A group called @LizardSquad is claiming responsibility for the action.
Shacknews is reporting that Battle.net, League of Legends and Grinding Gears’ Path of Exile have also been attacked, although Hearthstone appears to be fully playable at the moment.

INB4 the Sony security sux!

It can happen to any company

is hard to prevent

oh and it sux *ss

it happened on XBL right before the X1 launch.

the same thing is happening to al major gaming infrastructure eve online Ncsoft battle net LOL

Well that didn't take much. HA! To be fair though, this has nothing to really do with Sony's security. As the video tells, a DDoS attack infects other computers and makes them attempt to access Sony's online services all at once to overload Sony's bandwidths through strictly external means.

I cannot connect this morning
oh well
back to the other console
I play my ps4 normally on sundays:(

The people who do this kind of stuff just HAVE to be virgins. I mean...they should be putting their energy elsewhere.

I just logged into battlenet. Just changed password to be safe

DDOS isn't the same thing as PSN in 2011.

Think of a website that goes down from too much traffic, (i.e. gaming forum during E3) and this is something fairly similar.

These guys are just kids, they're gonna get caught and their labeling themselves alongside terrorist organizations won't help them any either.

I was just about to play Left behind having just beat The last if us. It mentioned some Facebook feature that affects the game. Oh well guess I will never know.

I noticed around 2:30 am or so last night just before I put my PS4 in standby mode for the night that my friends list wouldn't show up, I thought it was just some kind of error.

Sony's security does suck. Yes it can happen to any company but also some investment in security harding would make it much harder to carry out these attacks.

I think its safe to assume they attacked all the large gaming services. They just failed to take the others down.

Blizzard, PlayStation Network, and more under wide DDoS attack
By Ozzie Mejia, Aug 24, 2014 2:42am PDT
Several gaming servers have been at the receiving end of DDoS attacks over the past several hours. Blizzard's Battle.net servers, Riot's League of Legends, Grinding Gear Games' Path of Exile, and PlayStation Network are among those under attack by a group of hackers calling themselves Lizard Squad.

Several tweets have gone up throughout Saturday evening, in which Lizard Squad has taken responsibility for the attacks. The group started with Blizzard's servers that include Hearthstone, Diablo 3, World of Warcraft and others. The group quickly spread to League of Legends and Path of Exile before deciding to spread their terror to PlayStation Network. The latter's outage is not related to the scheduled maintenance set to begin Monday morning.

Amazing how in this day and age, DDoS attacks are still around. Probably among the first tactics ever created by internet troublemakers.

And for those unprepared companies, it still actually works.

It has happened to Xbox live as well Intellivision so I guess MS can be lumped in with those unprepared companies huh?

I wonder why people bother to do these things.
One view is that these PC gurus do it for the challenge of trying to crack security and stick it to the man (typically big corporation sites).

Personally, I have a hard time believing a group of people would sit there all day trying to crack a safe with no intention of robbing the vault.... like credit card number stealers.

There's got to be some monetary payoff somewhere in there.

Really? When? I've been an Xbox subscriber since around 2006 and the only noticeable shoddy online performance (for any reason) was X-mas 2007 when CoD 4 was ruling the roost and for a bunch of days (for some people a week), getting onto an online game was hit and miss. You had to keep trying it and hope you got lucky and it worked.

I think the X-mas 2007 issue was due to CoD 4.

Xbox live is down too? Man, I was going to play Diablo later because my Ps4 is down.

edit: Nevermind, you were just lumping live in with psn.....woops! ;)

They have had issues but this isn't because of bad security.
Is that a fact? Because I think not.

They are susceptible to ddos purely and simply because of security. I work in area so this isn't some armchair analysis I'm throwing around.

Then you should know that everybody is susceptible to DDOS attacks.
Which makes you saying its because of bad security point moot.
