Turn 10 Studios aims to revive the ethos of its classic Forza Motorsport game experiences and incorporate them into the philosophy of its next installment into the track-focused racing franchise. This idea, infused into the “built, not bought” concept that is a core viewpoint of the next title, was discussed on the latest edition of the Forza Monthlybroadcast show by Chris Esaki, a Creative Director on the Forza franchise alongside Community Manager Brian Ekberg.

FORZA RACE REGULATIONS

Esaki began by discussing the team’s continued investment into its Forza Race Regulationsadjudication system. There’s still a lot of learnings from the feature the team would like to gather, so therefore to increase its coverage, the developer will be rolling out Forza Race Regulations into its A Class and S Class Hoppers in Forza Motorsport 7 sometime at the beginning of September.

This will allow Turn 10 to get additional data, insight and feedback to assist with future development of the regulations system. Esaki mentioned that A Class and S Class Hoppers are the two most popular Multiplayer Hoppers outside of the Forza Race Regulations Betafor circuit racing. Whilst there’s still many people playing Open Meetups, the Leagues system doesn’t have a huge population compared to the aforementioned Hoppers.

Esaki also noted that Forza Race Regulations uses an “automation style” that isn’t ready to be deployed across the entire game, which means enabling the adjudication system in only a few Hoppers is a much safer approach for the team to take. Whilst this doesn’t mean any further development on Forza Motorsport 7, which concluded with the release of the August 2019 Update, it does allow Turn 10 to deploy a super small change into the game that will help the team on future upgrades to the Forza Race Regulations infrastructure.

TURN 10 STUDIO FOCUS – FORZA AUDIO DIRECTION

With attention shifting towards the next installmentinto the Forza Motorsport series, Esaki discussed the overall focus of the studio and revealed that most development internally is on tools, framework and pipeline. Those working on such aspects of the game and its ForzaTech engine aren’t necessarily feature developers, they aren’t working on Forza Race Regulations, nor Driver Gear, so they don’t get discussed a lot since they aren’t forward-facing features, but rather the underpinnings of the game. The work done across tools, framework and pipeline is what allows Turn 10 to build cars, tracks and “ship to themselves,” a term used internally that sees the team iterate much faster. Esaki hopes to show off more of their work in the future.

Sound is one area that’s receiving significant overhauls in the next Forza Motorsport game. Led by Audio Director Chase Combs, his team are building a larger system around customization and even sound customization that is directly about how you put together your car. They noticed EA and Ghost Games launch their new NFS Heat Studio app for its upcoming open-world street racer, delivering new customization options along with exhaust sound tuning. Esaki admitted that it’s “really, really cool – our audio team is really excited about that.”

Turn 10 is also trying to figure out a system that programmatically generates different sounds, tones and resonates, based on how you put the car together – therefore shaping the audio of the vehicle centered around your build. Obviously, Forza isn’t a car building simulation, but the audio team is looking at ways it can bring this personalization to life when you are upgrading and building your car. “It’s a pretty cool system, we’ve seen some demos of it already,” Esaki said. “It’s pretty exciting.”

Love how they are trying to make out it is their idea to put FRR in to A and S class. They were never going to do this until the community got toxic over them have us beta test the feature and then gave us all a big F U and didn't implement it in multiplayer hoppers.

I also guess they also forgot that they told us they couldn't add it across the board for complicated technical reasons.

Do a new PGR instead. Give Forza another couple years rest

That’s why I still believe MS should buy sumo studios, they have worked with the with Forza tech with horizon 2 for the 360, having had worked on many other racing and open world games they’d be the perfect candidate to work on a third series of Forza with a PGR subtitle or even bring back rallysport

Hell I'll take a remake of 2 or 4 first just to reintroduce the series

I honestly don't remember PGR that well. What are people looking for that isn't filled by either Motorsport or Horizon?

I'm hoping we see a Horizon set in a more dense urban setting on next gen hardware.

Something that isn't Motorsport or Horizon. PGR was very much its own thing and Horizon isn't a replacement for it.

Some of the best racers last gen just got abandoned, PGR, Burnout and Grid. These racers need to return...especially Burnout, a track based Burnout.

They can't really afford to be silent. They have pissed off and drove away alot of their core audience this gen. Even their big content creators are playing other things. That is not good.

Plus, what does grass roots even mean for this game? Cause the game hasn't really moved on over the years, and is basically the same as it was at the start.

As others have stated, I'd rather see a new PGR game than FM (not into hardcore racing games, sorry). PGR was track focused with more "arcadey" handling (i.e. more like Horizon) and I really loved the kudos system...Horizon does something similar but not the same....when you beat those Kudos tracks in PGR, you really felt like you accomplished something. Fact is, I'm burned out on Horizon. FH2 was great, 3 was better, and I think 4 is even better but I was burned out after putting around 80 hours into FH2, 40 into 3 and I've only played about 10 hours of 4. Every other year cadence is even too much IMO....would be nice to mix in a PGR or even RallySport every 3rd year or something.

What was the big issue with Forza 7? I think it's the only mainline game I've missed. For Horizon I've only played 2 and now 4, so it's remained fresh for me.

It is my favorite Forza Motorsport this gen. However, things like loot boxes, homolagation, lack of online penalties in racing, and hoppers dampened it for many. MS removed loot boxes, and started adding online penalties late in the games lifecycle. Too little too late for some. They lost focus on what makes Motorsport a Motorsport game. They went with quantity over quality for car count. No new tracks.

Personally I like it and I finished it (first time I ever finished a Forza campaign).

I see. I think the main reason I skipped it is that I just wasn't playing Xbox much at the time. If it had been on PC as well I may have given it a shot. I'm surprised it's not on Game Pass at this point though? I'd at least try it out if it was I think. As for online, the only time I bothered with these games online was when we did a weekly meetup with TXB/Union members back during F6 I think.

I think I was part of those races back then on occasion. If you don't care about online, then the biggest gripes you won't see. The biggest offline gripes were lootboxes, which have been removed. Taking that into consideration, I think it's a great game and a worthy pick up. Though it would be cool if it was on Game Pass for those who don't want to buy it or don't have time to invest a bazillion hours into it.

Basically stagnation. I mean the game graphically was amazing and really raised the bar, especially on X1X, but it doesn't do much to improve on the past.

GT did things like adding online racing with rankings and such. Forza 7 isn't a bad game, but it just felt like the same old same old.

Forza is also sort of in a weird place in the market. It is more sim like, but it isn't up there with the hard core sims. It doesn't have the realism of a Project Cars 2 or Assetto Corsa, but it is much more than an arcade game obviously. For the more casual car/race fan, Horizon is probably fine.

Alot is the answer.

The online is a mess. Lobbies menus are laggy. Racing is more akin to destruction derby.
Campaign is boring as f*** and just presented differently.
Added so many stupiid, inapropriate vehicles.
Lacking new tracks.
Post launch content is trash.
Physics are a bit meh.

Basically it has been a two year beta.

I imagine Forza has to go full sim at this point, but will they? They've always been in this weird "almost a sim but not quite" territory. Horizon is there for the casual fan who just wants to collect cars and race around more casually.
