Destiny record breaking budget

Wow, I'm not sure if Destiny can reach those goals personally. I find it very rare for a new IP to be so successful on the first go without some kind of bundling. It's usually successful IP first and then big budget sequels.

Yeah a goal of 16 million copies at $60 each is crazy

Well it really depends on how many games are going to be in the series, if its 4 then it's a bit more attainable goal of around 4 million per game.

The $500 million isn't for each game, prolly dev. of the initial game/infrastructure/marketing etc...costs will (hopefully) only go down once the first game is out of the gate.

Still a pretty high margin for failure though. Hopefully Bungie can curate a good fan base that will travel from game to game.

$500 million is THEIR COST. Then there is a COST (physical product shipped to retail) for each game sold. So you can't even count $60 for each game, but probably closer to $20.00 profit on a game with a new release price (not accounting for price drop).

They would need to sell 25 million copies of Destiny (1-x?), AT $20.00 per game JUST to pay for the $500,000,000 investment. We haven't crossed into a PROFIT for their pocket yet!

It sounds like the $500 million is all inclusive.

A company spokesperson said on Monday the number was accurate but also included marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties and other costs.

& its not available on PC....

I expect lots of DLCs, & mircotranistion then.

No, they can say whatever budget they want and cut it up into DLC. Cause remember, budgets justify DLC cut from the game. ;)

I feel like this game is going to disappoint. It will still be a good game, but not be what people expected.

Seems like gamers are disappointed in nearly everything nowadays, so I'd say that's a good bet.

And whats really sad, is that most of those kind of people would rather gripe on message boards about games than actually play any. Miserable people love to spread misery.

Yeah. Sometimes, I think I'd enjoy gaming more if I didn't read internet forums. And usually I won't bother to express hope or positive feelings about a game, because I know it'll just be met with contradiction and negativity. Why bother.

It's part of why I enjoy hanging out on the Nintendo subforum, even though I don't own a Wii U. Those guys don't pick everything apart. They just enjoy games.

Does this officially make Activision the new Square-Enix? 500 million is just too much. Sure, they made Halo, but that doesn't make their games worth 500 million. If this game fails, it will destroy Activision even with all of their Call of Duty sales. Destiny will be become the new Final Fantasy: Spirit Within if it isn't an ungodly success.

I would think since Destiny will span 10 years much of the cost of the development for something like this is spent in the beginning with creating a base that can reused over and over with different assets. They could literally do 4 games over 10 years, not to mention DLC revenue. Either way thats crazy monies.

I have read about this game and I'm still not sure what the hell it is. Is it an mmo is it like borderlands is it strictly online or is their single player?

Best hope this sells over 5 million or this will be a financial disaster

There really isn't enough to go on from this game yet. We have no idea of its true scope, its depth, its story, its characters, its world. All weve seen is the same area of game play over and over again since last year. E3 will be this games time to shine, and it really needs to impress. I think the game looks great, but I like many others want to know a lot more about the finer details.

A litte dramatic...the comments.

Some people can play a 5/10 game and enjoy it, some people don't. Same with movies, some people are fine with sub-par movie, with poor effects & cheesy plot, so people don't. There is nothing wrong with having simple expectation, there is also nothing wrong with have higher ones. Doesn't mean we have higher expectation means we are miserable.

If there is a good game, I will buy & play, if there is a good movie, I will watch at cinema. I however, is not the type that goes to the cinema in the weekend, & hope to see a good movie, I go to cinema only when there is a movie I wanted to watch. I know people who do. No one is more right than the other.

If there is not a good movie or game I like to play or watch, I can spend time on other stuff as well. Read a book, do some sport, meet some friends etc.

You would have to be new to the internet, or one of the trolls yourself not to see that this is far from dramatics, its the flat out truth. Look no farther than the constant resolution wars to see that few people care to discuss the merits of a game itself, they'd rather bitch about how one version looks better than the other, or how their system is better than your system. It almost always devolves into that. There are a few threads around here that actually discuss the game itself, and I try to stick to those as much as possible. But, being contrary is par for the course with you, so im not surprised by your dissent to my comments. Its not my fault you cant see whats right in front of you.

The way I understand it is this game will be like a MMO. There won't be a sequel but instead steady content updates. So if this game sells millions of copies and then if most of those gamers purchase content updates regularly then Bungie/Activision stand to make a pretty penny over the course of a few years. Its a huge gamble especially for Activision which doesn't own the IP but Activision is in need of another console cash cow as Call of Duty loses steam with gamers. Its going to be a while before its known if this will be profitable that's for sure.
