(Back up now) PSN and others are offline at the time of writing, apparently thanks to a DDOS attack.

Then you should know that everybody is susceptible to DDOS attacks.
Which makes you saying its because of bad security point moot.

Jesus dude, talk about circular arguing...

Yes I do know every company with an online presence is subscepible to it. I also know the more money you spend in the area and the more attention you give it, the less susceptible you are. Sony are obviously not invested in this area and it shows, hence their security hardening is sub par.
I'm not making this a fanboy thing. I'd say the same thing about any other company with a big online service that was frequently brought down by ddos

Really? When? I've been an Xbox subscriber since around 2006 and the only noticeable shoddy online performance (for any reason) was X-mas 2007 when CoD 4 was ruling the roost and for a bunch of days (for some people a week), getting onto an online game was hit and miss. You had to keep trying it and hope you got lucky and it worked.

I think the X-mas 2007 issue was due to CoD 4.
I been on live from day one and I never hear any news about this attack on live.

I just tried to turn my PS4 on and it shows the PS symbol then goes to the blue backround and shows nothing of the OS.:( I hope this crap has not f***ed my saves or my PS4 up!

Any one else heard that Xbox Live is now being hit by a DDOS attack also? Just wondering if true or just tards spreading rumors.

The hacker that is responsible for PSN hack said Xbox is next, I'm sure that he already tried many times before.

I have read some people have gone into safe mode (i think you hold the power button down for some duration, i don't recall the procedure), then in safe mode went to settings and then disconnect from internet. I frankly would just wait until the problem is under control and sort it out then to remove that variable.

I don't have a PS4, but have you tried unplugging your Ethernet or disabling the wifi and then starting your console offline?

It started working again after I restarted it a few times.:)

Xbox live has been hit with DDOS attacks on more than one occasion, MS was able to get things sorted fairly quickly. I believe it happened in 2009 as well as 2013 and one other time if I'm remembering correctly. Also to be clear I wasn't saying it was happening now with Xbox live, I said it has happened with it before.

what? You guys are crazy, I never heard any issues with this DDOS attack. The only time I remember they had trouble with their service was when MW2 came out.

You guys are crazy.

One view is that these PC gurus do it for the challenge of trying to crack security and stick it to the man (typically big corporation sites).

Personally, I have a hard time believing a group of people would sit there all day trying to crack a safe with no intention of robbing the vault.... like credit card number stealers.

There's got to be some monetary payoff somewhere in there.

We are talking about pre-pubescent teenagers on mom's computer here. They do it for fun!

PlayStation Network Update
Posted by Sid Shuman on Aug 24, 2014 // Senior Manager, Social Media

Like other major networks around the world, the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic.

Although this has impacted your ability to access our network and enjoy our services, no personal information has been accessed.

We will continue to work towards fixing this issue and hope to have our services up and running as soon as possible.

We regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

The twitter stuff is pretty damned funny.

I see people in here saying it was just a ddos attack, this twitter feed says much more than that.

I don't see how it is funny that some ass is doing this no matter the type of attack.

If this is true then it just backfired :
