Project Scorpio v3.0

The Xbox One outsold the PS4 for the second half of 2016 in NA.

But that's people trading in and new consoles, which doesn't count unless they're buying a PS4 slim or Pro, in which case it's further proof of Sony's dominance #rawr.

The device has to have the hardware built in.
Nothing can get the upgrade unless its there already from reading through the threads
on my TV(the only TV to get it that I am aware of)They say the TV had the hardware all along but Sony and Dolby didn't come to terms until it was announced this Jan @ CES.
No UHDBR player that doesn't say its getting it will get it as the hardware isn't there.
I wish it was that easy cause than I could just keep this Samsung UHDBR player.
The TV needs capable hardware, yes! Please explain why a player needs some exclusive chip from Dolby... I'm honestly not buying it because it does not follow logic.

If Sony can process a half-4K to 4K checkerboard image, which is actually a 2-step process, surely a videogame processor can handle whatever demands Dolby wants for HDR. There is no way it is that hard, you just need processing and the software to tell it what to do. I know that there is some back and forth communication with the display, but that shouldn't matter. It's just data and processing, same as anything. Any capable hardware could do that, on the player end.

It's a license thing though, for sure. For this reason, Microsoft might not ever cater to Dolby.

Who said it didn't count? I traded my PS4 in the day after I got my Pro, nobody said it only happens for Xbox owners. BTW the slim PS4 was looked at as a downgrade by a lot of original owners for lacking the optical audio output and just the overall design so I doubt many traded their originals in for that one, for the Pro I have no doubt a lot were traded in. You can't judge how well a console is doing by it's launch anyway, the Wii U did really well at it's launch, it was sold out but now look at it. That's why I don't get people thinking MS can charge $500 for Scorpio and think it'll do well, they've been there and done that with that price point and it didn't work. After the hardcore xbox fans buy it sales will tank at that price, it's not a good way to grow the user base or gain market share.

Think you're misunderstanding. The 360 was $500 if you're equating today's money. $400 then is equal to $500 now. So it launched for what is $500 in today's money and did well. Scorpio can drop price in year two or three as well.

That doesn't matter, at the time the price as listed as $399 and that was considered kind of high at the time because consoles before that usually launched at $299. Adjusting for inflation means nothing and it's kind of a silly point to be honest, we've already seen in this generation that a $500 console regardless of power will limit put limits on how many are willing to buy it. It's also going to have the same issues the PS4 Pro has in that it's an upgraded version of an older console, it won't have exclusive games and people who bought an Xbox One/One S in the last few years may not be able to justify spending a bunch of money on new hardware that just make the games they can already play on the console they own look better.

One more point about your inflation argument, the 360 didn't really take off until the price came down a bit. Yes it had a strong launch just like every console does but it took a while to really get going. If MS had launched the X1 at a lower price and not made all of the other stupid mistakes they made the console would be in a better position now than it is in NA and the UK, I still think the rest of the world is probably a lost cause after 3 generations without making much progress. They need to keep this thing at $399 IMO, calling it a premium device is fine and all but it's also 4 years after they launched the original machine which by the time Scorpio launched will likely be $50 cheaper than it is now, that would give them about a $150 difference in price which sounds about right for base model vs top of the line model.

Hey everybody, ok now predict why will it suck for some.

Educated guesses based on the past slams on every MS console please.

No changeable faceplates this time?
Too big, too small, too black too white, not a Playstation...
MS is evil. They also want to make money. In MS' case these are the same thing, which in turn makes them doubly evil.

When none of the launch players get DV you will see.
d00d I read pages and pages on this very thing @AVSF

My guess:

"Not as small as the Xbox One S"
..one point deduction.

They will put it right next to it and then moan about it for a full minute in vid review.

Isn't that what the Scorpio is for? Harcore gamers?

Scorpio just has to be a killer box as in the packaging itself. I expect something surprisingly slim and sweet. I have zero issue with an external power brick.

It is only an issue because the PS doesn't have one. If the opposite were true and the PS had a power brick the xbox would suck because it doesn't have one. Spin doctors would claim the PS needs all that juice that only a separate brick provides because #sonycares

I'm sure they'll want to sell more than just a couple of million of these things.
I guess we'll have to wait to see what's under the hood. All this cost talk is pure speculation. I'm sure it won't be cheap though.

I think people thinking it will be small are in for a rude awakening. The Pro is bigger than the PS4, and the Scorpio will have more stuff, like the need for more cooling, and if rumors are true, then more RAM.

We're gonna need a bigger boat!

I get that, but those are hardware players. The newer ones have the required processor, or in the case of the firmware upgradable ones, probably the processing equivalent. I'm not saying that isn't the norm for a hardware player, to be required a specific type of chipset. I'm saying that a PC or console (which is basically a PC, in this case) should just be able to use whatever processors that it has. They may not have released a software solution at this point, but it sure as hell is possible.

Edit: either way, I hope they find a way to add it by the time Scorpio releases. It's obviously the premier HDR solution. Makes a mid line set look better than a premium without proper calibration. It's the great equalizer, as the content should look as close to intended as possible.

X-Rays: Hi Tom, a question about GCN Scorpio ... I think you got it wrong ... can you check?

Tom: Yes, you're right, it's GCN 5.0

AMD confirms that its Ryzen CPU will be released this March, to be followed by Vega GPU in Q2 2017
February 1, 2017 John Papadopoulos
amd-zen-summit-ridge-672x372.jpg

During AMD’s fourth-quarter earnings, CEO Lisa Su announced that its Ryzen CPU will be released this March, and its upcoming Vega GPU will be released in Q2 2017. We already knew that AMD plans to release Ryzen in the first quarter of 2017, however it’s good knowing that the CPU will be indeed releasing in March.

Su also claimed that there will be widespread system availability from day one for Ryzen, so PC gamers will be able to purchase it without encountering major availability issues.

It’s worth noting that according to the GDC 2017 session scheduler, AMD plans to release the Ryzen CPU during this year’s GDC event. AMD has not confirmed or denied this rumour as of yet. Naturally, take it with a grain of salt.

While AMD has not revealed yet the price of Ryzen, it did reveal that it already has plans for successors to Ryzen. Su referred to those successors as “Zen 2” and “Zen 3.”

It will be interesting to see whether Ryzen will be coming at a challenging price, and whether it will put some pressure to Intel (its latest Kabylake high-end CPU disappointed a lot of funs as it did not offer any significant performance boost over the Skylake counterpart).

People need to just let it go. Scorpio is going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Expect worlds and graphics like you've never seen before. There was never a doubt in my mind that Xbox would come out on top in the end.

You know you can tuck it under the TV like every normal person that doesn't build an alter for their console in the middle of their living room. Just saying...
