It's going to have a hardware advantage but they've already said it's up to developers to use the power of the Scorpio. People thinking every game is going to be 4k and 60fps are fooling themselves.

how you think we got into this mess in the first place with the 1080p with 60 fps.

People will never be satisfied. If we got locked 1080p/60fps for games for the next few years i'd be fine with that. Temper your expectations for Scorpio, it may be the most powerful console but i don't see it being anything special given it's still in the One family. I could be wrong. We'll see.

I just look at it like this TD, with Neo and Scorpio, we should have conversions of games like Battlefield 1 with very little compromise or limitations. And I don't necessarily mean 4K.

2k or even 1080p with more effects and improved frame rates upscaled to 4K is going to be a big improvement over what we have now and what the X1 and PS4 will be able to output in the coming years.

I agree on the tempered expectations, but at the same time we are just starting to see developers really getting into DX12 stuff, and games that are built from the ground up on it, not just ported over.

Gears looks to be a good first example, and that's exciting. Given Scorpio is still in the One family, it's not like devs have to learn how to use a totally new machine, so we should see bigger gains sooner than if we had machines with entirely new architecture, and therefore a new learning curve.

Beta tested for the future

Im not sure why they are talking 4k 60. I imagine 4k 30 will be more common, but if devs are getting 1080p 60 on the one, then we will see 4k 60 on the scorpio.

lets be honest here...Do we really need 4k? ill take 1440 any day for me.

Yes we do need 4K. Just like we need advancement in shaders, particles, post processing, AA, AI, animations, etc.

1440 is a no no resolution for the masses. It is 1080P or 4K.

So VR as in Oculus partnership and not AR as in Hololens.

Is Hololens way further down the road? Would AR require more power to run VR? Common sense says it wouldn't.
