Analysis – Sony’s PlayStation Now Beta Pricing Is Overly Expensive
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...ion-now-beta-pricing-is-overly-expensive.aspx
this needs to change, tho since I have both consoles, for me I can just ps3 games on my ps3
yeah, I do not talk about it but I do own a ps4

At E3, Sony announced that PlayStation Now will be going into open beta later this summer. Since then, users in the closed beta have noticed some changes, namely that there are prices associated with content rentals now. The problem is that the cost for renting games doesn’t make much sense.

Before we get into the weeds, it’s important to note that this is a beta and, therefore, final pricing might be more realistic in relation to other purchasing options. In fact, it needs to be, because out of eight games we sampled at random (approximately half of those available), there are less expensive options for owning.
In an email to beta participants, Sony says that pricing is set by developers and publishers. Based on what we’re seeing, it’s clear that content owners are charging prices for rental that they know exceed the purchase price. (The moral is that you should do your research before starting a rental.)

PlayStation Now allows users to rent games that are stored on the server and streamed to a PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and eventually a PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV. This is similar to the concept behind OnLive and different than having a game locally on disc or on your system's hard drive. Sony will be offering a variety of rental periods, which it is testing along with prices during a beta period.

*Surveyed from a Amazon and GameStop (note: GameStop is Game Informer's parent company).
There are benefits to PlayStation Now that go beyond the price, though. If you don't have a PlayStation 3 (or PC or Xbox 360) on which one of the titles is available for purchase, a PlayStation 4, Vita, or even a PlayStation TV will be compatible with the rentals. This also means that you'll be able to play these games across devices using your account.

Put simply, Sony needs to insist that rental prices do not exceed the cost of purchasing a game via PSN. Additionally, ownership pricing via PSN should be clearly disclosed on the PlayStation Now page. It's up to the user to check retail pricing (just as it is with digital purchases now), but for the sake of transparency, Sony needs to display its digital storefront pricing options (and related limitations, like only being able to play on one type of device) in one place.

It's also important to note that Sony is currently testing durations. The four hour option is an absurdly short length for a relatively exorbitant price across the board. Spending four hours with Final Fantasy XIII or XIII-2 (or even Deus Ex: Human Revolution for that matter) won't give you much insight into the games. Why anyone would choose that over spending an extra $1 - $3 is beyond me.

Publishers should reject that duration as it will likely harm them in the long run. Can someone who played Final Fantasy XIII for only four hours really make a fair assessment of the game? Probably not.

On paper, PlayStation Now is a good idea, but if this pricing scheme is a portent of things to come, it's likely going to die on the vine. Rental, especially at these prices, won't be appealing to many users. It certainly won't incentivize positive word of mouth, and if publishers don't start seeing benefit from the service, they'll have little reason to commit to it for the long-term.

Sony has a lot riding on PlayStation Now, starting with the $380 million purchase of Gaikai, continuing through technology and marketing investments, and concluding with consumer faith in one of Sony's key promises from the February 2013 PlayStation 4 reveal. Sony can't afford to mess this up, and that means this pricing needs to change before the public launch.

I think 4 hours is a decent amount of time, if you just want rent it shortly to see if you like the game, and want to buy it later or rent for a longer period.. :-/

Yeah I'm game for 4 hour rentals if they're like 1 dollar. If I have a block of time coming up where I know I can game for a bit uninterrupted, I think the 4 hour rental is ideal. Actually, my ideal rental would always be hours: 4 hours; 8 hours, 12 hours, etc.

Damn. Those prices are actually pretty good. The article just convinced me otherwiselol

Yep garbage pricing. The seven day rental isn't too bad but the four hour is just insulting and 90 days lmao. Just buy the game for less.

Those prices are laughable. Service is DOA with pricing like that.

What would you guys like for pricing? The only place I can rent games around here is Red Box, which is 2 bucks a night.

I thought the pricing they had right now was jus placeholders. Those prices really do suck but I'm sure there are people out there that will pay them.

I live on a desolate island, so I don't have much buying or renting options, without traveling for an hour by ferry.. :p
I buy allmost everything digital nowadays.. I think the one week price seems OK. :-/

I see this as a option for people who don't own the platform..
i.e. if gamers don't own a Vita, and Persona 4 Golden get's made available. It's nice to be able to play it, without cashing out for a Vita or PSTV.

.

I did the 30 day option for alpha protocol, i think the 4 hour rental pricing is really bad though. If they were like a dollar to 2 dollar for 4 hour rental that might be better. So far the service has been pretty good for me, havent had too many issues while playing dead island riptide or alpha protocol so i think the service is cool but the pricing could be better.

7 days seems to be the sweet spot, you can probably beat the game by then unless it's a JRPG or something. 4 hours is a bit too much. $1 would be good for that.

Same here. I'd think a 4 hr rental shouldn't top a $1, especially when I can go to redbox and rent it for 24hrs for $2, even cheaper (or free) with promo codes.

Will be nice if they do this for new releases. Then you can pay a small amount to try before you buy.

Agreed. I think those prices are feelers. If the community buy into it and has no problem, then the prices remain. If the community has issues and is vocal about it, then changes are made.

I thought publishers are setting the prices not Sony? Unless it's a 1st party game.

If people don't want it at those prices they'll lower them quick.

I wonder if the pricing will change when the open beta starts next month. I hope the game selection gets better as for me i have found the selection kinda of lacking right now

These prices are atrocious. PSNow should have just been digital downloads for purchase, not streaming rentals. Its just throwing away money buying into any of this. The least they could do is let you purchase games to stream at your leisure. I hate the feeling of being locked down by a time table. This thing is going to go belly up quick in its current state, and I hope it does so they have to rethink the whole thing. What a joke.

I wish sony would have waited before it got out of beta before charging people to play the games at least so they know the service will be pretty stable. I was surprised when i accessed playstation now and had to pay so soon for the games. I dont think anyone is trolling they are just a little upset at the pricing structure.

It could just as easily be said that anyone who thinks these price points are ok must be Sony fan boy. It would be more precise to say however, that people in general don't like being ripped off, which is what Sony is doing with PSNow in its current state. Yeah, yeah, it's just a beta at the moment, but it's already DOA for me, because I have no interest in throwing money away on rentals. Either let me purchase the games I want to play, and play them on my own time, or I won't play them at all. It's bad enough this service is based on streaming, and lacks the ability to save your games locally.

Terrible idea. I'll take free demo any day. If I like it, I'll buy physical copy of game. Simple as that.

I'm not going to write a lengthy diatribe about staying on topic. Just do it. Next person to mention Xbox One or it's gamers or talk about fanboys is getting a 1 week ban no if ands or buts. 2 weeks if I see the post while I'm eating, and 3 weeks if I see the post while I'm drinking.

Not sure why staying on topic is so hard for many of you. It's like some of you revel in being remedial as hell

I'm still hopeful for this service and the prices get chopped down a bit. When I made the transition from PS360 late last year I missed out on a few games I wanted to play like Batman: Origins and Castlevania 2. This service is the closest we will get to backwards compatibility which is great for me.

I like the idea of the service and playing ps3 games on the ps4 is really cool. The service has been pretty good for me i havent had many issues with lag just a issue where my dualshock 4 controller would lose connection to the game but that only happend a few times. If sony would offer a monthly subscription to stream unlimited amout of games i would be all over that. Also the game selection will also be key for this service to work, as of right now the game selection imo is lacking with many 1 to 2 games i am interested in.

Might be the selection is light du to it's only private beta as of now.
According to the PSNow FAQ, when the open beta launches (July 31th) there will be hundreds of PS3-titles available for the service.
I have my doubts if they will manage that on day one, but we'll see.. :p

Yeah i am pretty sure its due to being in beta state right now but their selection is still limited, i understand they probably want to try all different types of genres to see what works the best, i guess i just wanting more games that i like but i am sure others like whats on there now. I hope they will have categories that you can select and pick what game u want. Right now all there games are placed all together and you just have to scroll to see whats available.
