Destiny, new trailer and screens for Bungie's epic title.

The more I see of this game the more I worry it will suck. Bungie just come across as a bunch of pretentious a******s.

I'll never understand gamers who play games to... see a story.

You must not be an RPG gamer. :p

Video games are a storytelling medium just like books or movies. They're just interactive. But there are games for people who don't care about stories, too. That's why dudebro shooters like Call of Duty exist.

OR fighting games.

Then again, look at Mortal Kombat, they made a big deal about the story mode before the game released. So I guess it's more important than some would admit.

@Freezasaurus : So play it because it's fun and don't worry if you end up not finishing the entire 10 year series?

No, you're right about fighters. Most of them have a bare-bones story to simply accommodate the characters with a reason to fight. Very few fighting games have truly fleshed-out plots for individual characters. Mortal Kombat is an exception to this, as you said, but the story for Mortal Kombat was pretty simplistic at first. It's been built up over a number of years with each game. I would also say that Blazblue has a solid [read: complicated] story. Arc System Works usually puts effort into the stories for their fighters.

Errr.. I just put another 50 hours into Fallout New Vegas... after spending another 100 hours on Skyrim.. starting up another Fallout 3 play.

But those are WRPG's.. they aren't about "seeing a story." It's about being a part of a world that changes based on your actions.. developing your characters stats, and yeah.. the actual gameplay.

I like games with stories, I'm just saying that it's not "why I play".. and certainly isn't why the majority of people PLAY videoGAMES.

lol@insulting people who play games without stories though.. I must be a Dubebro because I enjoy competition.

;)

Haha, convo is all in good fun, but the "I play games to see what happens next in a story!" .. "gamers".. sort of kill me.

I watch all kinds of films.. ones many people find boring.. I read lots of books.. I find both of those mediums far superior for storytelling. Games should first and foremost be about gameplay.. a game that is mostly story is... barely a game.

Where was the insult? I said "But there are games for people who don't care about stories, too. That's why dudebro shooters like Call of Duty exist." No insults present. Was I being condescending? Absolutely. ;)

I didn't mean to imply that stories are the only reason to play games, but they're definitely important to give the player motivation. Some games are just mindless fun, but I think most of them need to provide the player with some reason for doing what they're doing. No matter how flimsy it may be.

I agree, gameplay is very important. But there are games out there with good gameplay that you would still probably consider "barely a game". Asura's Wrath, Heavy Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls are IMO, fantastic, but none of them are really too much more than massive QTE's. And that's fine, because the developers of those games chose to focus on telling an elaborate story that would be hampered by too much player interaction. And there's an audience for games like that just the same as CoD has its audience.

Well you made a rather extreme comment; that you would forgo playing one of the most awesome looking games of next gen because you can't handle the idea of it taking a decade to get to the end of the story.

And I really whole heartedly disagree with that statement anyways. So does... reality.

Do you need a story to play chess? Is chess "mindless" because there is no story? Is basketball mindless because there is no story? Tetris?

What makes something "not mindless" because you watch a story in between gameplay segments? You think watching a story happen is somehow the opposite of mindless? Really seems.. backwards.. there's nothing more mindless than passively observing something when it comes to gaming.

That's my problem with a large portion of "gamers" on the internet. They have this bizarre pretentious attitude towards games.

I'm not saying there isn't an audience for them. I'm simply saying that for my personal tastes story is not the primrary reason I play games.. and furthermore, that the evidence doesn't support the idea that the majority of people "play games to watch the story." Which generically I'd take to mean "story is the most important motivating factor."

It's fine that some people think story is the most important.. I do not understand why these people feel the need to act like their opinion is somehow better.. or why these people can't recognize that the medium they are discussing is not primarily about story.

It's cool that gaming offers lots of hybrid experiences, but it's still gaming.

And a "Gamer" who decides not to play a game over anxiety over having to wait until sequels to see the end of a story... confuses the hell out of me.

But have you seen Titanfall? :tounge:

Seriously though, Destiny looks like it's going to be f'n amazing. I don't see anything else coming out in the near future that comes close to it.

What it comes down to is the MMO aspect of the game. They really aren't my cup of tea. I'm fine with games that have multiplayer components, but not games that hinge entirely on multiplayer.
