Kind of thinking about restarting the game, as I've only beaten the first boss so far. I was reading someone talking about weapons later in the game so I checked out a list and based on what sounds interesting I may want to go a different route starting out. I started with military veteran but may want a bit more in bloodtinge.
Surprisingly I had the least amount of issues with Amelia. I beat her 2nd try no issues. I didn't even try the first time because I came across her before BSB, and I was confused. BSB, on the other hand, ugh. That was a struggle.
Hunter Axe for ranged melee, Tonitrus for close melee and for firearms I just use Hunter pistol (I more use firearms as backup).
You'll get loads of blood gems for leveling weapons so I wouldn't worry about it. I have the kirk hammer at +3 and the saw at +3 and I still have around 50 blood gems in storage
Well the range of the hunter axed has sow far helped me on a lot of the bosses, when you get to the forest there is a lot of crafting materials to be found, I upgraded the axe to level 6, and the ranged strong damage are sending most enemies flying, I did try the Holy Blade, but does not work as well at groups of enemies and I feel the swing attack is needed.
Also with the hunter axe I can easy reach places on a boss that would be harder to hit else, but it is all about how close you are to the boss and the weak spots.
Tonitrus I have even leveled up more, are at level 9 with that one and works very well on enemies and later bosses.
Could also explorer the Chalice dungeons for crafting material, on some of the deeper levels should be able to find.

You unlock all the weapons fairly quickly so I wouldn't bother to reset based solely on that. The pistol has great range but the blunderbus has a great stun mechanic.
The pistol has the stun ability too, correct?
Extremely random question:
When you look at this game in your PS4 home screen and drop down into the "overview" of the game, is there a background image of the game for you? This is one of those few games where there's no picture for me, just making sure it's for everyone, and not an installation issue on my side.
The pistol more staggers than stuns. Overall i think I prefer the pistol simply based on the range.
I'll check the overview image when I'm on again and let you know.
night mare frontier is the biggest load of bulls***. ive had to fight two human hunters at once, whilst simultaneously fighting AI wolves who im certain couldnt spot the other hunters, only me. then theres the poison rivers, the rocks at kill you in one hit, the enemy who drains 3/4 of your health just by looking at you, then the boss fight. and if you die once, bac to the start. and not only that, but i've used up all of my vials so i ned to farm before i can even try again. goddamit
Damn, I thought I found a cheese move against the dude at the Graveyard, Father something or other. I'm chipping away at his health by keeping the gravestones in between the two of us and I'm thinking I got this. Then I get his health to about 50% and he transforms and is able to run right through any obstacles and slay me. RAWWWWR! 
Started over last night going milquetoast and hunter axe. My first character was military veteran but I wanted a more level start for all stats. And watching video of the axe looked awesome as hell.
