Official Thread Gears 4 **NO SPOILERS**

You realize there are solutions to both your problems and not the fault of the game.

I do and I know what you mean. The game is still great it's the people why play that annoy me so much.

Ok. So I finished the campaign on Thursday night.

Sublime. Easily my favourite Gears game, but i'd class it as the 2nd best Gears game overall.

Pros:

  • Best graphics ever. I played a shey of Battlefields 1's campaign and while very good for a 60fps title, Gears 4 dials up the detail in it's campaign. It's shockingly good to a point makes you wonder why all other games do not.
  • On Hardcore my playtime came out at 12 hours 30 minutes exactly, and i'm sure that doesn't include the game play where i died, so it's tied with Gears 3 as longest game in the series.
  • Controls are the most polished in the series, given this is Coalitions first game proper, thats heavy praise indeed to preserve Gears gameplay and just make it that much more precise
  • Best story telling, my favorite Gears campaign is 2 because I feel it has the best set pieces (the Derricks sequence) and this topped it with a vehicle set piece and escape set piece. Rod has said he wanted the series to return to the horror aspect (which I don't feel is what the series is about, there's a couple of sequences in Gears 1 that played on the unseen enemies, but at the end of the day I feel Gears is an action game) and that worried me, thankfully this game has good balance in that it has great action, slow moments for characters to blossom and the big threats have slow drawn out reveals.
  • I like that the game went in a different direction with the story than expected.
  • The new characters of JD, Kait and Oscar are well defined.
  • As a technical measure, this is a great start for UE4, with UE3 Gears 1 had a fair bit of tearing, small brown levels, texture pop in and control issues. This game has none of that it's colourful when it needs to be, I noticed no tearing, no texture pop and stunning levels of detail. I would class it as huge leap over Gears Ultimate. It really is that good.
Cons
  • It's a 25% step back in modes and content over Gears 3. Gears 3 has a massive sandbox of enemies and weapons and modes. I'm sure by the time we get to Gears 6, this new saga will have just as much, but no-one likes losing modes.
Ideally we need overrun, beast mode and arcade mode back.
  • No 4 player co-op ...no 3 player co-op? Why? sure there's a 3 -4 hour section where there's only 3 characters are in the game, but that could have been remedied with a minor story adjustment.
  • The ending is quite abrupt....I will get into this more in the spoiler topic.
  • NEGATIVE SPACE. I know Rod says they can fill in the gaps later, but they could have made a few more hints. Most of the questions introduced in this one are answered or alluded to, but there's still question from between 3-4 they could have made non-committal embellishments on (again spoiler topic) for lore fans like myself
IMO Best Gears Campaign yet. 2nd best Gears Game after 3.

Made it through to Act V, closer to the end of this unforgivingly, brutal ride.

Well, I think I'm finished with the game. Horde is filled with quitters or people who don't know the classes.

eVo7: Nah, you just suck at life! Nothing wrong with the game! Get rekt kid!

Yeah, if you want to get deep into Horde you almost have to organize a run. Doing anything with randoms on this game is like pulling teeth. I only played a few hours of Horde this weekend and people were quitting out left and right. Sometimes the game doesn't even start because an idiot won't let go of the box to start the game.

Beat the campaign and its pretty good but boy is that ending unsatisfying.
I am on Act 1, Chapter 2 I believe
Been shooting robots and rolling balls non stop on this huge round elevator and it is getting OLD...I hope it picks up soon
and I hope it gets better.

It does. That is the low point for sure.

Went 14-2 in Execution last night and we still lost 2 rounds. Woulda been a sweep if my team was decent. But i ain't complaining. Or am I? :D

I really enjoyed the campaign. My spoiler-free review:

Try to remember what it was like playing Gears of War for the very first time. You played as a He-Man-inspired soldier with a colored past on an earth-like planet ravaged by monsters. The campaign was an homage to both the action and horror genres, filled with gore, bullets, and chainsaws, and it was glorious.

It has been nearly 10 years since the first Gears title was released, and throughout the five Gears titles in the franchise, things haven't been toned down. Instead, the characters, the setting, and the lore have been refined to near perfection. With the latest title, Gears of War 4, developers at The Coalition have managed to begin a new chapter in the series while carrying over some of the crucial hallmarks of the previous Gears games.

The story in Gears 4 isn't very complex, and largely predictable, but it is above all, entertaining. You play as Marcus Fenix's adult son, J.D., who finds himself in the advent of a new threat to the human race. With friends at his side, he takes on the Swarm with classic and new Gears weapons. There are great cameos and some lovely little easter eggs throughout the game, so be sure to take your time through the short campaign.

One of my favorite moments in any game was the Riftworm level in Gears 2. It was glorious and spectacular in its unique presentation of gore and action. Although less gruesome, there are a couple of highly memorable and exciting levels that are equally as jaw-dropping. They are so superbly executed that I want to replay those levels again in co-op with different friends.

The dialogue between the characters is sharp and for the most part, doesn't take itself too seriously. The writers clearly had fun developing the characters for Gears 4, and knew that they had to make the new characters likable for diehard Gears fans. Believe me, there's a lot to like about the characters. They're passionate and campy - they'll say things that you can imagine yourself saying in their boots ("I think some of it got in my mouth!" is one of my favorite lines).

Gears of War 4's wonderful campaign is a high-flying roller coaster ride that is not only a worthy successor, but an outstanding start to a new trilogy of heroes. It's non-convoluted story leaves you completely satisfied, yet aching for more.

They're adding checkout and drydock on November 1.

Thanks for information but this is starting to tick me off. Recycling these maps is not why I bought the season pass. I want new ones.

But I'm part of the problem buying it.

You know with recycled maps and remasters, how much of this gen is going to be made up of the last one?

I want Blood Drive and Pavilion. Where's that Gears 2 love.

Not only are they removing 2 maps but they are removing one of my fav current gears maps, Relic, from the game.
Gears 4 has so many bland maps and they picked one of the better maps to remove.

I don't have the game, but I find stuff like this super cute!

Can you earn ingame money instead of spending real $? I like that too.

yeah you can get it through ingame currency, its very nicely priced too. opened tons without spending a penny of real money. wish i could get that gnasher skin in the thumbnail. got some nice looking boom and retro skins though

Got Festive JD in my first pack. I just want Festive Kait, Festive Swarm, and the gingerbread skins. Cool update.

i was playing the cross-play versus playlist... and there was a cheater that was getting 100% hits with boltok.. headshot after headshot

this is why i hope PC v Consoles never happen in versus environment. PC gamers are so pathetic, if you can cheat they will

Yes, you can practically buy anything using ingame money. The only exception is the DLC which you only need to purchase if you want to host private matches with these maps.

I like that!

That way the community doesn't end up entirely split up.

Is the player count still high?
