Mod note: Let's use this thread as a place to discuss the DS4 controller, including stuff like:

  • your impressions
  • the lightbar
  • the battery
  • the speaker
  • the touchpad
And whatever else.

If you guys didn't know, there are power saving settings in the settings menu, you can choose to turn off your ds4 within 10 minutes of inactivity and your ps4 after an hour if inactivity. Very convenient.

Yea think I have something similar. PS4 might be a little longer than that, unless they fixed it from the PS3. I think my PS3 was set to go off after 3 hours, however if I was watching MLB.tv or NHL GameCenter it would flash a message that the console would turn off soon, even though those apps were running.

Sony really needs to give us a patch so that we can manually turnoff the controller lightbar. I’ve had the XBO for almost two weeks now and have been playing it pretty steadily and have yet to have to replace the controller batteries since I haven’t purchased the battery pack yet. On the flip side I’m lucky if I can get 4 hours of gaming time with my otherwise awesome Dualshock 4 controller.

4 hours? I get at least 8 with mine, are you exaggerating or is something wrong with yours? I do think battery life should be better but 4 hours isn't anywhere near what my experience has been.

I'm around 8 as well. That's definitely less than the DS3. Not the biggest of deals; I never game for more than a few hours without taking a break anyway, but I'd certainly like longer battery life.

Yeah. It doesn't last as much as the DS3 but it's no big deal. Especially since i just picked up my secondary blue controller!

Yes, I was exaggerating and I'm sure my DS4 battery life is in keeping with everyone else. Its just a shame that the new controller holds such a short charge because other than that its great. I like to be able to pick up the controller and game without having to worry about charging. I can charge while I play but that means having an extended wire out for people to trip over or worse pull my system out of the entertainment center. I have faith that Sony will bring a system update to improve the controller battery life. They have a good track record of listening to the community.

The LED's use very little power, the speaker and Touch pad a bit more (dependent on use of course), but that is really not the main reason the battery life is less on the DS4 compared to the DS3. The DS3 has a 1800maH battery and the DS4 has a 1000maH battery. On a plus side, I hear you can fit the DS3 batteries in the DS4 without any modding and increase your life about 6 hours.

I have read that both the 4.2v and the 3.7v work (the DS4 is 3.7v), i haven't tried switching them myself but you can buy both voltage versions i mentioned above thru best buy. They are even on sale. I personally would go with the 3.7v as it might fit better in the DS4 controller, but like i said, i haven't tried it myself.

You can turn the speaker volume all the way down.

What is the point of the speaker ? I can only assume this is meant for things like ambient noises and such to try and enhance the atmospherics within a game ? but does this work ? I would assume not given how it is small and most likely not great sounding, and I also would assume the noises get lost for those who use Home theatre audio set ups.

Kvally gave one example, the KZ audio logs, which I thought was a neat implementation. Knack also used it for the sound effect when gathering trinkets.

That's all I can think of. I have Injustice, COD, BF, AC4, and NFS, and I don't think any of those games utilize it.

Do these sounds only come out of the speaker? what if you use a headset, are those sounds just not there.

I think the speaker lets you hear some parts better because sometimes when you're playing the music and the ambient noises makes it so you can't really hear some parts well. With the speaker, it's more clear. I personally would prefer an option to put it in with the sound or through the controller speaker.

If you use a headset, I believe the sound still comes from the controller but I'm not quite sure on this one because I can still hear the sounds when I'm using a headset so I don't know if it's coming from the headset or the controller, lol.

Speakers are actually really good quality considering their size. I think it works really well in Resogun and even simple additions like playing the notes you pick up in Sound Shapes adds to imersion for me.

I can honestly say that the light hasn't been intrusive in the least. And I game pretty close to the TV most of the time.

Yeah, can't say I've ever been bothered by the lightbar either. Talking about it the other night though, I can only assume it's people playing in dark rooms?

Good solution for people wanting to dial it down though.

Needed some sh!t from Walmart and checked if they had any PS4s. They had nothing. I said screw it and bought a DS4 since i'll need it anyway. Now i'm committed to getting this console no matter what.

Guess i got desperate for something. I hadn't touched the DS4 yet and wanted to see the hype and it delivered. Popped it out of the packaging in the car and was instantly impressed. I love my Xbox One controller but Sony might have just topped them this time around. Talk about a comfortable controller. The DS4 is amazing.
The DS4 destroys the DS3 in every possible way. It's awesome. Not Xbox controller awesome, but as close as you can get.

Welcome aboard the darkside!

DS4 is equal if not better than the 360 controller.
Best controller of all time tho - THE DUKE.

DS4 is the best controller I've ever used, it's light but still feels sturdy and the sticks are awesome, everything is spaced perfectly for me.

Yoshida responded to Keighley on twitter saying he said they'd allow us to dim it not turn it off.

I sent a tweet to Yoshida saying that Sony should allow for us to turn the light off if the game doesn't use it because it's just using up the battery for nothing, he replied (very quickly) that the LED uses very little battery. I tweeted back to him saying that the DS4 seems to have a shorter battery life than the DS3 and he responded again saying that it does but the LED isn't the main reason. I will say this, anytime I have ever tweeted that guy he responds, today he responded both times in less than a minute. The lightbar being on doesn't bother me but it just seems like common sense that if the game isn't making use of it that we should be able to turn it off, not sure why they are so against us having the option to do that.

I see a glare on the TV with my light bar, but I quickly forget about it. I like it on more than off anyway. I like how it shows red when I am getting hit/die in KZ for example.

I have a matte screen tv so I don't really notice any glare anyway and honestly I never noticed the color changes in games like killzone either. I do think it'd be nice to have the option to turn it off but it doesn't bother me or anything.

Really? I was thinking it would have to a trigger in the controller to let you do that.

I'm shocked someone has not opened up the controller and unhooked the light and see if the battery lasts longer. Maybe somebody already tried that.
