Cliff Bleszinski "coming out of retirement", promises announcement this week

Anyone else think this guy is a complete fraud? He gets credit for stuff that he had little to do with.

I don't know. Being responsible for the second biggest console launch window game of all time in Gears of War back in 2006 is pretty legit.

I really question how much he really had to do with that game honestly. Not that it was really anything special. Really just an Unreal Engine exhibit.

It was one of the best video game experiences, ever.
I found it boring and never played past the first few hours of the first. Complete derivative garbage if you ask me. It looked nice for sure. I was a huge fan of Unreal Tournament though, but I find Cliffy's involvement there to be overstated.

I have no idea what Cliffy's contributions to those franchises were. Do you know more about his day to day involvement then the rest of us Jester?

I guess you're not much of a multiplayer fan then. Which would explain your preference for the PS brand.

Gears of War was my defining experience as a gamer. I've played everything during my 24 years of gaming. Mario, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, GTA, Halo. Name a big franchise and i'll tell you about a memorable experience i've had with it. Nothing tops Gears of War multiplayer for me. That game got me behind the Xbox 360. It made me a competitive gamer. It's the only game i could play for 5+ hours straight and not have to take a break. Stayed up until all hours of the night playing the multiplayer. Oh and did i mention i had an absolute blast with the Co-op as well? The game was the total package and it was Cliff's vision that brought it to life. Bleszinski is to Gears as Miyamoto is to Mario. Gears of War was as important to the 360's popularity as Halo: CE was to the original Xbox. Those are undeniable facts.

No, but I have read up quite a bit on the history of Unreal/Epic games, and I think he is at the very least, overrated.

I wouldn't say that at all. Like I said, I come from the old school Quake/UT era of MP and at the time I was a huge Halo MP fan, but I just found Gears to be mediocre and completely forgettable. If I have bias here at all, it has nothing to do with MP or platform, but possibly with third person shooters. I'll be honest about that (though I have enjoyed many). Regardless, I think Cliffy is a clown.

I've never really read up or researched his involvement with UT2K4 but I do remember when the game first came out my clan and a bunch of other people played that game mode (forgot what it was called) that's like that game "The Hidden", one monster vs. 7 other players. We had a blast, he was fun to play with and gracious.

He also told us he really enjoyed playing with us because we played and didn't spam him with questions about the game.

Never played with him again though, was sad about that.

As I said, I never read up or researched it, but I'll take your word for it. Still he had some part in it and he was active with the players at least for a little while when it first came out, so I like him for that.

You started your online competitive 'career' on a game with netcode so broken that the host won 99% of the time? A game with netcode so broken they busted their ass with GoW2 to correct it and made what is arguably one of the worst online PvP MP games in all history?

That explains a LOT, actually.

That's cool, and I've had experiences with devs very much the same that have swayed my opinion the other way. Perhaps I'm wrong about him, or maybe I'm he once had something to offer, but for too long he has come across as someone riding a past legacy with nothing new to offer the industry.

You seriously going to put down Quake and UT in one post as if they didn't define a genre? That's just sad. I have never experienced to this day, the same level of competitiveness or skill required in an FPS. That is truth.

No, i actually started it on Counter Strike for PC and it made me realize how overrated the PC platform and multiplayer gaming on the platform was. Gears of War is the most competitive game of all time. It actually takes teamwork. No hero ball like with Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Titanfall, or other games.

Read my post history. Not as much here, but all the time at TXB I said the exact same thing. No game since UT2K4 (not even UT3 IMO) comes close to the technical and strategic skill required to be good, let alone great or amazing as Quake/UT required.

I was talking about Gears. While it takes more skill that your typical 3rd person shooter (wall bouncing and such), the netcode was broken as f*ck. When my friends and I had friendly tournaments it was 3v3 with the host hiding in an "off limits" corner of the map. It was easier than going back and forth between hosts.

BTW, when it comes to Quake and Unreal there's one thing that NO ONE EVER complained about.

Netcode.

it just never happened, because people were expected to learn to compensate for latency on their own, without their hands being held. The only real problem I remember from either Quake or Unreal is that the UT2K games had an issue where sometimes (VERY, VERY rarely) your flak shells or rockets would not do damage on a direct hit.

You must not play much BF. Any squad or team that doesn't play together loses, every. single. time.

OK, I guess I had a moment of stupid and complete misunderstood your post. Seems like we are on the same page.

Respect.

Former Epic Games developer and Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski will unveil his latest work on Tuesday, July 8.

Stop man

I'd say that Gears of War was a defining moment in last gen games, to me, it was the game that said to me, now this truly (at the time) Next gen.

Gears of War had completely broken netcode up until they did dedicated servers in GoW3.

It's impossible for everyone to like the same game. You may think it was "garbage" but the fact that enough people liked it and it was enough to pull a few million sales, it was enough to be consider one of the best exclusives on any console.

I'm sure there's plenty of games that have sold millions and millions of copies that I didn't find interesting taste-wise but I won't put them down and say they are garbage.

Hell, I'm sure many people can call your taste in games "garbage" because they like other games... Does that justify them calling your taste garbage?

No, it sounds ridiculous. That's how you sound right now.

Cliff's vision for Gears is what made it a blockbuster franchise. Without his design leadership, it could have been a "Ryse", where it's generationally defining in terms of visuals for it's day, but it's not a breakout blockbuster due to gameplay shortcomings.

I'm looking forward to what he's doing next. :-)

This just in, Gears of War 1 wasn't exclusive.

Gears of War on the PC was f*cking awesome and it was 60FPS on my 8800GT. Gears of War 2 and so on didn't impress me as much on the 360. Frankly, if they were ported on the PC, my opinion wouldn't change.

Cliff Bleszinski's new studio appears to be Boss Key Productions
http://www.videogamer.com/news/cliff_bleszinskis_new_studio_appears_to_be_boss_key_productions.html

Cliff Bleszinski's new studio seems to have been revealed as Boss Key Productions.
While the new studio has yet to be formally announced by Bleszinski himself, the studio's alleged website links to his Twitter account and features the same logo worn on a T-shirt by the designer earlier in the week.
All Games Beta also appears to have uncovered information about the company's registration, which has allegedly been active under Bleszinski's name since April 30.
Boss Key's first game seems to be called 'Project Bluestreak', although whether it's linked to earlier concept art remains unknown.
Bleszinski is expected to formally announce Boss Key Productions next Tuesday, July 8.

Title: Cliffy B says his next game will be a PC-only first person arena shooter

Heard it on Kevin Pereira's podcast on iTunes today, interesting listen.
www.deathsquad.tv/category/kevin-pereira-pointless/

Other tidbits...

-He can't talk in detail about the Epic split, but is still on good terms with some of them.
-Says he's ready to get back in the game and start his own studio.
-Hopes to use Unreal engine.
-Wants to get back to his roots with this project.
-He also speaks highly of the Oculus so the game will probably have support for that.
-Just speculation on my part for this, but I think Kickstarter might be the route he will go.

Curbstomp if old.

I actually just fired up Gears of War on PC the other day. 60fps and 1080p glory.

Boss Key production. LOL He must have spend a lot of time on thinking about the name of his company........not.

That's true. I guess I was just speaking from a console only gamer perspective. I'm pretty sure there's plenty of people who only play on consoles.

That doesn't take away the fact that the game is on PC aswell it's just hard to remember about that when us console gamers use PC for other stuff not related to gaming.

But going back to the topic, Gears of war was a beast of a game in its own unique way. Never played it on PC but I'm guessing it's just as fun as the console version with better graphics.
