Official Thread Fable IV

If it's a great universe, and they are pushing boundaries, then it shouldn't matter, imo. That's the biggest issue, imo. Like getting a tactical military shooter or horror game set in the Halo Universe. There is a ton of potential there. I'm not sure if that is considered a new IP though.

I mean, Is Forza Horizon a different IP than Forza Motorsport? Could be, considering how different the core gameplay and play-style is. What's in a name and setting?

Organic ip expansion needs to occur naturally like Mario Tennis and Donky Konga.

Um, what? There is no crew, there is no ride (except a horse), and there are no steam-powered robots unless I've forgotten them. There is a dog, but he doesn't talk; he just barks. Constantly.

Naw man. The first fable game especially had some sweet tagging (you could import jpgs downloaded from the darknet). The dog learned to talk because he was drift compatible with The Heroes Guild leader and their mind got fritzed in the quantum combobulator. My horse had the sweetest rims.

IMO its these core elements that PG needs to nail. Deep customisation.

And lots of Gay sex. And wife beating. And biggamy.

I'll be curious how long before MS makes the official announcement.

E3. For release Sept 2019.

Yes, it does. The same old thing all the time is s***. You keep defending the s***ty state of first party games, fella. It is severly lacking and has been for nigh on a decade now.

Not saying they shouldn’t do new things; I’m saying it shouldn’t be forced just because of some perception that they need new IPs. I think the biggest thing is MS should give their teams more freedom and see what comes of it. I don’t really need to defend anything. I know what I have enjoyed playing, I just think gamers make some stupid ass assertions sometimes. It’s like the TIC crowd asserting that Xbox needs more JRPGs and confronting Xbox gamers about it and demanding they buy more JRPGs. It misses the point and asks the wrong questions. They should be asking what Xbox gamers don’t like about those games and what the barriers are to their success on Xbox. The fact that it comes from Japan doesn’t make it a better or worse game. It’s the gameplay, the content, and the appeal.

All that said, you can say whatever the hell you want and my world turns the same. I just now from my experience: Halo has been great, Gears of War great, Ori great, and Killer Instinct awesome. Those have accounted for thousands of hours of gameplay.

You can't expect the Xbox userbase to sit up and get excited when games a decade old like Fable 2 and 3 were fully co-op and Fable IV not be....and Fable was originally supposed to have multiplayer anyway.

We don't even know what the Xbox userbase consists of anymore. I think most of the mature single player gamers went to the PS4 this gen. Last gen the 360 had a great mix of single player and multiplayer games. Not so much this gen.

I'm thrilled that Fable is back but this is just the first step in the process of delivering games that the masses want. Microsoft needs to keep bringing the games if they want to get back to where they were. Old and new IPs alike.

For release Sept 2019.

Doubt it. That would require them to create an open-world RPG from scratch in 2 years, with no experience in building these sorts of games. Even studios specializing in RPGs don't turn things around that fast.

I'd say, optimistically, 2020.

it all depends on how they will go about in E3 this year. If they make an announcement then it will be next year. If not they are not going to say anything till its close.

I want to see a heavy emphasis on manipulating objects and having physically based properties. Much tomfoolery can be achieved in maximizing emergent situations. Just look how much fun it is to mess around with NPCs in GTA. Let me throw tomatoes at everything and have it react in a believeable way (like people getting angry, or running away), or better yet, throw watermelons from rooftops! I want a world I can PLAY in, and Fable would be perfect for that.
I want to throw watermelons at chickens.

I'm still disappointed that you couldn't kick chickens in Tomb Raider. They were there!!!

Fable was so pioneering for chicken abuse.

Hopefully they can make the Fable that Molyneux always envisioned.

It’s an awesome sign that Microsoft is putting together a large team and helping Playground Games expand with this project. No doubt they intend to make Fable the pillar franchise it was envisioned to be...but never was.

My opinion may not be popular but I’m in favor of Playground building a franchise with no constraints from the first 3 games. I think they can throw in fan service last but everything from art style to gameplay should be theirs. To me, the Fable IP brings brand recognition and will make it easier to market than a completely new IP but I’m hoping Playground gets to treat it like a new IP.

Here’s where my opinion gets less popular. Fable 1 and 2 were solid but forgettable games. Fable’s early success was entirely based on the years of hype and over-selling the franchise. I thought after Fable 2 failed to deliver on the hype for a 2nd time, the franchise was on life support. It’s remembered more fondly today due to the sudden shortage of these types of games.

More unpopular ideas...Fable is the one franchise where it’s original ideas were ahead of it’s time and needed a GAAS model to try to deliver the initial vision profitably. Peter Monoloux thought the OG Xbox having a hard dive would allow him to create a persistent single player world. For Fable 2, he not only thought he’d finally deliver on that but players could jump in and out of your game world and impact it. Like suddenly you’d be competing with other people’s highly customized heroes.

Forgetting the pie in the sky cloud stuff, what Forza has done with Driveators, what Phantasy Star Online did, and what GTA does can all work with Fable.

I think the only thing Playground has to do to keep most Fable fans content is make it have swords and magic, have RPG elements, keep the colors bright, have a fantasy setting, have a single player campaign (in addition to the GAAS stuff) and be able to punt chickens. Outside of that, let them create their own art style and gameplay hooks. Make the ultimate fantasy sandbox. Have a mod tool set so gamers can create content and allow their friends to download it. Allow players to import their friends heroes into their game world. It’s time to not only make Monoloux’s original vision a reality...but take it to the next level.

They actually can and it woulne be the ultimate FU to Molynieux.

I agree with your ideas. What I want from Playground for Fable is to have:

  • A memorable story
  • Humor & Charm
  • Single player to last about 20-25 hrs on your first play through
  • Epic Boss fights
  • Better character customization
  • Co-op multiplayer for quests
  • Deeper combat and magic mechanics
  • Companion creature or sidekick
  • More creatures
  • Lose juvenile s*** like farting and belching
  • A bounty system for taking out other real players in the open world. Good & Evil.

The rest is up to them. I too basically want them to make Fable the GTA of fantasy.

There's no rush, they can take their time with it to get it right. No-one wants a fable 2.5 with better graphics.

They have experience in building these sorts of games. Open world games with the typical generic mission structure. Got to A to get mission. Go to B to pick up thing you need for mission. Then go to C via D to do mission. Return to A or B for reward and level up to do harder missions etc.

Imo Feb to end of 2017 is enough to get the combat system down and mission structure down.

The next 22 months are building the open world and adding expressions. And they can borrow assets from Australia and Japan for the open world from their sister studio.

Still think E3 for announcement either way.

I hope to god co-op is in it. That is so fun.

"Go to point A to get mission. Go to B to pick up thing, then go to point C to do mission."

That is a bizarrely simplistic view of what it takes to build a large, story-driven, open-world RPG.

Having 200 people working on it will help but the Eurogamer article said thats in the early days and they are still staffing so its a ways off

They could be staffing, but we don't know how deep in pre-production they are. Concept, story, and prototyping are the hardest part. At least with good management they are...

Could it take them more or less time then say what 343 was able to accomplish with halo 4 in the 360.

343 has many major vets from other studios as well as many Bungie employees when they formed. So could there be a chance we see this game forza horizon 5 comes out?

Maybe release it’s trailer after fh 5.

Fuk that. No need for the Asian influence, thanks. Keep it American influence or British. Not everyone like the Asian thing in RPGS's

But what if it is? All this rumor talk of a Fable reemergence could we be over looking another key title that was outsourced by MS, that just so happened to be of Asian influence, and by small well known developer tied to other major franchises not of their own.... Bioware’s Jade Empire.

I could see it now...

OMG am I turning into TDbloke ;) :p

Forza Horizon was incepted/ pitched at E3 2010 and released in October 2012.

2.5 years. This should take no longer.

Developers work too many hours as it is. Give them a decade, and let them chillax a bit while doing it.

If you're gonna be a developer, you'd want to work for Squeenix. Get a decade to remake the same games twice (FFXIV and FFXV) and getting to fly around the world to take photos of fossilized crap.

I bet their employees get to steal some great swag too.

You want it done fast or do you want it done right?

What was wrong with Forza Horizon? I'd much rather have Fables IV and V with mid-high 80 metas between now and 2021 than just Fable IV with a 90 meta.

Racing game.

RPG.

Open world where you play as a car = 2 years dev time

Open world where you play as a humanoid = 5 years dev time

Why 3 more years? I'd think the hard bit would be the open world.

I would like an RPG based ONLY on Forza Horizon assets. Sure, it wouldn't make any sense attacking someone with the door from a Porsche 911 (costs extra), but they could knock it out in six months and it would be funny as hell.

This made me think of this

Man Fighters Megamix was so stinking awesome! I would love a remake of that.
