EDGE: Xbox, why? The baffling incompetence of the Xbox One interface

Oh, I just love the "some my best friends are on xbox live line" talk about lame. I got a twx for you pal: I diasgree with you're point of view, and I'll say as often as I feel like.

What the heck are you even talking about? How is that lame? I have several family and real life friends that play Xbox Live and also have some online friends that I have played with on Xbox Live since 2003 and that I would like to continue to use the Xbox One to play games with them, though my experience is less enjoyable right now due to UI issues.

What is my point of view that you even disagree with? Do you not have friends?

Yes, and they'd think me quite peculiar if I was carrying on so about their favorite console in a public forum, as are you. The point is, a lot what you don't like about the UI, others like immensely. On the other hand, there is no doubt there is great room for improvement, and many of your points ARE valid. Sometimes we just need to pull back and remember that we are communicating with other human beings who have feelings. Sometime we are all little too harsh.

1.)I could care less what it looks like and besides it goes against your argumant as you obviosly have a bias against it before it even came out. The question is can I get to point A to point B in a very fast effieciant way. I say you can if you put the effort into it and put the pins where you need a learn the finer details of the system. You can make your friends list into a "list" and view this at the same time as you view your "Achievments" or at the same time you are playing a game and you can do this in 3 clicks with a controller. It comes up instant also.
2.) They do have the guide button...it's called the home button and enstead of being able to do 5-10 things fast...I can do 50 things fast.
3.) I don't have the PS4 but if the UI is basically the same as the ps3 version than the xbox one version runs rings around that UI when it comes to going from point A to B to C.

Look...I have no problem with people wanting what they personally want and the UI needs some changes but when people say they can't find their friends fast and can't navigate fast than I call bullsh1t...because you can...period.

Lets talk about why we can't see who we just played against and how in the fuk do we rate them and things of that nature but to go from"it doesn't show battery life" to now the UI is garbage cause I can't fukin see my achievments fast enough is fukin bullsh1t.

1.) So you do care or do you mean you couldn't care less? How do I have a bias? I bought the Xbox One at launch, have played all third party games exclusively on the Xbox and Xbox 360 since 2001. I've been a member of Teamxbox and Xbox Live since 2003. I hope both platforms succeed, because that is what is best for gaming and competition. I've spent more time trying to learn the interface than I have of any console before it.

Your argument over and over again seems to be that we all need to learn the system better. I have. I've played around with pinning things and trying to alter the friends lists. If people are having trouble learning the system, how is this ever going to break into the mainstream like Microsoft wants it to?

Please explain how to make a friends list into a list form. When I go to ' Change View' it provides no such option. Thanks.

2.) Guide button seems to be more efficient to me. I can hit bumbers and scroll quickly among 50 different things rather than launching a bunch of different apps.

3.) So you haven't played the PS4? You don't even know what its interface is like? The whole 'Btw...I can see my friends list as fast as the ps4 and play the game while looking at it.... fyi.' that you said in a previous post was a lie? You have no idea about how the Xbox One interface compares to the PS4's or how quick it is to access your friends list on the PS4?

You sir, have lost all credibility. Thanks. Bye.

Eh it's entertaining. Though you do make a good point. Both sides can be a little harsh.

I try to keep it nice, but I do get a bit frustrated when people act like I am an idiot, a fool, have a bias, or have no idea what I'm talking about when I voice some of my concerns about some of my disappointments with Xbox One or the even PS4.

Am I more critical of the Xbox One? Sure. But it's because I have played nearly exclusively on the Xbox and Xbox 360 for 12 years now and felt that they were fantastic platforms and now I feel that Microsoft and the Xbox team have been screwing up some things over the past couple of years and have lost some of their touch and direction.

You have a bias against the UI before you even bought the system......you know ...when you said you didn't like the tyles...universally hated and so on and so on....did you expect it to change when you seen the videos before you bought the system. I've bought every system that has ever been made(as far as I know) and will buy the ps4 and I have played the ps4 but I haven't had a indepth look at the UI..people say it is like the ps3 version so thats what I based it on. Your the one that brought system versus system into the conversation .

What kinda credibility do you have when you can't even figure out how to get your friends in list form on your xbox one?

Just have little faith; it has to get better. I wasn't exactly fond of the original blades on the 360 and was totally pissed that it was three years before we could open up chatrooms on the 360, something we took for granted on the old Box, so believe me, I feel your pain. Sometimes, in the heat of the discussion, we wind up talking at each other instead of to each and we miss something useful, like say--a clever work-around, the other is suggesting.

So, a game console is luxury and a $500 Smart Phone with functions that go way beyond conceivable necessity is not. A game console is an unnecessary luxury? Well, if one is willing to blow $400+ on mere frivolity...what's a hundred dollars more? Seriously, anyone that thinks a hundred dollars is a lot money, shouldn't be wasting their time and resources on video games, period. Somehow, though, I think you'd be making the exact same points, if the Xbox One was $400 and the PS4 was three hundred, wouldn't you?

For some people it is their ONLY phone and the extras are a great way for them to keep connected to their world. Yes, that makes it a much greater necessity than any console and the expense more easily justifiable. I've never heard of anyone running to their console to call the police or an ambulance. For most a phone is an absolute necessity and a console is a luxury item meant for entertainment. I'd be making that same point if the PS4 was 600 and the Xbone was 300.

Well I hope those poor, pitiful people lugging around garish lumps of foam and plastic incasing $600 dollar iPHONES, refrain from wasting any money on video games.

I think you need to look up the definition of bias. Sure I'm not a fan of the tiles or metro interface, doesn't mean I have a bias against the One. I'm also not thrilled by the PS4's interface, doesn't mean I have a bias against it either.

I realize that both are works in progress, however, it doesn't mean I can't make reasonable critiques about what I think the system needs to improve on. MS made extremely drastic changes to its Xbox 360 UI, they will do the same to the Xbox One's if they get enough feedback.

I brought the PS4 into this, because after playing the PS4 first and experiencing the smoother transition between different programs, I want this for the Xbox One as well. Microsoft after all is a software company, I hope they can improve on this. That still doesn't change the fact that you are just making things up as you go. First you claim you know exactly how long it takes to access the PS4's friends list, then say you don't even know what the PS4's UI is like, then you claim you played the PS4? Which is it? You were caught red handed making up lies.

I don't care how long you had been a member at teamxbox. This isn't a d*ck measuring contest. You said I had a bias against the Xbox One, I was providing you with examples of why that's simply not true.

And lastly, please explain how you can get your friends list into list form like the Xbox 360's. Or are you making that up too? Are you going to also tell me that there is a way to send voice messages and view recent players as well?

I didn't say you have a bias against the one...you have a bias against the metro style....you basically said this yourself. I don't fully know what the UI is like...only played the PS4 at best buy and only got a little bit of feal for the UI. I don't want to put them up against each other cause you have to work with the UI before you can say one or the other is better but I have seen on the interwebs that the ps4 is alot like the ps3(even seen people make the same "why can't it be more like the ps3 version" comments. I have seen how long it takes to get the friends list up on youtube. I know how long it takes for me to get my friends list up.

I have b1tched about the not being able to view recent players and not being able to send voice messages...in this thread.

You go to friends app off of home page...click on your friends...you than make them favorites...you can make all of them favorites. you then can right click from there to see your 'favorite" friends and weed them out of your activity feed. After you have your favorite frieds you can say 'xbox snap activity"and your favorite friends will show in list form and show whos online and off. will also show what games theyplay/played last and you can click on their names to go to their profile and see gamerscore/achievments what not. Now if you make activities your first 'pin" you go home button, left bumper and A that fast and see your friends list on whos onlin and whos off and it's instant...it doesn't load like and app.
If you want to usethe controller to see friends list you hit home right clcik a and it comes up.

Give this a try Titan, and let me know how it works, and don't be bashful about asking for help. The begining of wisdom is the ability to say three simple words: I...don't...know, and you two try to be friends, Cody, you've got a lot in common and neither one you know's how to back down gracefully, so I'm doing it for you. Help each other.

No problem man, I was being an ahole too. It's easy to get caught up in the moment and forget we are just arguing about a gaming console. Everyone has different experiences, some good, some ok, some not so good. Hopefully in all cases, it will approve across the board as the gen moves on and everyone will be satisfied with their purchase. Agreed to move on.

Tell me what you think of the way I got the friends list in activity..... it isn't exactly like the 360 but you can see it in list form and you can see who is online while your playing. It also come up instant unlike when you click on friends on your home page.

I think the point that you are missing is that many think they shouldn't have how to get your friends list up explained to them and the fact that they do, they find that frustrating. It should have been obvious and instinctive. The fact that you need a tutorial is poor planning and demonstrates a UI that isn't based on simplicity and what their customer base had grown accustomed. Who wants "homework" after spending 500 on an entertainment device to figure out the UI, and who thought their customers would? It seems an odd choice. Parts of the old UI should have been an option right out of the gate if the customer chose to not use Kinect.
You shouldn't condition your customers to interact with your device in a specific way for 8 years and then yank the rug out from under them and expect to be received with bouquets of roses. It was short sighted. There were always going to be grumblings and frustration. There should have been an option for a new and classic interface once Kinect was made no longer mandatory. I would assume that they just did not have the time to get it in there and I suspect that we will see features from the old UI in time. Many of the complaints won't die until they do.

I don't think that should take away from your enjoyment of the device, but you must understand that the way they set it up is getting in the way of others' ability to do the same. The 360 was all about choices and how I wanted to use it. I don't think the xbone was made with the same design principal in mind. To me it seems more like it was designed how MS wants me to use it and the choices for me are fewer and further in between.

Im not being critical here. It just your whole argument could have been said about Facebooks switch to the timeline interface. People complained endlessly about it. Well everyone eventually switched over to timeline from wall, and that was that. Even the most ardent critics quit bitching about it eventually.

The UI seems designed to me to facilitate using whatever app you want in conjunction with your games. I will happily accept that it is not finished, and I hope Microsoft changes it up some more.

Where I have a problem is, there is a segment of the critics (like you for instance) who will not not grant that the interface has made a single change for the better. In almost 500 words you wrote right there, you had not one single nice thing to say about it. If you only have negative things to say about it, and nothing positive, your opinion is of little value. All of your criticisms seem to be along the lines of it changed, you liked it the way it was before. If that is the crux of your argument, then Microsoft literally can not change anything, and please you.

Which brings us back to the uselessness of your criticisms. Why should Microsoft listen to anything you say? You have proven you will not be happy with anything they do. By extension, why should any of us care either?

Let me preface this with, I can understand why many are having issues, don't like it or see it as a chore. For myself, even with the non-issues it's like common nature because of the multiple devices I own that utilize it.

That being said, for the people with issues concerning finding "friends" or jumping over to app lists. Have you ever tried pinning? Because you can literally pin damn near everything.

There is humor that can be derived from this passage when applied to your own posts in the Playstation subforum.

This is dopey and that wasn't the crux of my argument at all. No idea where you would get that it was. I really don't care if you care or don't listen to me. Don't like my posts ignore them. That is the great thing about choice and having options.

And the 500 words I posted were in a direct response to Cody's frustration with other users of the device and why they might not be seeing eye to eye. Nice things about the console really didn't have a place in the conversation. You read what you wanted to read. My post was about improving the experience for all users. I'm not advocating scraping all that they have done with Kinect and the UI or to get those that like it not to. I'm advocating options for those that have no interest in the device and want to use it without. How did you get that there is literally nothing MS can do to please me from that? Odd.

Like I said before....I equate it too console RPG gamers all of a sudden playing a PC RPG...... the PC RPG is better but confusing.Should they make things easier.... sure. I actually think that because of how they do there multiple OS that this will likely stay the same... with everything being an app...will the chat system get better....I would guess that this is MS highest priority. But the good outweighs the bad by a large margin in my book. Being able to see my friends and if they are online without leaving my game is huge for me.It outlays being able to check my achievements right now. I actually do not remember a time last gen where I needed o check an achievement right now. But I don not disagree that they still have work to do.... both systems do. But I believe it is a great start and will be a great OS.

There is humor that can be derived from this passage when applied to your own posts in the Playstation subforum.

I have said very little to nothing about the PS4. I have pretty much reserved my comments to criticism of Sony, and asking the PS4 sales be judged by the same metrics that the x1 sales gets judged by.

Im curious have you ready anything Ive said before you deleted it?

I'm not advocating scraping all that they have done with Kinect and the UI or to get those that like it not to. I'm advocating options for those that have no interest in the device and want to use it without. How did you get that there is literally nothing MS can do to please me from that? Odd.

Every feature of the UI is easily accessible without the use of Kinect...

I get to "there is nothing that Microsoft can do to please you" from your basic assumptions about the X1 that are often mistaken. For example, the entire UI is easily accessible from the controller, no Kinect is needed. Kinect functions are almost always reserved for functions that are not possible with the controller. Like the voice commands that have no possible controller analog in BF4.

App Snap for example, is easily accessible from the controller, in fact I prefer to use it that way.

Tell me what you think of the way I got the friends list in activity..... it isn't exactly like the 360 but you can see it in list form and you can see who is online while your playing. It also come up instant unlike when you click on friends on your home page.

Thank you for taking the time to explain it, it's definitely more of what I'm looking for, but it's quite a pain in the butt to do it for all of my friends and 99.9% of the Xbox One owners out there aren't going to be able to figure that out.

I think Microsoft still needs to just display the friends in a more practical way. They tried to fix something (the friends list) that was never broken and in turn made it worse than what it was.

Hey good one, dig out the pro xbox edge magazine covers from the 60s to prove the legitimacy of said rag from days gone by.

Nothing is a basic assumption, I own the console. The UI is designed to work best with Kinect and it does. Is anyone denying this? It is far more cumbersome and less counter-intuitive when using just the controller. Have you even tried it with just the controller? And since I bought the console for 500 bucks on launch day, they must have done something that pleased me.

Wat?

Im gonna need a see a photo of this post next to your x1 console to accept that you have an x1. What feature are you having trouble accessing with just the controller? LOL.

If you aren't using your Kinect to move around the UI, you are doing it wrong. I don't even have my XBOX ONE yet and even I can tell you this just by reading the reviews of the XBOX ONE.

We all joined the UNION, and we should make that mean something. It's human nature to argue, bicker and disagree, but we ddon't have

One man's meat is another man's poison. You might as well waste your time arguing with the wind. He doesn't like the UI and he doesn't like Kinect and he will continuously throw up walls of text making those same two points, and argue rudely with anyone who pays him any mind. A thoroughly unpleasant fellow, but perhaps he's in pain all the time, or has no friends.

Odd hypocrisy from post to post. Are you making it mean something by throwing out overgeneralized passive aggressive personal insults?

Who said anything about having trouble accessing anything in the post you are responding?
