Official Thread Gears 4 **NO SPOILERS**

Man I suck at Gears. Played with some buddies and my k/d was anywhere from 0-7 to 6-4.

I got to learn how to move and do shotgunning from point to point.

Trying to kill people from medium/long distance with a Lancer or Hammerburst is extremely tough. When I dabbled with Gears 1 MP, I used a Lancer and got kills. But seems a lot tougher now.

Gears has always been shotgun battles. You might get the odd kill with a rifle but if you can't use a shotty you'll be at a serious disadvantage.

Actually you can do quite well with a rifle, especially the Hammerburst, but you need to roll with a squad and play smart. Part of it is knowing the map and positioning, but to an extent, shotguns will always be there.

Yeah. Hammerburst always seemed the most viable medium distance rifle. I've players wreck with it in execution.

Ok.

Well Act 3 was a riot. For starters that baby took me 4 hours on hardcore, it's easily twice as long as Act 1 (which felt a chapter short because part of its the prologue) and 3 times as long as Act 2. Jeez, i'm 3/5ths into the game and it's 8 hours 30 minutes. I think if any one had concerns about the length they should play hardcore. It's challenging, but not frustrating and you can't just waltz through it.

It also had a pretty cool set piece near the end...as well as an (almost) heart breaking ending. Thankfully .....

I hate Snatchers, they are a more offensive version of the Pouncer and while I like the design and game play fundamentals, they just feel too tough (i know they are meant to be bosses) they need to be as tough as Reavers and simply have more of them.

Really great story exposition now, it really does feel like one long ass night for these guys. It feels much better paced and thought out than any of its predecessors. Less like a tech demo with a kill the monsters mission and more a world on the brink of a windflare.

OFFSET MAPPING. Oh boy does this have some great cobblestones and detail, it's so refreshing to see a pile of garbage (seemingly) built out of separate geometry, not just a rubble shape texture.

I think this is the issue with Act 1, it feels flat by comparison. Edges of buildings look too straight when a little uneven brick work would look more real.

I'm not done yet, but I really have to heap praise so far for the Coalition, I think they made a better Campaign then either Epic and People Can Fly in terms of story and pacing (in short, the series seems a little more grown up and less dudebro) so commendations are in order to MS for putting together a very talented first party studio to take steward of an old franchise that has so much more to tell.

Argh. Not sure how I feel about Gears 4. 1st through 3rd act weren't exactly my favorites. Not bad. Graphics were mezzo-mezzo (so-so) Feels like Gears for sure, just, I don't know.. Gonna finish playing it and see how things go. 4th act was pretty cool. Still not gripping me in the way I thought it would. Feel super honored to own all three releases for Xbox thusfar however..

Act 3 chapter 3 on insane is kicking my ass. I spent most of my afternoon trying to pass it. Oh, and juvies are damn annoying.

I agree with you there. My hardcore playthrough was 10 hours. I thought the campaign was the perfect length.

Also, the wind flare moments during the story really helped break it up and create some great moments. It got intense.

Finally, I really do think The Coalition did a great job. Rod Ferguson did the franchise proud. Outstanding job.

Man, f*** trying to play Horde with randoms. Engineers who don't do what engineers are supposed to do. Scouts that leave half the Power out on the map even after they yell at you to not pick it up. Idiots that pick up dog tags and don't bother to turn them in to respawn you. People quitting out after a few waves. And SUPER bossy PC players.

But when I do get a team that has their s*** together it's fun as hell!

i know. I tell these people don't touch the money till wave 10 to fight the boss. I tell them also the scout should get the money because they bring 2x the amount.

I'll dabble with some more MP this week..... although it'll be tough as I'll be glued watching the Jays try to win at home.

But yeah, I'll try using Hammerburst more. My campy gameplay isn't suited for Gears, but I'll try to mix it up with a mix of Hammerburst and shotgunning.

You can't camp in Gears. It's just not an option.

I've only had one decent horde with randoms out of maybe three I've tried. First two people just randomly left in the first 5 waves or so. The most recent we got to around 25 or so on normal. Don't think anyone was talking (I couldn't talk or hear because the Win10 Xbox app is junk). I think we did pretty good considering. Most of the time we only had four people.

Completed all 50 rounds on Normal in Horde now too. My Scout is level 5. 3 perks, one is maxed out, second is almost maxed. Still having a ton of fun, but Battlefield is probably going to pull me away a bit.

I genuinely love this game, LOVE it. But F Coalition and MS for the worst microtransactions I've seen.
Halo had it perfectly. But this ? F it. That esports pack was the worst. A week in and they announce a 100 dollar ''micro''transaction ? Again F them.

I wouldn't mind if it was just cosmetics. It is for Versus. But they made horde play to win with cards you need to get to improve your player especially for insane run. Really scummy way to do it imo. Especially after paying 100 bucks for the ultimate edition.

Act IV- Chapter 1 - What a ride, i'm so glad the series has beefed up the set pieces, there's me thinking it'd be another Horde Defense on a slow elevator and they throw that at me. So good. I don't like the sound of that cough though. Chekhovs Gun?

Finished it the other day. Awesome campaign overall. Really picked up midway through. Definitely the best Gears campaign yet. 85 meta what a joke. Now to just beat it on Insane, i can already tell that's going to be fun. But i'm gonna beat it myself the easy way by putting the second controller on casual in split screen.

Haven't touched Horde yet. Playing mostly multiplayer right now. Microsoft and their rep system, lol. Played Gears: UE for months, never got a negative feedback. Playing Gears 4 for a few days, already got 6 of them. 4 unsporting, 1 cheating, 1 voice? I haven't even plugged my headset in yet. Good to know the 360 days are back. Serious business. Hold that L brah.

well tbf the horde packs are pretty easy to get with just playing the game

Oh yeah really easy. It took me nearly 3 hours in Horde (which is the only thing I play) to earn 400 credits enough for the worst pack which is filled with green cards (the worst). Btw I didn't have a credit bounty or couldn't level up every 5 levels because of my higher level. So yeah I wouldn't call it ''pretty easy''.

Sure if you're a newbie at level 1-40 it's much better as you level up 2-5 levels after every game but once you hit 91 and out of bounty the grind is going to be very long.

That seems low to me. If I make it to round 30 or 40 playing Horde (about half an hour game time probably) I usually come out with about 800/900 coins or enough to buy me two horde booster packs.

When did 85 meta become a joke?

Did you really think a return of the franchise on a next-gen console that holds tightly on to the past was going to match it in reviews? Was never happening.

When did 85 meta become a joke?

When every other so called next gen game that also holds tightly to the past scored in the 90's. Neil Druckmann literally added a box that you push around and climb on in Uncharted 4. That's it. Oh and Drake has a rope now. 93/100. Would have been a 94 if someone at the Washington Post didn't write a troll review that brought it down a point. Bloodborne 92/100 even though it's just Dark Souls with a new coat of paint.

The scoring this gen has been biased and that's coming from a PlayStation fan at heart. There's no other way to put it. If Gears of War gets points subtracted for being Gears then Uncharted should have points subtracted for being Uncharted. There's no way a game the caliber of Gears of War 4 is an 85. Not here, and not in another universe. Single player, co-op, Horde, the best multiplayer for a console game. No way. The Coalition adds dynamic weather effects, which added to the gameplay like we haven't seen in Gears yet. Neil Druckmann adds a f***ing box to UC4 and it's GOTY. Get out of here.

Obviously, you know all of this menace. You've just defected as a Gears fan and are probably happy that Gears 4 didn't score as well as previous games. In your mind it deserves it and that's fine. But if you're going to call out games for not reinventing the wheel then keep it consistent. That's all.
