What I worry about Cuphead is this. If it didn't have this specific art direction, would people still be going nuts over it?
I don't know but it looks to have better gameplay than half the games out there. I've been wanting a game to look like this since games were played like this (80s). As long as the gameplay is tight, it's kind hard to complain about the art direction being "too perfect".

No, I'm not suggesting that the art direction is "too perfect".

I'm suggesting that maybe people are overlooking merely adequate gameplay because the art direction is so good.

You don't exactly play art direction.

You don't exactly play good graphics in any game. Why exactly is your concern different than any game ever made with good graphics? I really don't get it. Every single preview mentions the gameplay being tight and also the developers studied various 8 bit games and took the best of their gameplay.

Well, there are some games that have both good graphics and good, innovative gameplay.

From what I've seen of Cuphead, the gameplay may not be good/innovative. It may merely be OK.

That's all I'm saying.

Ok, I see. Well, I wouldn't know if it's innovative. To me, gameplay just has to be a little different every game; not too easy, not too frustrating, and tight enough where I feel like it isn't alway the game's fault I just died. :)

If the gameplay is truly quality and most of the innovation is in the art direction, I'm more than fine with that. I've loved quite a few games (like Psychonauts) that weren't nearly as innovative with the gameplay as the art direction.

There will be some replayability as the dev said they will randomize boss attacks, so it's not so predictable like typical side shooters. Of course, there's only so many attacks a boss will do, but at least adjusting the sequences of them will make it more varied.

It's a shame that so many side scrollers from the old 16-bit days had such predictable bosses. The devs put so much effort into visuals and big models, but the attacks are often junk and easy to memorize. And even worse is that many shooters were too forgiving. Some bosses would crawl onto the screen, letting you zap them with 50 shots before it even moves. By the time it does move, it's could already be 75% dead.

It's a boss fight. Make it so both gamer and boss start fighting at the same time.

Never understood why devs made bosses so easy back in the day. Just increase the boss health and randomize the attacks better and the fights will be more interesting and challenging.

I think most of us that grew up playing tough side scrollers have been waiting for a game like this. Ori is the closest thing to it I've played in awhile, but I spent a large part of my gaming childhood on Contra, Blaster Master, Ghouls, etc. This game looks to fit right in.
The art direction is just the icing on the cake for me personally. I love those old cartoons and these guys nailed it from what I've seen.
I was really hoping for a 2015 release though :/. But as with any game, I'd rather they take their time and get it right.

This game reminds me of the cartoons they used to run during Intermissions when the Allman Brothers played at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan.

It was during March madness when they'd play 20+ shows during the month of March. Always had these super trippy 1930's cartoons playing during the intermission which was very similar to the Cuphead style

Don't play this game in co-op. Bosses get like double health in co-op.

Also, most vids don't show the players using power-ups, or slap jumping pink projectiles.

Yeah, those bosses are going to piss me off. I'm almost hesitant on getting it. I love everything about it accept the frustrating boss fights.

Starting to feel the same way. The game looks so fun and original but if I find myself frustrated and stuck on the 1st or 2nd boss then I won't even get to enjoy most of it plus have to buy a new controller.

I am slightly worried that it'll be too hard for me.
