2013 UK sales (PS4 and Xbox One)

both are selling well... congrats to Sony for selling more.... I guess... not sure they really care though... :p

agreed... Give it time... ;)

these numbers do provide some value to both MS and Sony... But not in the same way as many would like to think...

But even in the US, xbox one sales are not higher than the ps4's albeit they are closer. Not sure if that changed from the holiday season though, will need NPD numbers to confirm. For all we know, xbox one total sales may have caught up or even surpassed the ps4 in NA.

I think there is a VERY good chance that XB1 is outselling PS4 in the US. Just judging on the reception in pop culture (multiple stories of celebrities or sports figures buying bulks of XB1s for their friends or teammates), and the amount of marketing going on. In the US the XB1 seems to have the same "it" factor that the 360 had - the little things like when a TV show has characters playing video games, what controller are they holding? etc. Right now XB1 seems to be in that space, as the 360 was. That is my perception and we'll see if it's on target within the next few days I think.
 
Sales are actual important not just for MS & Sony, but also gamers & develpers. Sales have a direct relationship with 3rd party support for the platform. Just see Wii U.

No disrespect to the Wii u But haven't the X1 and 4 already surpassed their 1st year sales in a couple months?

Yep. A lot of places have actually stopped getting stock in due to dire sales.
