Gamespot: Xbox One's Sunset Overdrive Runs In 900p at 30fps

Insomniac Games' upcoming Xbox One exclusive open-world game, Sunset Overdrive, will output in 900p at 30fps, studio president Ted Price confirmed Thursday. Speaking at EGX in London, Price outlined why he thinks that was the right move for the game.

"This is a game with a lot on the screen and we made the choice to be at 900 because we wanted to push the level of detail, action, the size of the city, and the views you can experience as move around," he told IGN. "What's great about Sunset Overdrive is if you can see it, you can go there."

Price added that Insomniac benefited from the Xbox One June SDK update, which gave the studio a "slight boost in CPU power" that it could take advantage of.

Also in the interview, Price confirmed that Sunset Overdrive is the "biggest game" Insomniac has ever made. It's not only just a big world, however, but it's also full of stuff to do. So much so that you may need to play it through a few times to find everything it has to offer. "You can continue playing after the end of the game and we don't imagine people will unlock everything the first time through," Price said.

Some of Insomniac's past games include Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus.

Finally, though Sunset Overdrive is not even out yet, Price said he's hopeful there could be more entries in the series released down the road. "Absolutely we want this to be a new franchise," he said.

Sunset Overdrive launches October 28 exclusively on Xbox One, though a PC version has not been ruled out. The game is published by Microsoft, and a special-edition $400 Xbox One bundle that includes the game and a white system will be available. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Sounds good, 900p is a real sweet spot for having a great looking game and pushing the graphics even more without sacrificing performance.
 
Honestly, I'm not bothered by these resolution woes. I must be the only person here that doesn't have two HD TV's side by side in their lounge, to compare the difference...

I'm willing to sacrifice a few pixels for a stable frame rate, but more than anything, I want originality and creativity to return to my screen!
 
This has a possibility to become a problem in a linear, small games like Ryse was a year ago. Frankly, with a game the size of SO, it's pretty hard to care...
 
You can measure resolution and frames per second. You can't measure fun. :)

Sure you can. Tell a bunch of ppl to rate on a fun scale of 0-10 how fun the game is and do a weighted average.

Resolution/FPS is something the hardware and developers determine. Fun factor is up to you and has nothing to do with specs. I'd rather play Halo at 480p/30fps than Killzone at 1080p/60fps on a 4k TV. Point was, i don't think any Xbox gamer is going to give a sh!t that the game isn't running at 1080p/60fps. It's an Xbox exclusive, not on PS4.

Yeah i am ok with this. I just hope the framerate will stay at 30 most of the time. I know it's silly for DF to analyze an E3 demo or whatever they did, but the fps wasn't constantly 30fps at all there, but we will see. I am not even sure about this game yet. I hope they bring a demo.

So you're saying all you worry about is reviews, DF comparisons, sales, etc? You can't make up your mind for yourself whether a game is fun or worthy of a purchase? Spoken like a true PS fan. If Sony tells you it's the pinnacle you believe the hype, no questions asked.

Dude, what are you even talking about? I'm not here to start a console war or anything. Just pointed out that you can in fact measure the fun factor. That's it. Calm the f*** down.

Fun factor is subjective. Specs are not. It's nothing personal. You were wrong. That's all.

I'm not wrong. Yes, fun is subjective but you can indeed measure it. How?

Tell 20 people to rate a game based on how fun it is from a scale of 0-10. Then get the weighted average to get the overall "fun factor" from this sample size. Simple statistics, dude.

So if fun is measurable why do people hate on Call of Duty but it's still the best selling game? Why do some people prefer RPGs over FPS? See what i'm getting at here yet? There's no "statistic" that's going to determine whether you have fun with a game or not. Resolution and FPS can't be argued. Boy, Sony really has brain washed you with all this 1080p/60fps talk huh? This kind of statistics have been used in many fields so I'm not sure why you believe it can't be applied to gaming here. You know the compare other games that DF does really hurt the people who made the games because it can hurt the sales.

Now this game will do great because even if its only 900p if it have the higjtest point of fun factor then nothing else matters.
 
The PS4 version will probably be 1080p tho...Oh Wait!:D
... It will be an "improved" version, but with no more than 5 enemies on screen at a time, and will have an "advanced" version of Sunset City, with extra-realistic smog. :D Yeah, I went there.
 
Also, I'm pretty sure that this game was already confirmed to be 900/30fps a while back.

Fun factor is really just in the eye of the beholder. It's a "in your opinion" kind of deal. You can measure popularity, you can measure sales, you can measure ratings from bribed reviewers, but you cannot measure fun.

The game will be fun regardless. 900p is a good resolution. Definitely a ton better than the old 720p option.

Yes, of course it is very subjective. But as I said, you can place this fun factor onto a numerical scale and gain some sort of weighted average significance in how "fun" the game is. Then based on the general consensus we can determine whether a game is generally considered "fun". If you're enjoying the game and feeling generally happy, then that most likely means you're having "fun".

You can do that, but what you are describing is strictly measuring popularity and general consensus, not fun per say. I don't think that stuff should matter.

It doesn't matter that much but how much fun the game is certainly factors into the numerical rating the reviewers give the game, correct?

Anyways, I was just correcting TD that "fun" can be measured if you want.
