EDGE: Xbox, why? The baffling incompetence of the Xbox One interface

Xbox One Users Complaining About UI Slowdown, Happening Due To Memory Dump Issue

The Xbox One’s main claim to fame, aside from a ton of about-turns in its key policies, is the new interface which allows you to seamlessly transition from playing games to watching movies and other functions, all within a second. This interface seems to be having problems lately though. A thread on Reddit has reported that lately, the UI tends to slow down after enough time is spent using it.

One user suggested that you should, “Just hold power button for 10 seconds. Xbox One has a memory dump issue that’s been reported.” Some have reported this as ineffective though. Another suggestion was that, “You can also change your power setting to power saving. That way, when you turn off your console, it’s a full shut down; not a hibernating mode you get with the instant on option. Then, when you turn on the console afterwards, the stuttering should be gone.”

It’s not just Reddit users – even media figures on Twitter have reported issues, including The Verge’s deputy managing editor Chris Ziegler.

Hasn't happened to me, at least not yet but when it happens to guys in the gaming media it can be bad.

Happened to me when I was first using the XBO.. that combined with having download speed issues really turned me off to the device.

Waited a week.. re-grouped... checked all my network settings.. upgraded from one amazing router to an even more amazinger router.

Now I'm happy as a clam and generally my XBO has been functioning great. I do think it's fairly quirky from a design perspective and think MS has their work cut out for them but it's trying to do quite a bit more than the competition, and it's a closed platform so there's zero reason to suspect they can't solve all issues.

Good grief. How stupid are some of these people who own the system? Unplug it? Just reboot it. You wonder what these morons do when they have computer problems? A good reboot normally fixes just about any electronic device.

Default XBO setting (and desirable setting) is to have the device hybernate into low power mode not "turn off" when you re-boot.

So no, that doesn't really work.

I had to go into settings, change my power mode to "completely turn off".. turn off the system.. then go back into settings and change my power mode back to the normal one. Kind of a pain.. but I could have just unplugged it as well. Didn't want to risk that screwing something up though.

Not very user friendly either way.. why are you insulting people who are having problems with their XBox without even thinking it through though?

Sorry, but if you unplugged your computer every time you had an issue, you would be deemed a r****d. Also I assume the XBOX ONE has a power button like every other console in the history of gaming? Unplug it? LOL! Sounds like a last resort thing to do. Simple thing to do is power off, power on. If your power button doesn't work, then yes, by all means, unplug the thing, but from what I'm reading, that isn't the case.

My post also wasn't for those on this forum, but the journalist acting as if they can't push a button.

Hitting the power button does whatever your power saving mode is set to.

Which by default doesn't completely turn it off, and doesn't solve the memory leak problem.

But keep LOL'ing and insulting random people on the internet and making bad "assumptions" ;)

I think the best thing to do is to post when you know what you are talking about, and to not post when you don't. But that's just me!

Unlike the PS4, the XBox One doesn't give you an easy way to completely power down.. you have to change a setting.. or you can pull the plug, which is easier.

OMG! You have to change a setting. Alert the Secret Service and Army. LMAO! That along with powering down is hell of a lot easier than unplugging the thing.

Sounds like you and the journalist are doing what you do best. Making a mountain out of a mole hill. Of course you are upset that I'm calling you out and labeling you morons along the way. What else is new.

Not if your console is running dog slow at 1 frames per second.. and it's not obvious. You have to dig into the systems menu.

I'm not trying to make a huge deal out of it.. it would just be a nice option. PS4 puts the option to go to standby vs. full power off right in the menu when you hold down the PS button..hold down the XBO button and you get a misleading "Turn system off" option that actually puts it in standby.

You have issues dude. Making a mountain out of a mole hill?

I'm just being like.. factual.. and correct.. your welcome for educating you and helping you not spout nonsense?

As I said it's been smooth sailing since my initial experience and I expect it all to be ironed out within a few months. That's not a mountain out of a mole hill.. rather ironic because you are making such a big deal out of this that you are spouting off mis-info and then instead of calmly thanking the person informing you of things you are trying to insult them.

I like this guy; he's silly! It's hard to keep a straight face when you're being insulted by such a clown. Exactly how hard is it, anyway, to completely power down the console with out unplugging it?

Hold finger on "power" button for five seconds. It kills power and turns Xbox One off completely like a PC.

I noticed a small issue with the memory dump, however the home screen dumps upon reboot or softboot. I only really notice it after multiple downloads and a large group of programs in the background.
