All Digital Future - The Loss Of Physical Games And Media

Some insight into why retailers are just removing physical Xbox games...

Limited run games CEO mentions that Xbox sells the fewest that's why they focus releasing on Nintendo and PlayStation first because they don't make anything for digital for some games i.e. Konami gets it all for digital in some of their games therefore was not worth porting in some cases

It wouldn't surprise me if by the end of this gen, 80% of console software sales are digital. And if that holds true it really wouldn't make sense to have a physical drive. I can see Xbox going completely digital next gen with Playstation having a base console that is all digital with an optional disk drive accessory.

For all the naysayers, I'd remind them that while Xbox is NOT a market leader by any important metric, weirdly the people running the show at Xbox, have been time and time again been THE innovators and trendsetters in the space.

Xbox made the Hard Drive the storage standard in the console space.
Xbox was the first console to charge an annual fee to play online and introduced fully integrated online gaming on home consoles with the introduction of Xbox Live, the arguable standard of console online systems.
Xbox was the first console maker to really try to push their properties beyond gaming ( Remember the meme: TV, TV, TV?)
Xbox's original plans with the Xbox One( Read: Always Online) are slowly but unfortunately becoming the standard across all platforms.
The Xbox team also began developing cloud gaming technology when many still rightfully believed it was a pipe dream. But with competing services like Amazon Luna, and NVIDIA GeForce Now, it’s clear Microsoft was ahead of the curve on this one. Even Sony confirmed in 2019 that it has partnered with Microsoft to further the advancement of cloud gaming on the PlayStation platform.
We're not even going to talk about Gamepass and it being one of the biggest disruptions to the gaming market in years.

I say all this to bring the point home. IF Microsoft decided to go all in with Digital only next gen and it has any type of measurable success, best believe that the industry will shift with them. And with the PC market having already given up physical media, they have a blueprint to follow. And it looks like major US retailers at least are warming up to the idea.

Unless this gen quickly turns around, I still foresee ps6 having a physical disc option which bodes well for resale market and collectors.

Some example for current gen (PS5) games:

Demon's Souls: 30% Digital, 70% Physical
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart: 24% Digital, 76% Physical
Spiderman Miles Morales: 34% Digital, 66% Physical
Sackboy a Big Adventure: 23% Digital, 77% Physical

Keep in mind Sony have already tested the attachment so I wouldn't be at all surprised if they just release one model and a separate disc drive for those that want it.

Apparently people have been getting great deals at best buy for games.

This is one thing that will be sorely missed. Who remembers the 9.99 cyberpunk physical copy deals when it first bombed and retailers were trying to get rid of it?

I'll have to check out my local Best Buy. Last time I was there, it was depressing. It is just an empty space with a few TVs in it. I still get e-mails on their "sales" and there's nothing worthwhile.

Anecdotally, I went to Best Buy and Walmart this morning. Both Physical media sections either it be movies, music or games are very small. I think the phasing out has begun.

Well it was mentioned before, but many ran with they’re getting rid of it all, engagement narrative with the rest ignore, buried and forgotten?

I still weirdly have my physical PC copy. My digital copy is still in my Steam library though.

I was at Best Buy yesterday for the first time in 2 years. The game selection was pretty bad for all consoles.

Yeah I usually do mine shipped online now or if I have GameStop credit I will do in-store.
