Getting too old for this sh!t?

A willingness to start at the bottom and experience. Right after college I got a job doing benchwork for a local firm. In addition to the benchwork I would maintenance computer labs in low income metropolitan housing.

After that I got a A+ certification and got a job at a local company doing basic help desk. Over the next four years I became the server/domain admin, system admin, network admin and implemented a entire Vsphere cluster. However, I was still getting paid a help desk wage.

However, that stuff padded my resume. I then took a couple steps back responsibility wise taking my current position but got a pretty hefty raise. Now Im in a position to further pad my resume and move up the ladder at a large university.

Okay sounds about right. I think I'm just in a bizarro world economy living in northern Michigan.

Maybe if I can get experience somehow on the side, I'll trying aiming for a bigger city like Green Bay, WI for work.

Yeah, northern Michigan, as beautiful as it is, isnt a IT stronghold. I imagine there has to be something up there though.

And depending on how good you are, dont be afraid to just start your own firm. Put a add out for computer repair. You'd be surprised how many people will contact you.

One thing I (29) have noticed is that I spend way way more time reading about games than actually playing games.

I mean it must be 4:1 (reading : gaming) which is a little bizarre. When I come home I see my Xbox gathering dust and keep asking myself - so that's what you're arguing/reading about? :D

I do the same thing. I read and watch video of games way more than playing them.

43 here and yep when i am working i am 3 hours drive away so i can only get home and game at the weekends, unless i can play me some diablo 3 etc on my laptop or iPad games :)
but the beauty of my profession is that sometimes i can have 2/3 months off work so then its GAME ON :D
i still love gaming as much as ever but as i work away from home a lot, i don't get to play as often as i'd like but the interest is still there!!

really excited for destiny and AC : Unity :D

I find myself lately playing my PC games at work on my Nvidia Shield Tablet via Gamestream as I said earlier I don't have much time at home for it and if there isn't anything critical going on, I basically sit around the whole day so I started bringing my Shield Tablet to work.

31 here, married and one daughter + one kitten ( I use to call him son sometimes :)).
Each day gets time to play between 1 - 5+ hours (unless I`m watching a movie or a tvshow.

Thank God I'm not alone.

I recently bought some BF4 unlocks in the winter sale, because I just don't have time to unlock them all naturally anymore (still only play with close friends online) like I sued to back in BF2 on PC or even Bad Company on PS3. Doesn't make me a better player - but it allows me to have fun with different guns and experiment. etc

Judge me all you want "l33t gamers/neckbeards", but I look at this way, I'm blessed enough to HAVE to have to divvy up my time according to different things. :)

I still love gaming, just can't get into all the ins and outs of every mechanic for a game. Why a game like the Souls series doesn't gel with me (it's the difficulty attributed to the time needed to spend on it to be good/worthwhile). Probably something I would've loved back in high school or uni. But not now.

It also gets annoying though when devs pad hours into their games because of all the whiners that want 25+ hour games for pretty much every f***ing game. It shows in the levels - not only do I not have time to be finishing this game, you have also made some of the levels s***ty by being repetitive/boring/unnecessary just so you can sell to whiners that it's X amount of hours.

Why I don't judge those who buy editors/cheats etc (providing it's not used online/competitively) - play your way, you bought the game, people shouldn't judge how you spend your time. :)

Respect for the thread :).

I am just in my twenties, but between being pretty self-dependent, going to school, having a girlfriend, working out, and going out with friends, I don't game as much as I would like. I buy too much, honestly. I haven't even completed Watch Dogs yet. I think once I settle down in life (marriage, finished degree, and job), I'll be less likely to spend my money. Stress has already taken a toll on me! I am getting less sleep and losing hair. I give you folks some serious credit!

I have 3 kids now and the two oldest are 8 and 7 so I have no time and my interest in gaming altogether wanes until the leaves fall off the trees . Even then Ill play maybe one or 2 game per year. I just don't get that much enjoyment out of it. My kids play Minecraft whenever they get a chance to.
I do sometimes play Super Mario with them, however, which is fun.
I never really was hardcore gamer. I did have a brief hardcore fix back in the early 2000s. That is why I joined TXB.

I hate "leveling" systems in games because of this. A new player who gets the game late shouldn't be getting ganked by people who are level 500 or something.

I wish most game Unlocks had nothing to do with weapons. For example, in Max Payne Multiplayer you could unlock different Deathmatch characters.

As for weapons, Max Payne wasn't unreasonably balanced. It didn't take to many levels to get the M500 Shotgun which is devastating at close range.

Yes, I liked Halo's armor unlocks. Gives you something to work for which has no impact on balance.

Some games do weapons ok, like COD. There's usually a low level weapon that works for everyone early on.

Or in big games maybe reward different travel abilities like flying or just cooler looking cars.

For this reason, I was a big fan of Star Wars: Battlefront. Everyone got the same character classes and gear regardless of being a noobie or veteran. It's not like only high level people got to use the Imperial Walkers on Hoth. A brand new player could use them.

Aw man. The feels in this thread.

Two years ago when I turned 27 and my girlfriend and I got an apartment, my days were spent like this: wake up, go to work for 8 hours, come home, play games for four hours straight, eat dinner, play more games for three hours, go to bed, and repeat. On weekends? I'd go to my friend's house, smoke weed, come home late at night, and play games for hours high as a mother f***er. But much fun as I had, I didn't accomplish anything productive.

I had very little responsibility back then. My biggest one was my management job at a hotel. But other than that that, my life was totally relaxed. I didn't do s*** with my life except work. I lived with my damn parents! I didn't have rent or utilities pay. Just cell phone and car note and things like that. All I had to do was go to work and do the occasional chore. The free time and money I had gave me the freedom to live my days around video games.

Now? I have a girlfriend I try to keep happy, my own apartment to pay for and maintain, and she and I are putting a child through school. Things are way different now. I lost my job at the hotel, but that still doesn't mean I have more time to play. My free time now is looking for another job. I still have a fraction of the time before to play games.

I often ask myself if I'd rather go back to my old life with my parents. I mean why not? I had all the time in the world to enjoy my favorite hobby with little to no distraction. However, the answer is no. While I do miss those days devoid of much personal and social obligation just to get high and binge on games all damn day, I'm happier. I share a life with a wonderful woman and a great boy. I finally feel accomplished.

But have all these responsibilities and getting older caused me to lose interest in gaming? Put it this way, because I'm in between jobs right now and can't afford to buy any new games, I'm actually going through my old games and beating them all over again.

Getting older just sucks.
28 now and I'm going to just go insane once I start seeing gray hairs on my balls.

In fact I might just commit myself to a hospital.

Yeah, I hear ya. House, wife, kid, job, family that likes to do a lot of (sometimes not so exciting) events. Lately, since the arrival of the new generation of consoles (have not bought one yet) I have pretty much stopped buying games altogether. The exception is Diablo III Ultimate evil edition for 360.

I find even when I have the time now (since having kids) I'm often too tired to even game. Does that even make fcking sense? Writing it sounds r******d, but I assure you it happens lol.

I game as much as I can, but that doesn't usually end up being all that much.

I'm often working on my own projects outside of work and I find myself feeling guilty if I put too much time into something else besides them.

I'll always make time for games I really want to play though. It just takes me a lot longer to get through them than it used to.

I considered the pros/cons of lapsing into a coma for about 30 seconds yesterday. I can't help but think about 3 years in an unconscious dream state could do wonders for morale.

I rather play a video game as its interactive
then watch a movie

and as for old.. since I am probably the oldest on here
yes I now have more time
but when I was in my 30's well gaming was just starting
I spent my time with my job, showing horses, dressage
showing dogs, gardening, painting [oils] school etc

now I have all the time in the world and enjoy my hobby
remember.. I was born 1953

Gaming is a very big distraction at times and I am looking to sooner or later get out of it.

Am I alone or does anyone else planning on eventually getting out?

No. It's not a big distraction. I play when I really want to nothing more, I have plenty of other hobbies that come before games not to mention a wife and a 4 month old baby.

Not really. Gaming is something I do when all other priorities are taken care of. When I get a couple free hours in the evening, if there is nothing else going on, I sit down and get some game time in.

Gaming never distracts me from something I should be doing otherwise.

I plan on eventually getting more into it honestly. One day in my life I will have more free time. In order to not get bored I'll play more videogames.

This exactly. I hope I never lose interest.
