The latest Tropes vs. Women in Video Games video from scholar/critic Anita Sarkeesian looks at what she calls the women-as-decoration trope in latter-day titles. Sarkeesian breaks down how the trope gets used both in the games themselves and in marketing campaigns meant to sell them. Part of what Sarkeesian finds problematic about the trope is that, in game narratives, these background women's inclusion in the story don't contribute anything meaningful to the story but are rather designed to elicit shock or titillation. The games often don't offer players or main characters any investment in these encounters other than simply playing out a quest line

Seeing scenes from GTA V, Assassin's Creed II , Far Cry 3, The Witcher, Red Dead Redemptionand other games stacked one after the other does highlight how prevalent this device is in AAA video games writing. Chances are if there's a woman in a game's side mission—especially if it's a female sex worker—something terrible is going to happen to her, just to drive home just how screwed-up a particular character or gameworld is. Yet, even when compared to reactions to her prior releases, some people's responses to the video convey a lack of appreciation for discourse, with some resorting to harassment and threats. Sarkeesian says she's had to contact the police.

This video received particular signal-boosting from several high-profile directors and game designers, like Joss Whedon and author William Gibson.

But not even well-liked game developer Tim Schafer left unscathed after recommending Sarkeesian's video. He was also met with similar vitriol:

She should really shut her damn mouth, and go make some dude a sandwich.

I remember a time when everyone wasn't so goddamn entitled. In the Twitter age, everyone thinks the world revolves or should revolve around them.

What does that mean exactly? As far as I can tell, people have acted the same way on Twitter as they have long before even facebook arrived. If you're referring to a debate like this, it's hardly new in the grand scheme of things. The only recent part about it are the brands of soapboxes people use to shout their talking points.

Kotaku is only there now to get clicks. They purposely bait people and completely lack any integrity. I'm absolutely done with that site.

I guess I'm older than you.

Anita called Bayonetta sexist for having an attractive, sassy main character. Anita called Devil May Cry and Conan sexist for being male power fantasies. She's always been all over the board like a congressman on Election Day.

I don't watch Anita videos, no do I plan to as I genuinely have come to avoid all soapbox youtube videos like the plague, but I've seen Bayonetta and I can see how some could be offended by it. As male power fantasies, they definitely are. Whether that's good/bad is up to debate in my opinion, but those are total male power fantasies. If she's referring to the quantity of those titles, then perhaps it's a different thing. Not 100% sure if that was the case as I'd have to do my own research and come to a conclusion.

I've owned and played Bayonetta. It's a "female power fantasy," but she treats it and portrays it contrary to games that can be labeled as "male power fantasy." The game was a "girl power" game if you played it or even played the demo, but she labels Bayonetta as sexist solely because she is an attractive protagonist, which is a really shallow judgement of the game on her part. She just treats everything as sexist whenever she can, and that's mostly the problem. She isn't really addressing the issue so much as trying to find the best way to blow it out of proportion on all fronts.

I've played the demo, and I do feel like the character is highly sexualized, but then again, I felt like that was parody, but I don't think she's entirely off the mark with Bayonetta either. The game definitely seemed to have ingredients of the "sex sells" philosophy when I played it. Whether you personally find it good or bad is another discussion, but in that specific case, I don't think she's 100% in the wrong.

Of course Bayonetta is sexy, but that does nothing to make it sexist. Her sexuality is her empowerment just as it is for Conan and his sexy bisects. She's entirely off mark on the game. The game is definitely for women. Playing through it, even the main male protangonist is a "damsel in distress." The game is literally a male power fantasy in reverse. She marks Bayonetta as sexist for having a sassy female protagonist, but if male characters are given the same sex appeal as Bayonetta, it's a male power fantasy by her standards. It's just all wrong and just attention-getting, especially when she constantly labels these games with very serious and very misused descriptions of these games such as "blatant misogyny" and "games are supporting rape and mercy killing of women."

I can't remember specifics about the game outside of how it played, but I remember just feeling that the game was built around a a sex sells deal. Can't remember if I thought it was sexist, but I just thought the games shtick was just lackluster in the comedy department. I do remember the games advertising being more geared towards exploiting the sexual nature behind the game. There was billboard advertising essentially showing her almost naked. I can't say for sure what is/isn't sexism, as I find myself torn on specific issues. In fact I believe I've argued against your own claims of sexism before, obviously being besides the point, but as I said before, I just remember the game's theme really being built around her sexuality. Obviously at the end of the day, this is something you and this Anita woman disagree on. As for the rest of her dialogue, it's definitely a recurring complaint, but I've also seen people defend her points of views saying people paint her opinions in the same broad strokes others claim she pains sexism in.

Either way, it's a mute point to me because I don't think I'll be bothering myself to watch her vids or the retorts aimed at her. I do feel there is sexism in the game, she probably does bring up fair points, and she probably exaggerates. Whether it's because of her emotional involvement or being a swindler, I'll never care to know because of the format. I do enjoy reading though.

There is definitely sexism in games, and it is a problem. Just not the way she described it all. It's the difference between claiming the Quran says to bow to no other god and claiming the Quran says to kill all those of other religions. One is understandably true and the other is just designed to provoke very serious situations with misguided, misappropriated, and controversial choice of words. In short, she is just a troll.

Stay in the kitchen and quit your b!tchin is what i say. That ham and eggs better be cooking.
