Assassin's Creed Odyssey

I would ask you do the same for Ubisoft as well.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate - Yes
Yoshi's Crafted World - meh
Fire Emblem - perhaps but meh
Yoshi's Mansion 3 - meh
Bayonetta 3 - Nintendo developed?
Metroid Prime 4 - Yes
Pokemans - Yes
So... you win.
Still, ubisoft crushes Nintendo.

In my book they do, my opinion counts.

Sure it does, as a subjective preference. But if I claimed that some developer I'm fond of (e.g., the team that develops Yakuza) is the best developer out there and better than Nintendo, I would expect people to disagree with that and offer counter arguments.

There hasn't been an AC game this gen that has cracked 90. I'm not sure how far down into the 80s you have to go before you find one -- I stopped at entry 500 in the list Viktor posted. Best-reviewed AC game was AC 2, back in 2009 (91). AC: Odyssey might be the high point this gen, in terms of review scores.

I'm wondering how it will sell. It's bumping up against Red Dead Redemption, which isn't a comfortable thing to bump up against. Here's a poll of PS4 owners, asking what game they're looking forward to in November. Only 7% picked AC: Odyssey. 57% picked RDR2. Only 42 votes at this point, though, so it's a small sample. Still, it makes me wonder about its sales reception.

Odyssey, and Origins to a slighter extent, does have me interested in the series again. Absolutely loved the first two and the expansions to 2 but once they started going yearly I gave up.

That's kind of a ridiculous poll considering we haven't seen anything from rockstar in quite awhile. Of course RDR2 is going to dominate a poll like that.

Ah right. Didn’t see that last night. Still a cheap money grab to charge people for a release date that was previously available via geographic region.

Agreed! I have only myself to blame too because I had zero hype until I started watching a bunch of videos last week.

Still, Origins had good season pass content, so I’m hoping the same is true here as well. That plus AC3 and Liberation remastered will hopefully make it worth paying full price.

I don’t do the season pass thing. Unless I’m buying some game on sale that comes with one I never get them.

Metacritic isn't reliable. Game journalists are afraid of giving main Nintendo games bad reviews, no sane person should consider zelda botw a better video game than witcher 3 for example.

I cancelled my preorder basically because of how packed the fall is looking. I'm sure I'll get to it sometime next year but there's no way I have time to dig into this now. I mean, I really liked Origin, but I'm not even done with that yet. Seeing as there's no new AC game next year, easier to just wait for a sale.

The negative reviews seem to point to a lot of repetition and "busy work" in the games DNA. A deathknell for these types of games.

Put down my pre-order. I may go from Far Cry: Primal right into this, if I'm not feeling too much Ubi-fatigue.

Just started this and Forza. Not too deep into this yet but it sure does look good. Plus I like ancient Greece.

I would've gotten this today if I had any use for the season pass stuff.

I hate how most of the games get released on Fridays now.

AC: Odyssey is the getting the highest scores of any AC game this generation. It's second to Black Flag in the graphic below, but the Black Flag score listed there is for the last gen PS3 version, released Oct 13, a month before the current gen launched. BF's PS4 score is 83.

I think I predicted a score of 86... Time to buy a powerball ticket.

Game looks so good - I am very tempted to get the digital deluxe edition for AC III Remastered.

X1X pulls ahead pretty far in this one over pro. Higher resolution but also better draw distance and texture quality.

Yeah it looks fantastic on the X1X. Roll on Friday.

Starting playing this last night, didn't get too far. Looking forward to seeing if it has advanced much beyond Origins.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Critical Consensus
Reviewers praise Ubisoft's latest as a series high, thanks to an engaging world and the completed shift to an RPG structure

[some excerpts; full article at link below]

"It's not just in the Greek tragedy-inspired story, the vast, vast map or the sheer number of hours you're going to sink into it. It's the journey. The journey from one Greek island to another, with dolphins and whales cresting the waves alongside your boat. It's about the journey across the stunning Grecian landscape, ranging from forests bearing autumnal hues, to the majestic white marble buildings nestled comfortably in the cities, and absolutely everything in between.

This is Ubisoft's greatest departure from the series formula to date. Building on the open-world structure of last year's Origins, Odyssey adds a dialogue system, romances, multiple endings and even more RPG mechanics. In fact, Twinfinite's Zhiqing Wan says it "barely even feels like an Assassin's Creed game" and stands up just as well as a "really strong, standalone historical fiction video game."

Eurogamer's Tom Phillips notes that even the franchise's traditional focus on historical events has "shifted effortlessly into a place where godlike powers and mythical artefacts are now a major part of its everyday parlance".

"The Assassin's Creed franchise has always been very self-serious, even with the more laid-back assassins like Ezio and Jacob Frye," Wan observes. "With Odyssey, however, Ubisoft isn't afraid to sprinkle a little humor into virtually every aspect of the game.

Williams adds: "When Assassin's Creed Odyssey is on point, you can tell that Ubisoft was looking at CD Projekt Red's The Witcher for inspiration. What you do in the quests isn't particularly novel, but the folks you meet are.

Billcliffe also draws this comparison, reiterating that side quests are more likely to throw up "quirky stories with fun and memorable characters" than the "filler from older [AC] games". Improved combat and a rewarding loot system help engage players with these additional missions, but even without these mechanics, there is a lot of praise for the accompanying stories Ubisoft is trying to tell.

Additionally, the introduction of choice - not just in how you tackle each situation but even the dialogue and ways you interact with characters - has been praised as a game-changer for the often heavily scripted Assassin's Creed series.

Wan warns that Odyssey's quest choices "might seem tacked on and very straightforward at first glance" but this improved over the course of the game: "I got to see more possible combinations and permutations of different scenarios that could've played out instead of the one I got. The game's branches get pretty staggering later on, and Ubisoft definitely did an excellent job with those story deviations on their first go."

With a metacritic score of 85, it's no surprise that most reviews for Ubisoft's epic are glowing. Shifting a typically action-centric series further into RPG territory was a gamble but, critically at least, it appears to have paid off.

"After 70 hours I've only just finished the main storyline and I still have plenty to see in Odyssey's Greece, and it's a joy to keep on exploring. No-one's made an open-world RPG with this much depth and brilliance since The Witcher 3. This really is the ultimate Creed."

Some high praise.
