Where was the insult? I said
"But there are games for people who don't care about stories, too. That's why dudebro shooters like Call of Duty exist." No insults present. Was I being condescending? Absolutely.
Errr.. being condescending is insulting
I didn't mean to imply that stories are the only reason to play games, but they're definitely important to give the player motivation. Some games are just mindless fun, but I think most of them need to provide the player with some reason for doing what they're doing. No matter how flimsy it may be.
Well you made a rather extreme comment; that you would forgo playing one of the most awesome looking games of next gen because you can't handle the idea of it taking a decade to get to the end of the story.
And I really whole heartedly disagree with that statement anyways. So does... reality.
Do you need a story to play chess? Is chess "mindless" because there is no story? Is basketball mindless because there is no story? Tetris?
What makes something "not mindless" because you watch a story in between gameplay segments? You think watching a story happen is somehow the opposite of mindless? Really seems.. backwards.. there's nothing more mindless than passively observing something when it comes to gaming.
That's my problem with a large portion of "gamers" on the internet. They have this bizarre pretentious attitude towards games.
I agree, gameplay is very important. But there are games out there with good gameplay that you would still probably consider "barely a game". Asura's Wrath, Heavy Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls are IMO, fantastic, but none of them are really too much more than massive QTE's. And that's fine, because the developers of those games chose to focus on telling an elaborate story that would be hampered by too much player interaction. And there's an audience for games like that just the same as CoD has its audience.
I'm not saying there isn't an audience for them. I'm simply saying that for my personal tastes story is not the primrary reason I play games.. and furthermore, that the evidence doesn't support the idea that the majority of people "play games to watch the story." Which generically I'd take to mean "story is the most important motivating factor."
It's fine that some people think story is the most important.. I do not understand why these people feel the need to act like their opinion is somehow better.. or why these people can't recognize that the medium they are discussing is not primarily about story.
It's cool that gaming offers lots of hybrid experiences, but it's still gaming.
And a "Gamer" who decides not to play a game over anxiety over having to wait until sequels to see the end of a story... confuses the hell out of me.
