It means it wouldn't be mandatory. I think there is no chance they are not BC though. It would look terrible. They are actually not in the mandatory window as they would be submitted before that time.

Last we heard from Sony was overwhelming majority would work.

I was thinking the same thing.

I think there will be BC support, just implemented in stages, I'd be surprised if their big exclusives didn't get BC support and a boost in visuals.

Here are the key lines:

On Compatibility:

1.Sony has told PlayStation 4 game developers that any new titles submitted for certification must also be compatible with PlayStation 5, beginning 13th July

2. A game will be deemed compatible with PlayStation 5 only if its submission code runs without issues on Sony's next-gen machine, and provides the same features on PS5 as it does on PS4

On Patches:

1. If a game was originally submitted to Sony after 13th July 2020, any future patch or remaster to that game would need to keep PS5 compatibility. Once a game is PS5 compatible, it must stay so.

2. If a game was originally submitted to Sony before 13th July 2020, any new patch or remaster after that date would not require PS5 compatibility, but it would be "strongly recommended".

So we have several things going here. If a game is submitted after July 13, it has to work on the PS5. Full stop. Compatibility only means that you are getting the same experience on the PS5 as you would on the PS4, no better no worse.

If you need to patch your game and the game was submitted after July 13, the game has to stay PS5 compatible. If you need to patch or remaster your game and it was submitted before July 13, it does not have to be PS5 compatible but Sony strongly recommends it.

What is the ramifications of this. Honestly I don't know.

It would surprise me if any of Sony's first party PS4 games are not compatible on the PS5. That's just an awful PR look.

Now 3rd party exclusives and multiplatform titles are a crap shoot at this point. Until Sony clarifies its stance on compatibility.

No, I don't believe that means the game can't be better on the PS5.

They are saying that they want the game to run natively on the PS5 and not need to be put in some sort of emulation mode where the multithreading has to be turned off.

Exactly FU for this Sony

That's not what it means at all, they are saying that the devs releasing new games need to make sure they run on PS5, older titles are going to be tested etc as they have been on the XSX, they don't just throw all games out there and hope they don't run into problems, if there is a problem they aren't going to force a dev to patch an old game. The newer games won't have time to be tested and devs need to make sure they run with no problems before the console launches, it's not that big of a deal but of course this is the internet so everything has to be blown up and misunderstood! It's a good thing, it means newer games will run for sure.

The title is misleading, Ryan said they'll be starting manufacturing during the summer, he never said it had started or was about to start. Thurrott didn't seem to read what he linked. they could be starting anytime between now and the fall, the PS4 didn't start production until early September. I'm sure they'll start sooner than the PS4 did but these people should be more truthful with their tweets.

I think Sony being quiet could be them wanting people to double dip.

Why jump to that conclusion now? neither game has been released yet and they haven't even debuted the games for the new console yet, they could cover all of this next week. That guy on neogaf that seems to have some real connections said at least TLOU2, GOT and cyberpunk are going to have day 1 (he said day 0) PS5 patches.

It's funny when you think about it, we are all adults here and just can't wait to give money to some corporation even though the actual product won't be in our hands for at least 5 months.

Wow that is really bad. Can't even be bothered to do the work themselves so the devs have to do it.

How are they supposed to test games that aren't going to be ready for submission until July? I don't think people understand what this is about lol. They are already testing thousands of games, some may require some works by the devs to get them to function properly especially in boost mode, these new games are coming out very close to launch and they have the kits to make sure they'll work on the new console it's the best use of time and resources, this isn't lazy it's making sure that people who buy the console will have a good experience with these new titles.

MS don't seem to have a issue doing it.

They've been working on BC for a long time so it's not really a fair comparison, they even stopped trying to work on BC 360 games for the X1 so they could get to work on the XSX BC testing etc. Remember not all 360 games work on the Xbox one either it's not a 100% thing. We also don't know if MS has said the same thing to devs or maybe they won't because they seem to be fine doing all the work themselves. It doesn't bother me either way I'm sure most PS4 games are going to work, I have no doubt all of the ones I have will or at least the vast majority of them and to be honest there's probably only a few on that list that I'd play again anyway.

No excuse. Sony knows people want it,the competition been doing it(they been getting flak for not doing it) so let's not spin away what the majority of PS players want(according to polls)
