Project Scorpio

Regardless of what they say, there will be software or hardware needed to comb through and deal with the differences between the two hardwares just as DirectX does with PC hardware.
Well, that's got to be true. Something has to say spec a, b, or c upon loading games now, moving forward. They already have to tell it version b is capable of HDR, etc. This all makes sense.

I thought you were talking emulation, which doesn't seem to be the case. My bad.

Anybody else assuming this thing is going to be crazy expensive?

Crazy expensive relative to usual console pricing, yes.

Crazy expensive relative to other platforms that have similar to what this things packs, no.

As I said before, I'm expecting a $600 - $700 price tag. They have a cheaper option that works well and will not be made obsolete by Scorpio. This SKU is going to be for those who want the "premium" experience. It's just like the S Controller vs the Elite.
No way in hell it will be that price $700. It'll be $200 more, max, for base, compared to S. I'm betting $499 for base.

There is absolutely no way this launches over $499 unless Microsoft has lost its tiny little mind.

Doesn't matter if it is the most powerful console or not, they have to be price competitive with Neo. In that regard $499 may also be too high if Neo is out long enough for its first price cut by the time Scorpio launches.

Even if it is significantly higher @ 1st I don't see this being a problem. The S can play the same games and is their for the bulk of the market. The Scorpio is the the big boy's console. People just need to save their pennies get a second job... input ps3 sales pitch here.

Now then if you don't have an alternative cheaper console like PS3 didn't that is when people won't give it any attention. When PS3 didn't sell @ 1st people felt vindicated for rejecting the price. With this setup it needs to be marketed as the scorpio is really for the hardcore gamer. If you consider yourself hardcore you need to step it up to the scorpio. This is the same kind of thinking when the new iphone comes out and it causes a feeding frenzy. Now I don't think it will get that crazy for MS but it will move expensive consoles well.

X1S will be the bread and butter for MS, it will be even cheaper when Scorpio launches. Scorpio is a premium product, most of the potential Scorpio buyers doesn't care if the price is e.g. 499 or 699 USD. In 3 or 4 years the Scorpio price will be greatly reduced and it will appeal to the mass marked. ( by then roumers of the Scorpio 2 will be out, and same thing will happen )

It's a very exciting time to be a console player, I never thought I would see consoles with higher specs in the same generation.
Thanks MS - Scorpio day one for me.

I'm thinking in Canadian $, should have noted that. That's more like $600 USD then. Prepare yourself though, no one thought $150 controllers would sell out with a six month backlog a few years ago.

I'm not sure why it keeps getting referred to as mid-gen. There has only been one console generation that lasted eight years. It used to be 4-5 years. The Neo fits better as it's a year sooner. The jump in power dwarfs all previous generations combined.

Because we keep our games and peripherals?

Because that is exactly what it is.

You can't have a new generation when it is mandatory for all games to be playable of current-gen hardware.

I think it keeps getting referred to as mid-gen bc it is. Normally when a new console launches, the devs have to start from scratch with new graphic engines. It often take years to optimize the engines to the new consoles. X1 and Scorpio are both DX12 consoles, the devs can just continue optimize their engines for DX12. (That goes for the PC version too btw. )

And next year the devs have learned to do even more cool optimizing and great special effects in DX12. We all win ☺

So it's not mid gen. It's then end of Gen. Still, do we not call new graphic card new generation cards? The Scorpio seems enough of an upgrade to warrant the usage.

No. It is mid-gen.

How can you call it end of gen or a new gen when all games are made for the current gen? Until Scorpio becomes the default/base platform for game development we are still stuck in this gen. That is likely 3-4 years after Scorpio launches. Hence the mid-gen terminology.

Yup. Anything over $500 and it's dead in the water...

I'm thinking between the $400 - $500 range for specific models. $399 might be the base model with no controller, no game packaged with it.
So...

$399 = Scorpio base model. No controller. No game.

$450 = Base model w/ one controller.

$500 = Base model w/ one controller. One or two games packaged.

Regarding pc graphic cards I think you're right, all card makers always call their next card 'new graphic card generation'. Seeing in that light; yes, The Scorpio seems enough of an upgrade to warrant the usage.

So do you have to die before your kid is considered a new generation? It's the next step, and I'd argue games aren't different enough from generation to generation to really use that as a barometer. Or we can say it is the Next generation hardware, but generations as we know them are going the way of the dodo. Like with PC- generations don't really apply in a linear way.

I don't necessarily like the fact that a new generation is thrown at us so fast, but at least it's enough of a power jump to be worth while.

Really. Go look at what we got at the start of the 360 generation from the start of the Xbox generation. The games are very very different.

You are just trying to muddy very clear waters. Even Microsoft are saying it isn't a new generation.

And no, you don't have to die for that, but 2 children born a few years apart are considered the same generation anyway. Just like X1 and Scoprio.

All these terminology of mid and new are going to be a thing of a pass. MS is changing the game where the old traditional stuff is no more and wont apply any more.

'We want the most powerful console because we made a slightly weaker one than the competition earlier this gen'...

... is the correct gen terminology for Scorpio, I believe.

Succinct and easy to remember.

"We are giving console gamers the quality and power PC Gamers have, in your living room......no other platform can match us....." is what salty PS4 Neo owners will be having to swallow 16 months from now!

Eh, that's mostly just gaming maturing in general, imo. I'm not really advocating calling it a generational leap (though the power differential definitely supports it), just that Mid-gen update isn't really accurate. The waters have been muddied. The traditional generation system is over.

Kids born 2 years apart aren't the same thing, imo. From a power standpoint, the Scorpio represents a larger leap in power than any previous console iteration- which is how I see it. Iterative.

Not initially. Initially stock was very low to gauge/increase interest/demand.
Right, so although it was intentional, it was because they did not expect such a high demand. The success of the Elite has, imo, paved the way for the Scorpio launch. They have a cheaper option that works great, so no customers are alienated by the high-end version. Both will sell.
